To be struggling with smelly armpits?

its only just started but I’ve had to throw clothes away because I can’t get the sweat smell out (tried vinegar and bicarb of soda, tried oxy-stuff, drowning in febreeze, nothing). I’ve tried various deodorants, Mitchum, Sure etc. Tried sticks and sprays. My pits just smell all of a sudden. I’m washing them regularly, I don’t understand. I’m worried I’m going to have no clothes left!

any tips for anyone whose struggles with this? Thanks

There’s a deodorant that’s stops the glands sweating I’ll see if I can find it - it works!

Peri-menopause?

@DitchumTheMitchum Hi OP! Smile

First of all, I'd 'Ditch the Mitchum' as that's what made the arms of my t-shirts smell. I found cotton t shirts to be the worst, especially black ones! I got to the point I was feeling so self concious and I was constantly smelling my pits Sad What I've found to help is wash the t shirt as soon as possible! I use Non Bio wash powder (Bio may be better though?) and Unstoppables and that seems to have helped Smile

Also, I use dettol soap on my pits first, shave (so the razor is going onto clean skin) and then use my shower gel as normal. I found my razor absolutely stunk before doing this!

GuyFawkesDay · 31/07/2022 20:35

And often it's clothes, not you.

Wash everything in Halo sports wash. It's brilliant for teen pits and smelly sport kit, it works a treat. Rub it into the pits of clothes before putting into the wash. It really does help!

Palg68 · 31/07/2022 20:35

Are you using an actual bar of soap to wash with rather than shower gel? Washing clothes on 60 and putting less in the load (don't overfill).

Try a body exfoliator to remove all the dead skin. I've been using Mitchum sticks and they are fabulous.

If you have an acid toner, wipe over clean armpits with that.

DelilahBucket · 31/07/2022 20:36

Is it you or is it the clothes? You need to be wearing 100% cotton clothing.
Dryclor stops you from sweating where you put it, but you will sweat more elsewhere. Put it on at night before bed and drink plenty of water.

dementedpixie · 31/07/2022 20:39

I use sure or dove maximum protection cream that comes in a box. Use soap rather than shower gel. Use Dr beckmann spray for deodorant stains on the clothes (had to buy my last stuff online as I couldn't find it in the shop.any more)

DessicatedWithering · 31/07/2022 20:41

Use old fashioned soap for your armpits.
Then use a proper non eco non quick wash for your clothes. Wash at 40 with bio powder. You can pretreat with Oxy spray. Then use scent boosters in the drum and Dettol laundry cleaner in the fabric conditioner drawer. That's the only routine that stops DS synthetic sports kit honking.

You can also get long term deodorants like perspi-guard or perspirex from Amazon.

A580Hojas · 31/07/2022 20:42

Turn top inside out. Wet the inside of the armpit with cold water. Scrub with a bar of disinfectant soap like Dettol or some anti-bac washing up liquid.

Wash on at least 40 degrees with biological washing powder like Persil.

Dry inside out on a line in bright sunlight.

Staynow · 31/07/2022 20:42

I had Trust recommended on here, you can get it in Boots, it doesn't stop you sweating (which is healthier I'd imagine) but it stops the smell. I have a real problem with smelling if I'm stressed at work and this is the only thing i've found that works.

A580Hojas · 31/07/2022 20:43

Washing with an Eco-Egg at 30 degrees on a short cycle just isn't going to cut it, sadly, no matter what the advertisers want to tell us.

Yes to halo! It’s the best!

I always suffered from this and switched to natural deodorant (pit rock) after trying everything else. Had to endure a week of whiffs pits but plain sailing since.

But otherwise Halon is amazing for getting the smell out of clothes so they are less likely to smell next time you wear them.

Helpyou · 31/07/2022 20:48

Driclor works for me. I now only need to apply it about once a fortnight overnight and use regular spray deodorant day to day. It hasn't made me sweat more in other places.
My shower routine every morning is a proper old fashioned bar of soap in the pits plus shower gel. Works for me! I do get occasional sweaty days and I'll just remember to reapply driclor that night.

OldGreyAppleTest · 31/07/2022 20:54

Just a month ago I didtchum my mitchum after being happy with it for years. On a whim bought Triple Dry from Boots and it's changed my life. That's not an exaggeration! I was so skeptical of the instructions at first (apply at night and do nothing in the morning?!) but now I can go 48 hours without re-applying and not a hint of a whiff about the pits or clothes. It's a miracle.

Cut down your meat consumption (if you eat meat). It seems to make a noticeable difference to how one’s sweat smells.

Wear only natural fibres. Synthetic fibres cling on to food and body odours.

As everyone says - use proper bar soap. (Not Dove which only pretends to be soap.) And shave regularly to exfoliate underarm skin.

lurchermummy · 31/07/2022 21:00

Bar soap is much better than shower gel, then the Mitchum
that comes in stick form, not roll on or spray. I'm menopausal and get very hot and that works for me.

Purpleavocado · 31/07/2022 21:03

Do you use biological detergent? Anything non bio starts my clothes smelling. Bar soap helps and the extra strong Sure

Cookiedough123 · 31/07/2022 21:12

Since I got pregnant i felt like i stunk of sweat I found the scented deodorants made me smell even worse. I tried perspirex, it's about £8.50 and its not a big bottle but it does last about a month. I dont need to apply it every day either. It has more of a chemical smell at first but once it's dry you can't smell anything. I have used it 3 months now and it's made a huge difference.

CherryRipe1 · 31/07/2022 21:18

Bar soap like wright's coal tar or imperial leather. Leave it on your pits for a while, rinse, repeat. I had one really reeky pit and resorted to surgeons scrub,
(Betadine). I found men's roll on antiperspirant worked best for me but other suggestions on here may work better for you.

Cucumberbund · 31/07/2022 21:25

This improved for me once I cut out coffee and then caffeine altogether. I also take Vogel menopause support tablets and have noticed I can use any type of deodorant now not just the specific one that only work for me before. I have read about magnesium deficiency being linked to excessive sweating so perhaps that is why the tablets helped.

Driclor.
The best thing you'll ever buy.
You apply it at night for a few nights, then every couple of nights.
I now use it weekly only, I never sweat under my arms any more, never pong anymore, it's the best anti persperent I've ever used - and I've tried them all!

Knackeredmommy · 31/07/2022 21:38

If it's come on recently, is it actually sweaty armpits or a change in your body smell that you're noticing. After covid, I smelt different to myself but nobody in my home noticed a change.
