I'm not Scottish and I don't live in Scotland, but this statement by Liz Truss has made me seethe with rage. AIBU?

I know Nicola Sturgeon is not universally popular in Scotland but, by all measures, the SNP have a sizeable majority in Scotland and like it or not, she is the elected leader of the country, chosen by its population.

How can someone who is vying to be PM of the UK make such a comment as this without alienating, by definition, a majority of Scots? It's a terrible footing to start out on.

It just shows the low regard that she / the Tories have for the "other" nations of the UK outside of England / Westminster. If ever there was a great advert for independence for Scotland (or Wales, or reunification of Ireland), surely this is it?

English.
Not appalled and totally agree.
Let her get on with governing Scotland how she sees fit, nothing to do with us.

Hyperion100 · 02/08/2022 10:54

I believe Truss to be educationally sub normal and unbelievably inept at her job. I'm flabbergasted that shes managed to work herself in to this position.

JustLyra · 02/08/2022 10:55

It’s an appalling way to speak about the democratically elected leader of the Scottish Parliament.

Can only imagine how much of an issue she’s going to be for our international relationships given this and her altering of the statement removing mention of women’s reproductive rights without any discussion with other countries, such as Denmark and Norway, who had already signed it.

Dotjones · 02/08/2022 10:56

Thing is, she's right. Sturgeon is a bully, leading a party of bullies. They will shout and scream and whine unless they get their way. The referendum a few years ago showed a majority of Scots reject her brand of independence. That's all the SNP stand for.

OnaBegonia · 02/08/2022 10:56

How many Tory leaders has Sturgeon seen come and go? aye ok then

fizzywat · 02/08/2022 10:56

As a possible future PM, she might need to polish her diplomatic skills. Imagine if she said that about any other leader anywhere?

It is not about Sturgeon and Independence for Scotland, it is about her innate inability to be respectful of others in the political world.

I am not surprised though, this is what those who can vote for the next PM want, and she is playing to her audience. Doesn't give a damn about Scotland, Tories never did.

Scottishskifun · 02/08/2022 10:58

Sturgeon isn't exactly polite to many other parties leaders in the Scottish Parliament (mostly tory directed but other parties as well) when they ask her questions which she refuses to answer mostly. It's just these don't make national headlines!

It's a bit of a stupid thing to say so early on but I do agree with her! Sturgeon only cares about getting her 2nd referendum but dows very little about the Ness here including drug deaths, education and NHS. She also spent ages holding us to greater restrictions using long covid as her reasoning yet refuses to properly fund long covid support leaving 150,000 Scots in hell limbo!

Goldengoosey · 02/08/2022 10:58

I think what she really meant to say was best to ignore Scotland. We are well used to that. Seems we are going from one idiot to another idiot at No. 10. Her comments will only strengthen the support for independence 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

EhatBow · 02/08/2022 10:59

I don't think she's being dismissive of Scotland, I think she's being dismissive of a female leader. Some women are worse than the men for that, even the ones who are in influential positions, they somehow think they're not like other women.

"Attention seeking" isn't something you hear thrown at men.

jeaux90 · 02/08/2022 11:01

She's being rightfully dismissive of NS because she has taken a brazen attitude to womens rights by being a big supporter of self ID despite being presented evidence that this badly impacts women and girls.

Liz Truss whatever you think of her did the right thing regarding this issue.

(Im not a Tory voter either)

NightmareSlashDelightful · 02/08/2022 11:02

If you watch the infamous cheese/pork routes speech, it's easy to see how Truss operates. She leaves big pauses after vague populist statements, to allow for the crowd to work themselves up. You can see in her face; the glee that she can't quite believe she's getting away with the tripe that she's coming out with. It's a relatively Trumpish tactic.

42isthemeaning · 02/08/2022 11:04

Truss would be an absolute gift to Scottish independence.

You know she went to Oxford?

Lineala · 02/08/2022 11:07

Misogyny at it's worst.

FarmerRefuted · 02/08/2022 11:07

It doesn't matter what my personal opinion of Nicola Sturgeon or Liz Truss is, it was a shockingly unprofessional thing to say. They'll need to work together for the sake of the union that Truss claims to care so much about and how can they do that effectively when comments like this after being made? There doesn't have to be open friendliness but there should be mutual respect and professionalism.

FarmerRefuted · 02/08/2022 11:08

And I agree she would not have said it if Nicola Sturgeon was a man.

42isthemeaning · 02/08/2022 11:08

You know she went to Oxford?

And? So did many of these inept fools. That means absolutely nothing when it comes to her inability to be an effective leader. You can't learn common sense at university.

It's the country, not the gender.

We have the same love-hate relationship with French leaders and (in both directions) say all kinds of things we/they wouldn't necessarily about other leaders.

girlmom21 · 02/08/2022 11:12

Generally I'd agree with ignoring Nicola Sturgeon but I think it's a really immature approach for someone who'd need to be working so closely with her.

The 'educationally subnormal' don't get degrees from Oxford.
Common sense is an entirely different matter. She isn't 'educationally subnormal'

alonglongshot · 02/08/2022 11:14

I wonder if they have ever been in the same room as each other. Who would win in a scrappy fist fight? It's all a bit playground isn't it?

MercurialMonday · 02/08/2022 11:14

I think it's bad politics - think it act like it block a new vote be a politician - but don't say it and give SNP something to rally against.

I assume she thinks it will play well with Tory electorate she currently courting - but beyond the next vote you have to work with and govern and as PP says it doesn't look professional.

I hope you're meaning that's how she got the job, through contacts, not that she must be smart having gone to Oxford. 😂

Fair enough, but she's clearly lacking something. I think the pp may have being using a misguided and outdated term to describe her frustration at such a stupid comment by Truss.

TowerStork · 02/08/2022 11:17

Regardless of attitudes towards independence or Sturgeon, Truss is talking about ignoring the leader of a devolved government. That's the part that that's ignorant,
