To ask if you’re planning to refuse to pay energy bills?

I’ve seen a few posts here and there on social media about collectively refusing to pay energy bills when the price hikes in October.

I was wondering if many people are on board/planning to do this?
(YABU = not refusing to pay, YANBU = refusing to pay?)

Most recent post I have seen is by a page called ‘dontpayuk’ on Instagram www.instagram.com/p/CghIfyeseTv/?igshid=YzAyZWRlMzg=

I am really concerned about how our household is going to manage to keep up with bills this winter.

Jesus fucking Christ, are you for real?

How the fuck do you expect people with families to just take up more work? As if it's that easy?

And telling people they should sell their possessions just to be able to afford to have a shower or a warm meal.

You should be hanging your head in shame.

Earn more or use less energy. That’s your two choices if you can’t afford to pay for your current usage. You’ll be getting some help from the state, but beyond that, it’s down to you.

And no, it’s not me who should be ashamed if you can’t provide for your family.

We have clamped right down esp gas as only have the hot water on sparingly.
Electricity is harder as children need it for various things due to disability.
My husband works hard enough, and I would like to work more but due to children's high care needs unless I give them to the state there is nothing else I can do about it.
This winter is going to be grim, I am preparing as much as I can though with electronic blankets that are low cost to run etc.

If you have a smart meter, they can swap you to a prepayment meter (and tariff) remotely. You’ll pay more for your energy in perpetuity!

Why don't you carry yourself over to the Daily Mail, madam.

I have heating on only hour in a morning and 2 in the evening😳 I thought that was relatively normal.

Insulation makes big difference ESPECIALLY windows. God even the double glazing isn't that helpful in our house so we added extra layer with plexiglass. It makes unbelievable difference!

It’s sad that the idea of you having responsibility to provide for your own family is now viewed as right-wing.

Why don’t you spend less time posting on here and more time thinking about your family’s needs. Blaming others rather than improving your situation is shameful.

What do you do with the plexiglass? Do you need to glue it on or something?

We have single glazed (old sash windows) and I think I want to be better prepared this winter. It’s the condensation that bothers me the most. I was thinking about sticking the sheets on the windows but it’s going to be a bit of a pain cutting cutting down to 30+ small pieces for each pane.

Wishyfishy · 29/07/2022 16:15

And yes I’m with you @Bubblebubblebah a few hours heating a day for about 5 months a year. I do want to have a better plan for the windows though.

Ontomatopea · 29/07/2022 16:19

I'm just going to buy a couple of oodies for everyone for Christmas and birthdays and we'll all live in them.

Bubblebubblebah · 29/07/2022 16:19

It stopped condensation.
You have more options, you can make it into a frame to fit in front of the current window, like swcondary glazing, or you can stick it on currents window. The plastic double glazed have usually have shape you can fit it into the frame few mm in front of the glass and stick it with invisible ailicone or glue. You wouldn't know it's there. You just create barrier between window with cold glass leaking that cold into warm room.

B&Q sells them really quite cheap if you want to first try it on some. I did that so it wouldn't be waated money.

You can also buy alraedy done in frames with magnets if you have budget for it, so you can take them off when needed.

Bubblebubblebah · 29/07/2022 16:20

Just to add I did it in one room about 4 years ago out of frustration and since then done the rest. Looks like it comes handy now😳

I don't think loads of people will refuse to pay energy bills, but I do think a growing number of people will be unable to pay their energy bills.

As the costs have gone up more than the £400, the govt help just means the increased costs will be slightly less for a few months before that's all used up & we have to pay the full, probably even higher by then prices.

I have no plans to do anything that stupid.
All that will happen is you'll trash your credit record, they'll fit a payg meter, probably at a higher rate & then you will have no energy until after you've paid back some of the debt as well as for the energy you want to use in advance.

There will be costs for the non payment/new meter of course, so your bill will be even bigger.

Why would anyone do that to themselves if they didn't have to?
