I'm not Scottish and I don't live in Scotland, but this statement by Liz Truss has made me seethe with rage. AIBU?

I know Nicola Sturgeon is not universally popular in Scotland but, by all measures, the SNP have a sizeable majority in Scotland and like it or not, she is the elected leader of the country, chosen by its population.

How can someone who is vying to be PM of the UK make such a comment as this without alienating, by definition, a majority of Scots? It's a terrible footing to start out on.

It just shows the low regard that she / the Tories have for the "other" nations of the UK outside of England / Westminster. If ever there was a great advert for independence for Scotland (or Wales, or reunification of Ireland), surely this is it?

Truss isn't educationally sub normal. She's socially awkward, which is another thing we'll accept in male leaders, but not in women.

The main problem with her IMO is that she's prepared to say anything she thinks will make her popular.

QuizzlyBear · 02/08/2022 11:22

Not Scottish, no skin in the game, but I was horrified to see this. Sturgeon is the democratically elected leader of Scotland and Truss is being unbelievably disrespectful and offensive. She's the democratically elected leader of nowhere.

At least Truss is so fecking awful that in 2 years time, the Tories will finally be out. (Hoping that Labour get their act together in the meantime and pop Rayner in charge!)

WouldBeGood · 02/08/2022 11:23

I’m Scottish and this is the only thing on which I agree with Liz Truss

audweb · 02/08/2022 11:23

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 02/08/2022 10:40

She's a Tory, she's not going to be a fan of SNP is she? Which is weird how much they hate each other when they are very similar... Guess that's just how it works though often.

Does that matter? Second biggest country in the Uk, she’s our elected first minister. It’s just rude to say you will ignore her, the job of PM is to work with all elected leaders in the UK, tough if you don’t like them.

JocelynBurnell · 02/08/2022 11:26

Nicola Sturgeon was elected by the Scottish electorate as their First Minister.

Liz Truss will not give the UK electorate the same opportunity to decide on whether she should be Prime Minister of the UK.

Liz Truss has complete disdain for democracy.

EhatBow · 02/08/2022 11:28

Do we know what degree she got from Oxford? Sunak's first is common knowledge, Truss' seems to be a secret.

Either way, she got into Oxford from a comprehensive school, she's not stupid, although she may well be inept

bluegardenflowers · 02/08/2022 11:36

Well insulting the First Minister is a great way to unite a country that probably doesn't actually want independence.

19lottie82 · 02/08/2022 11:38

WELL SAID LIZ

CounsellorTroi · 02/08/2022 11:38

I really hope she wins. Keir will wipe the floor with her.

Friffle · 02/08/2022 11:38

Not very skilled at this politics lark is Liz. What a dim-witted thing to say purely to gain some hurrahs and table thumping from whatever roomful of Tories you're desperate to appeal to in the moment.

Dunderhead.

Friffle · 02/08/2022 11:39

I would, at a minimum, expect someone running for the role of PM to keep their views about a democratically elected leader of a part of their own UK, to something inoffensive and bland.

Yup.

Watermelonsugarhighlove · 02/08/2022 11:40

VivaMazVegas · 02/08/2022 10:43

She’s right about Sturgeon though, plenty of Scots agree.

This 100%

DdraigGoch · 02/08/2022 11:40

Well about 50% of Scots agree with her, so how is it an insult to them?

newnamethanks · 02/08/2022 11:41

Can't wait for mini-Thatch to be PM. 'Oy! Putin! Stop Showing Off!' 'Northern plebs now you've been daft enough, again, to vote us in, have a pay cut you lazy slobs. You don't know what hard work is up there. We earn our dosh down here'. God help us if she's the best on offer. Which, apparently, she is 🙄

Because Rayner is well known for her diplomatic charm...

BerylBird · 02/08/2022 10:50

This who think Truss was right, or entitled to say it (eg @VivaMazVegas @Justcallmebebes) - are you Scottish / do you live in Scotland?

How is it not a slight against ALL Scots, to say their Parliament and their democratic votes are an irrelevance?

I'm Scottish and NS should be concentrating on issues like drug deaths.

ArcticSkewer · 02/08/2022 11:44

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 02/08/2022 11:15

I hope you're meaning that's how she got the job, through contacts, not that she must be smart having gone to Oxford. 😂

I cannot believe that people think you get in to Oxford, and from a comp, without being intelligent.

You can criticise many things about a person, but this isn't the 1800s. If you get a place, then a degree, from Oxford - you are intelligent.

It may be the case that other, equally or more intelligent, people do not get a place at Oxford. It doesn't mean they are, by definition, 'smarter' than other 'smart' people. It is also definitely true that having an A level in common sense is not a requirement for entry to Oxford. But it is not true that the 'educationally subnormal' get places, and then degrees, at Oxford.

The anti-intellectual snobbery of the UK is quite pathetic.

FiveDollarMilkshake · 02/08/2022 11:44

It’s not an insult to Scotland or the Scots, many agree with Liz on this.

Nicola has ignored many of the Scottish population and I can’t say I blame Liz for saying this in the context it was said.

Friffle · 02/08/2022 11:45

she's so utterly clueless that I almost feel sorry for her. she'll blurt out any old nonsense in a desperate attempt to get head pats from her party members.

ArcticSkewer · 02/08/2022 11:46

CounsellorTroi · 02/08/2022 11:38

I really hope she wins. Keir will wipe the floor with her.

He has been a sad disappointment with everyone else. Why would she be a better target than, for example, Johnson?

sashagabadon · 02/08/2022 11:48

Nicola has been regularly and consistently rude about Boris over the last few years - and he is also a democratically elected leader - so I am not sure that argument washes for her / her supporters to make in particular but I do agree with the general point that political leaders should not be rude about other political leaders as it is a hard job and everyone should respect the position if not the person - but Sturgeon is playing to her gallery when she is rude about Boris and Liz will be playing to hers too (plus disaffected Scots in Scotland).

Boris was never actually rude about Nicola back but I think that is because he did genuinely just ignore her (rather than say he does)

CounsellorTroi · 02/08/2022 11:38

I doubt he can wipe a floor with a mop. He's useless.

I'm not Starmer's biggest fan but he got the better of Johnson plenty of times during PMQs.

girlmom21 · 02/08/2022 11:56

I'm not Starmer's biggest fan but he got the better of Johnson plenty of times during PMQs.

Come on though, is that really an achievement?
The bar is reallllly low at the moment. Any decent opposition leader would be having an absolute field day.

ancientgran · 02/08/2022 11:58

I thought it was a terrible remark but also the follow on about lettering Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland know what "we" can do for them. Who is the we, presumably England but why? Are we not a union of equals and if we aren't then I don't blame Scotland for wanting independence. Horrible attitude.
