How much would you spend on children's holiday clothes

So I have 2 dc, 5 and 2 and we are going on holiday next week (we booked it last minute) it’s my DS’s first holiday (he is 23 months) I’m really looking forward to it but I keep worrying about all the stuff I have to buy, haven’t bought anything for myself and the dc’s yet! Help!

I would buy according to what they need rather than specifically holiday wear. So look at their current wardrobe and add on a few nice extras.

demotedreally · 28/07/2022 21:35

What do you need?
We don't buy clothes specifically for holiday normally, although most years I get myself a new bikini

bare · 28/07/2022 21:36

As long as he has a cossie to swim, sorts and a t shirt or two, that's fine

Celeryfavour · 28/07/2022 21:36

Why do you need to buy anything?

Badgirlgonegood · 28/07/2022 21:38

Exactly how long have you got? Vinted is great for stuff like this!!

BendingSpoons · 28/07/2022 21:38

Mine already have swimming stuff as they go to lessons. They have various t-shirts and shorts. Probably not enough for the whole holiday but I plan to take some hand wash to rinse out a few pairs of shorts.

What is it you need to get? Everyday clothes or things like swimming bits? Can you look for second hand stuff to keep costs down?

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 28/07/2022 21:40

We're half way through the summer and have dealt with some hot weather already so what is needed that you don't already have?

SwedishEdith · 28/07/2022 21:40

I met a woman at the airport once who said she deliberately took the older clothes and then left them there/donated them to charity.

LadyCatStark · 28/07/2022 21:41

For children that age, it would definitely be a Primark trip.

user143677433 · 28/07/2022 21:41

I was going to say “nothing” (I have teenagers) but remembering back to that age I would get them shorts, lightweight trousers and new T-shirts (which then got worn for 9 months of the year until outgrown).

I mostly bought from supermarkets or H&M and probably spent £50-£100 between the two of them, but it totally depends on your budget.

I do look back on holiday photos and often think “aw, he was cute in that outfit” so totally worth it if you can afford it, even if frivolous!

AnnaBlush · 28/07/2022 21:42

Hi
I am guessing you are going abroad? Do you not have some summer t- shirts and shorts for them already? Would you have anyone you can borrow things from? My sister and me have similar aged kids so usually can borrow the swimming cover ups, water wings, or even things like adapters)
Oh I did notice Next have lovely sandals on sale for kids btw
I also tend to pick up summer clothing from charity shops as it is sometimes in good condition as it’s gets less wear than winter stuff
In relation to clothing for yourself again do you not have light clothing, stuff from previous holiday or friends to borrow?
Appreciate previous clothing doesn’t alway fit 🙈 (my summer wardrobe is getting smaller 🤣) but it is only a week
I also tend to bring detergent capsules and just hand wash some of the kids clothing as I know they need so many outfit changes

AliceMcK · 28/07/2022 21:43

1-2 swimming costumes depending how much swimming is being done, a couple of nice tops & shirts for evening, a nice hoodie/cardie if it gets cool at night. The rest I only use old worn clothes as I don’t care how dirty or damage they get they can be thrown away after instead of dragging dirty washing home.

3WildOnes · 28/07/2022 21:44

I don't really buy anything specific for holidays. They just wear their summer clothes.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 28/07/2022 21:45

Cut the legs off outgrown trousers to make shorts.

The DC summer clothing range is on sale at the moment.

CatSeany · 28/07/2022 21:46

I buy enough for half a week, taking into account spares i.e. he would need two lots of shorts and t shirts per day for 3-4 days. I'll do a load of washing when I need to at some point during the week away. Otherwise I'd end up buying a load of clothes we wouldn't ever use in the UK which would feel like a waste.

Rainallnight · 28/07/2022 21:46

We went away as soon as the schools broke up so I didn’t actually have lots of summer clothes in because they were in uniform five days a week. They were ok for T-shirts but I got them a few extra pairs of shorts each.

Crocs.

Rash vests and swimming shorts.

Proudboomer · 28/07/2022 21:47

A couple of swim suits and a rash vest each. T shirts, shorts and everything else needed would be taken out of what we already had.

Favouritefruits · 28/07/2022 21:54

Up until this year I’d just buy everything from Next 7pairs of shorts and 7t shirts 2 hoodies, new socks and sandals, I’d buy them at the start of summer and they’d last the season as well as the holiday. This year i have cut down with price increases a bought tshirts from Primark and bought the £6 next shorts in black so I could use them for the kids PE lessons too.

Simonjt · 28/07/2022 21:56

I just take the clothes he wears at home for that season, if there will be a lot of swimming I do buy a second costume so he always has a dry one.

SallyWD · 28/07/2022 21:57

I don't buy anything for holidays - they already have summer clothes and swimming costumes, sun hats and sunglasses. What more do you need?

PuffinMcStuffin · 28/07/2022 21:59

As others have said, can you not just pack the summer clothes your children already have? I live in a cold part of the country but even my DC have shorts and t-shirts.

Riverlee · 28/07/2022 21:59

I also don’t buy anything specifically for holidays. It may prompt me to buy new stuff to replace worn out or too small clothes, but I’ve never brought ‘a holiday wardrobe’ for my dc (or me).

JassyRadlett · 28/07/2022 22:00

The only time I've ever bought 'holiday clothes' is when we've been flying into a different season and the kids don't have clothes the right size. So we're about to go on holidays to summer hemisphere winter, DS1 has shot up so I've bought him a new hoodie. That sort of thing.

We live in southern England so the summer gets hot enough that their clothes work for any summer holiday we're likely to go on.

WalkingOnSonshine · 28/07/2022 22:00

There’s a lot of summer stuff in the sales or I’d probably spend £10-15 on Vinted and then stick it back on when I came back.

MistyRock · 28/07/2022 22:01

Generally a few pairs of shorts, one piece of swimwear, cap, sunglasses and sun lotion. I always take wet wipes as they're usually more expensive and nappies/swim nappies etc. I take older t shirts as they generally get stained with sunlotion. For myself, swimwear, sun dress x 2, fake tan and maybe sandals.
