Grim gym changing room behaviour

HandbagsnGladrags · 29/07/2022 14:15

Came out of pool this morning to get my stuff for my shower and a woman was cutting her toenails on the bench where people put their stuff. She had a towel down but still 🤮 Am I right that this is completely grim? She also had her arse stuck out right in front of the locker I was trying to get to and made no move whatsoever to let me through when it was clear I was trying to get to my locker.

the actual chances of someone punching you in the face are slim though. You're gym bunnies - duck!
And if you really can't speak to someone who is sticking their bum in your way, go and get a member of staff.
You'd hate German gym changing rooms. Germans get naked at the drop of a hat, and they take moisturising every square centimetre of their bodies after a shower very seriously. You'll often be sitting on the bench tying up your shoelaces, flanked on either side by tanned naked women, one foot up on the bench, moisturising their legs like there's no tomorrow. Nobody bats an eyelid, unless they are in someone's way and then either they realise and move or someone asks them to move.
Nobody gets punched.

Boxowine · 29/07/2022 16:10

You haven't seen it all until you've seen someone with their leg in the hand basin so that they can shave their pubes. That's quite an eyeful, let me tell you.

StarlightLady · 29/07/2022 16:18

I have no problem with naked bodies, it is a changing room after all. A bum in the way is a bum in the way, be it naked, in knix or in a duvet coat. Likewise if someone is straight out of the shower and sitting straight onto a bench, l wouldn’t do it, but it’s not a concern to me.

But l do draw the line at nails and shaving.

I didn't renew my membership after seeing a woman drying her muff at the hairdryer bar...

@Hotenoughtoburnasausage sorry but that just made me laugh! How big was her bush that it warranted it’s own blow dry? 😅😅😅

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 29/07/2022 16:20

You could ask her to move.

I've only ever used local authority changing rooms and yes some people walk around naked (if they dare!) but most people seem to behave normally. If anything really offends you all you need to do is say this to them or to reception.

That's because apparently there seem to be more nudists (or a more relaxed attitude to it) either on the continent or in certain countries.

I'll never forget a few years back a male colleague of mine was recently married to a German woman and went on holiday with her and his ILs to beach, only it was a nudist beach. He was quite shocked Shock telling me he had to see them nude and didn't want to see this!

SummerWinterSummerWinter · 29/07/2022 16:27

I was once on the tube when a girl sat next to me was biting her nails then spitting them out so they pinged onto the legs (wearing office trousers) of the man stood in the aisle. I told her it was disgusting and to not do it and she just kind of giggled and said 'I didn't realise'. People are grim.

amusedbush · 29/07/2022 16:29

I've seen gross things in the gym changing room but I was particularly offended by a woman aggressively filing her nails (not just quickly smoothing a jagged bit, properly going to town on all of them) on a train in Paris. The thought of her nail dust all over the floor and seats gave me the boke.

Although that was nothing compared to the woman who took her shoes off on a bus from Glasgow to Edinburgh as soon as she sat down, pulled her manky feet up onto the seat and started picking her toenails. I almost phoned the police! EnvyGrin

Floogal · 29/07/2022 16:29

Bins overflowing with pissy nappies and sanitary towels. Even seen nappies discarded in cubicle changing rooms. Even found a discarded wet thong by lockers. A lot of it boils to fact they're the only swimming pool in town and that they have no competition.
That said I hate it when people go swimming without showering and get their make up in the water

Oh yeah, the ol FKK (Frei Korper Kulture - Free Body Culture as a direct translation) is A Thing. But only where it's permitted.

But again, i've never been in a gym where intimite or personal shaving was permitted and I've never seen anyone clip their toenails.

fizzywat · 29/07/2022 16:37

This is why I avoid gyms, changing rooms, swimming pools, anywhere really that gross folk can share their sweat, cut nails, naked pubes, and so on. I just think why should I endure all that drama and total lack of self awareness.

So I walk and climb hills. And shower and do my grooming privately in the accommodation or at home.

I'm not a prude but I don't want to see any of the things described, so I do my best to avoid.

waterlego · 29/07/2022 16:40

Ewwww. I find the sound of nail clippers really sets my teeth on edge and toenails are particularly rank, so I would find this minging. Just do it at home, surely?

The rankest thing I’ve seen in the gym changing room was a woman sitting bare-arsed on one of the benches. No towel underneath her! 🤮

midsomermurderess · 29/07/2022 15:57

What is going on here? Almost daily an adult woman declares that she was so flabbergasted, shocked, amazed, startled by something that she quite simply lost the power of speech, was in fact utterly struck dumb. What is this modern phenomenon? Or they didn’t even attempt to say anything because huffing, under-breath muttering, hard-staring passive aggression is so much easier? I hate the phrase ‘use your words’, it’s for 5 year olds. But if you want someone to stop doing something, say so.

V patronising. All these people who reckon they'd pick an argument with a total stranger in public. Course you would.

I agree!

If I'm not the one who's broken social rules, I don't see why I should have to endure a confrontation that has a lot of potential to turn into nastiness and ruin my day.

I'm not conflict averse in public either! But I pick what I use my energy (and calculated risk) on very carefully after some very unpleasant experiences. People can be very unpredictable.

OP did nothing wrong by having a healthy whinge online in a safe place, whether or not she decided to play Captain Planet and lecture a stranger.

Ceriane · 29/07/2022 17:18

At my gym I have seen a woman eating her lunch in the steam room, sandwiches, crisps, fruit 🍎 honestly!!! There was also a girl who would bring her big stereo and put on loud music while she dried and curled her hair, put on her makeup and sprayed herself with loads of body spray and perfume, spend ages moisturising and would take over the whole changing room to do all the things you do in your own bathroom/bedroom. There was also a girl who would sit on the counter completely naked, gazing at herself in the mirror while she brushed her hair and ate an apple at the same time.

Women sitting on the benches with no knickers on annoys me!

That's just wrong, for all sorts of reasons..yuk

Brefugee · 29/07/2022 17:26

"excuse me, can i get past to my locker, please"

stops clipping nails "sure" moves aside

"by the way, you should do that at home"

punches OP in the face

altenative ending: OP goes to the gym management and asks if they can put signs up about nail clipping

NooNakedJacuzziness · 29/07/2022 17:27

I've shared this on here before but there used to be a sign in the changing rooms at my old gym politely asking people to remember not to poo in the showers.

girlfrien · 29/07/2022 17:28

HandbagsnGladrags · 29/07/2022 15:15

Sounds like OP needs telling to have a direct conversation with the person concerned, rather than whinge about it anonymously online afterwards. 😂

I don't know why it should be up to me to tell people they're disgusting. I didn't particularly want a confrontation which would have ruined the lovely chilled out morning I'd had.

But what's the point of telling us, we can't do anything about it. Just tell a member of staff if the toenails bother you. As for asking ppl to move, nothing new there. People are in the way if each other all the time.

over50andfab · 29/07/2022 17:33

Keep in mind washing, drying and brushing hair will cause more of this to shed everywhere and drying ourselves off with a towels after a shower will cause dead skin cells to shed.

Of course! Nudist beaches where it's allowed is fine! He just wasn't expecting it.

MatildaTheCat · 29/07/2022 17:42

So many. DL again unfortunately. Perhaps they attract a grim type 🤣

worst was a used tampon in the shower cubicle. People very regularly leave all their rubbish in the showers rather than carry it 3 metres to the bin.

once a woman showering her child who had profuse diarrhoea and despite me saying she needed to inform reception so it could be cordoned off and cleaned she knew better. I did it obviously.

not grim but very CF a woman literally snatched the hairdryer I was using and started using it on herself. When I asked her to give it back she told me it was cold out and she had wet hair- as, obviously, did I. She also had her dc in the adults only area and was feeding them messy snacks which were dropping all over the floor.

oh so many. On the whole it’s a nice place, honestly. Oh, several thefts over the years too and a total disregard for the disabled parking bays.

Actually I hope DL are reading this.

WTAF? Shock

I agree that's gross. But I'd have either spoken to her or reception and said that wasn't acceptable behaviour. Which it isn't. Surprised she didn't scorch her muff with the heat from the dryer to be honest!

Ellie56 · 29/07/2022 17:45

At the gym today some random woman had left all her bags and stuff strewn all over the place while she went to dry her hair, leaving very little room for the rest of us.

One lady wryly commented that we no longer live in the Age of Enlightenment, but in the Age of Entitlement. So true.
