Remove their shoes. I have very pale cream carpets and no one in the household wears shoes in the house. My niece recently called and it was heavily raining, she had cork sole shoes on which sucked up lots of water which she tramped over my carpets. I asked her to take them off as wet soggy prints were being left behind. I do not have to ask some people but feel awkward when I do ask.

My conclusion from reading hundreds of these threads is that shoes off is predominately a lower middle class thing.

@TheKeatingFive I don’t know, I’m extraordinarily upper class and we take shoes off in all our properties. Perhaps it’s just a mainland European aristocracy custom rather than an English one.

Simonjt · 27/07/2022 17:05

We’re a shoes off household, no one passes the threshold in shoes unless they’re wearing shoe
covers, or they are a non-walking baby.

I always ask people when they arrive, for most the shoes outside the front door is all the sign they need. I would never walk into someones home with shoes on, it would be incredibly disrespectful.

Lovebeingamummy2 · 27/07/2022 17:06

@sunsetsandsandybeaches I second this this is what I do

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/07/2022 17:06

Yes, I understand what shoe bags are. I'm just thinking how big a dick one would have to be to actually have them in the house.

YANBU. I think it is the height of rudeness when people don't offer to remove shoes.

And I think it's the height of rudeness if people just take off their shoes.

I'm talking about the U.K. yes

mathanxiety · 27/07/2022 17:08

@GT22 I hope you presented your partner's grandfather with the mop when he was leaving and asked him to do the easy cleanup.

I don't think it's rude to ask guests to remove footwear. I think it's rude to assume you can keep it on. It's better to follow the cue of the hosts.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/07/2022 17:08

What in earth is wrong with bare feet?

On MN people have a real aversion to them. It’s so weird. IRL they’re just a normal body part and no one swoons seeing them!

Or how big a dick you would look wearing them.

Very odd. It's like objecting to hands - or noses.

abovedecknotbelow · 27/07/2022 17:12

I have one very good friend who is uncomfortable talk g her shoes of. She brings 'indoor shoes' with her when she goes to anyone's house. I don't know anyone else who wouldn't automatically take their shoes off in someone's home. I hate shoes, take them off as soon as I can.

Its just short of asking someone to gown up before putting sitting on a chair or donning gloves before touching their coat.

There is no escaping it. Its simply rude to put your floors above your guests.

Mississipi71 · 27/07/2022 17:13

I think it is pretentious but I do adhere to anybody else's house rules. I always have to wonder though, why on earth anybody would have the impractical colour cream, to walk on.

Maisa45 · 27/07/2022 17:13

I'm a dick for having shoe bags in the house? I'm a dick for not wanting dirty carpets and for providing people coming into my house who don't want to remove shoes with an alternative? Yeah OK then.

user1492809438 · 27/07/2022 17:14

The shoes off thing came about because after the war middle class women were having to do their own housework [just can't get the staff daahling!]

sabbii · 27/07/2022 17:14

defo not unreasonable, no-one wears shoes in carpetted areas of my home- I leave a set of sandals and slippers by the front door for guests. I think I am one of the few billion people who don't allow shoes in their homes. In Asia particularly it is looked down upon and unclean

925XX · 27/07/2022 17:14

Right, I have made up my mind. I am going to ask people to remove their shoes, change their clothes, wear gloves and a hair net and stay in the kitchen. Sorted!

I really would think you were a dick re shoe bags, yep.

And I am very firmly in the, 'Take your fucking shoes off' camp.

I was given a cheap pair of white slippers once when I went for dinner. I was embarrassed and we looked ridiculous.

The couple broke up and their apt was sold. I often wonder if they still think about that precious floor.

Whereas I, and many others, think it is extremely disrespectful to just take your shoes off as you walk through my door.

Maybe throw in a covid test while you're at it 😆
