It certainly fill you up
until lunchtime! Costs under 10p too!

If you want / need to be competitively frugal buy veg. Same price and calories as a pot noodle and so much healthier.

Peas tomorrow with a little cheese sauce- 55p in Lidl 😁

The sugar certainly keeps you going but you also need the coffee for energy. One without the other won’t work.

OK. So according to you I can drink my unsweetened coffee, eat two spoonfuls of sugar, and I'll be good to go until lunchtime?

titchy · 01/08/2022 19:50

Well obvs you need carbs as well! But buying seasonal veg, wonky shapes, grade 2 or 3, buying yellow stickered bread just before the shop shuts, are much healthier ways to eat for less than buying a bloody pot noodle.

Comedycook · 01/08/2022 19:51

For a very short time, coffee will fill the gap and give you a quick burst of energy. It's not a long term solution or replacement for food. Is your financial situation temporary? I hope so.

Absolutely. Go for it!

A jacket potato with beans would be the same price, healthier and more filling.

titchy · 01/08/2022 19:53

Dahl with onions also a fraction the cost of your cheesy peas.

Skinnermarink · 01/08/2022 19:54

I think 55p can go further than some peas in a paltry amount of cheese sauce tbh.

Yeah, no thanks. I'll stick to eating real food.

Mindthegob · 01/08/2022 20:18

Ok I want to hear the most nutritious, tasty ir filling use for my 55p.

You can get noodles for 9p, a carrot for about 8p a packet if strawberry laces for 33p.

Lentil dahl is pretty tasty too

Potatoes, cubed, fried or roasted. Top with a fried egg...no judgement from me if not free range!

I can't believe you drink one whole coffee!

I have a grain of coffee with half a teaspoon of water for breakfast - two grains if I'm feeling particularly hungry.

Stir fry veg with your noodles, risotto, jacket spud with mixed beans, pasta with tomato sauce, Spanish omelette.

titchy · 01/08/2022 20:41

Savoury pancakes.

pointythings · 01/08/2022 20:41

A whole grain of coffee? I just take a cup of boiling water and wave the jar of coffee around over the top of it. Keeps me going for a week.

Tin of kidney beans? Tinned tomatoes?
Pasta or rice if you had a bit more to spend another day?

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 01/08/2022 20:43

Utterly daft.
It's comments like this that vulnerable people pick up on.

Did you have a massive salad with it?

Grin
titchy · 01/08/2022 21:03

Well I've just looked at the Aldi website:

1kg pasta is £1.19, so 12p a portion. Add half a tin of tomatoes (14p), an onion (5p) and half a can of sardines in sauce (18p) - healthy meal with 2 portions of veg and some protein for less than 50p.

titchy · 01/08/2022 21:11

Another one - 1kg of long grain rice is 45p, so 7p a portion. Add an onion (5p), 100g of frozen peas (8p), same of sweetcorn (12p) and a free range egg (13p) for egg fried rice. Three portions veg and some protein all for 45p.

If you're this skint, I suggest putting your principles aside and buying non free range eggs.

titchy · 01/08/2022 21:20

Yeah obvs if you're literally needing to save pennies then buy battery eggs, but I wanted to illustrate that even with the 'luxury' of free range it is possible to make a meal which is both cheaper and more nutritious than the one OP suggested.

Yes you're right...it definitely is.

Mindthegob · 01/08/2022 21:25

Thanks for the suggestions. I am quite worried about the vulnerable people who will end in the gutter after necking two sweet coffees though. Should I ask for a deletion?

I am plump but skint for all those thinking I am surviving on a lettuce leaf!

I got some bread mix reduced in coop for 65p though- it made ten rolls! Big ones as well.

@titchy it sound delicious and I will be cooking that in a day or so, once I’ve ploughed through my peas 😁

You can get a sliced loaf for 85p and a jar of peanut butter for £1.20. Peanut butter on toast (2 slices) for less than 20p a portion is a better breakfast. You can get canned fruit for 50p and eat that across a few breakfasts.

You can get 48 Tesco wheat biscuits for £2.40 so 10p for a portion of 2. Add in some milk and sugar and it would fill a breakfast gap.

You can get 1kg of porridge oats for £1.30. 50g a portion costs 7p, add milk and salt or sugar. 2 pints of milk is £1.20 and you’d make at least 3 portions so 27p for a hot bowl of porridge.
