I'm really fed up of this nonsense. They keep on withdrawing food options, it's insane!

Other chocolate brands are available!

KateRusby · 01/08/2022 09:49

It happens the other way round too. Dairy free products suddenly contain milk and aren't suitable for people with allergies or vegans.

successstories · 01/08/2022 09:49

Yes, but most of the good organic dark ones are massively expensive! I used to buy Montezuma but they've put up prices so I can no longer justify buying them.

I understand it’s an issue for you that it’s got nuts in it, but what is the relevance of it now being vegan? Dark chocolate should be vegan.

PeasOff · 01/08/2022 09:53

Buy a different brand.

successstories · 01/08/2022 09:56

Dark chocolate should be vegan

Not necessarily. Some 75% or 80% dark chocolate has a tiny amount of milk.

I believe this one did. I'm not sure why they needed to add the hazelnut

Bourneville was vegan until quite recently. I now find it hard to find a reasonably priced vegan chocolate to use when baking for vegans.

BaddityHabbityHoppingPot · 01/08/2022 10:16

People with milk allergies will be relieved there's an option for them.
Unfortunately allergies and dietary requirements are swings and roundabo
uts.
But yes, blame vegans.

RollerPolarBear · 01/08/2022 10:27

Most of the dark chocolate I buy says suitable for vegans. I thought it was “dark” because it doesn’t contain milk. Coop and Morrisons dark chocolate is nice.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 01/08/2022 11:00

Isn’t it just the standard warning of ‘May’ contain milk, nuts etc?

I think OPs frustration lies with the fact that there's more and more vegans being catered for but at the expense of other Dietary requirements. Theres suddenly loads more vegan products in the Free From aisles but gluten/nut/soya free being taken off to accommodate. Great if you do have milk allergy/intolerance, frustrating if you have different/other intolerances phased out to compensate.

Veganism is a choice, food allergies and intolerances are not.

Soubriquet · 01/08/2022 11:07

Vegetarians are getting the short stick over vegans too.

They can’t order a dish with cheese/milk etc because it’s now veganised

KeyboardWarriorsUnite · 01/08/2022 11:19

I've just looked online. They have a selection of organic dark chocolate - the vegan ones, yes. But also a 70% one and an 85% one that don't have hazelnut in. The 70% one isn't available in a 100g bar in my local store, but it does have 5x25g bar pack that actually works out cheaper. The 85% is available in both options.

Marvellousmadness · 01/08/2022 11:23

Boohoo.

amoobaa · 01/08/2022 11:29

Rather than pointing the finger at people with specific dietary requirements, why not point the finger at the retailer?

You are annoyed with the wrong people.

A vegan with a nut allergy will be in the same boat as you. It’s got nothing to do with vegans.

But yes. Let’s blame the vegans. That seems the most fashionable thing to do at the moment.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 01/08/2022 11:31

Its irrelevant then that they’ve made it vegan, because that isn’t your problem.

You could complain about them adding nuts without using it as an opportunity to have a pop at veganism. As a cheese loving vegetarian I don’t like the way my options have been reduced to cater for vegans, but as veganism is so much better for the planet, it seems distasteful to complain.

Fatballs · 01/08/2022 11:43

Some friends of ours run a small pub with a very limited food menu. Demand for vegan and vegetarian food is relatively low so it doesn’t make sense for them to offer separate options. Consequently, they only offer vegan as it’s the lowest common denominator. I know a couple of vegetarians who have stopped eating there because of it.

PetraBP · 01/08/2022 11:51

Surely other nut free dark chocolates are available?

EmotionalBruises · 01/08/2022 12:07

Thanks, OP. I'm always on the hunt for decently priced vegan chocolate that I can actually eat! I loved Bourneville until I had to stop eating it as they added milk to the ingredients. It's nice seeing milk being removed instead of added for once.

BaddityHabbityHoppingPot · 01/08/2022 12:08

Veganism is a choice, food allergies and intolerances are not.

Milk allergies aren't a choice. Animal cruelty is though.

Yeah that looks like it's a 'produced in a factory that also uses nuts' warning

Ontomatopea · 01/08/2022 12:13

No point moaning about it being made vegan. Moan about the nuts sure but leave vegans out of it.

Yup, but that's not the chocolate op is talking about. Pretty sure the essentials range isn't organic.
