Remove their shoes. I have very pale cream carpets and no one in the household wears shoes in the house. My niece recently called and it was heavily raining, she had cork sole shoes on which sucked up lots of water which she tramped over my carpets. I asked her to take them off as wet soggy prints were being left behind. I do not have to ask some people but feel awkward when I do ask.

I personally hate being forced to remove my shoes when entering someones house.

It particularly pisses me off when they have threadbare, worn carpet

I didn't experience this practice at all until I moved down south. Never took my shoes off in anyone's house in the North West when growing up.

Blackberrybunnet · 27/07/2022 19:02

If you're going to insist on no shoes, you could at least provide slides or slip ons - I hate walking around someone else's house in my socks - not to mention the embarrassment of being caught out with holes! I find the whole shoes off thing rather precious TBH, although I would definitely offer to remove shoes if mine were muddy.

I'll join you. As well as only drinking fancy tea without milk, I hate potatoes.

I can sense the mother grabbing the rosary as we speak 😂😂

Eleusa · 27/07/2022 19:12

I'm happy with whatever- we keep shoes on at home (we have lots of animals so floors are never going to be pristine) but I don't mind taking them off at other people's houses.

What I do dislike is when people take their shoes off in my house when I've suggested they don't. I don't have a problem with feet, I just a) don't like the idea that they think I'm a "shoes off" person, and b) find it very awkward to stand there while a grown man (say) takes his shoes off and presents himself in his stockinged feet as if he's doing me a favour. You're not doing me a favour and you look ridiculous.

I'm going to go look for a child ear piercing thread now.

I prefer the loo brush ones myself

Ha there is a thread open right now about a woman seeing a 2 year old having shellac nails done at a salon!!go for your lives.

Greenleaf22 · 27/07/2022 19:28

I just don’t let people in my living room/rest of the house 😀 I keep them in the kitchen as that room can be walked on with shoes, (it gets washed twice/three times a day) that solves the problem

@Eleusa Agree with this entirely! I have a shoes on house, it actually does irritate me slightly when people take their shoes off, especially if I've asked them to keep their shoes on. But I don't have to do that often as it's not a thing around here, I don't know anyone who does this at all.

There must be some foreign influence in our ancestor for us to have ended up like this.

So, so true.

Just keep your shoes on. Please.

TheHumanExperience · 27/07/2022 20:04

I don't understand people who wear shoes indoors.... filthy habit!

I have no qualms telling people to remove their shoes or put on shoe covers.

Your house, your rules.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 27/07/2022 20:04

We had a dog until early this year so the downstairs floors are all laminate/tiles and we mopped probably every other day minimum so it really didn’t matter to us. You’d be hard pressed to find a person with shoes grubbier than the dog could get Grin.

We don’t wear shoes upstairs but the only people going up there are family really so it’s no biggie to ask them to just slip off their shoes.

StatelyHomo · 27/07/2022 20:08

I suppose I just think that 'shoes on' people also read the Daily Mail. Not that I would ever generalise or anything.

Sydney0101 · 27/07/2022 20:14

I am definitely a shoes off person and my family are the same. However, in laws are the opposite, they will walk around the house with their shoes on. I think it's quite disgusting given everything you step on outside and to drag that around your home is just nasty in my opinion. My husband has changed also now and keeps shoes off and his family have also come to learn to take shoes off before coming my home.

I have shoes outside my door so people generally get the hint but unless someone is coming to fix something quick in my house I'll allow them and then clean after.

My Health visitor came recently and she put these little plastic shoe covers over her shoes and walked in and I thought that was pretty smart and ideal for both our ends

Ladyof2022 · 27/07/2022 20:16

I voted not, BUT I think you are being unreasonable to have pale carpeting anywhere but your own bedroom.

I got rid of ALL my carpets, thoughout the entire house, and replaced it with pale coloured laminate, or sheet cushion vinyl in the wet areas.

Best thing I ever did! So clean and hygienic!

Surgarblossom · 27/07/2022 20:22

I have a no shoes policy in my house. I have spare pairs of slippers for my guests and shoes covers for tradespeople

This is the opposite of how I see it- I imagine "shoes off" people reading the Daily Mail (or possibly the Express) and keeping the plastic cover on their sofa while "shoes on" people read either the LRB or the Racing Post and leave a trail of either muesli or dog hair everywhere 😂

MasterBeth · 27/07/2022 20:32

TheTeenageYears · 27/07/2022 16:39

@MasterBeth Covid made people look at hygiene routines differently. Many people now walk in the house and immediately wash their hands but wouldn't have done that previously. Some people isolated post for days and changed clothes after being outside, I'm presuming they didn't do all that and then walk around the house in shoes.

Yes, and most of those behaviours are stupid because Covid is an airborne disease. “Outside” is not a death trap that requires an airlock.

I can understand not wanting muddy boots on a white carpet but for aesthetic reasons. It’s not a health risk.

Saucepanwarrior · 27/07/2022 20:34

All this talk about class. I’m in a strictly no shoes country. Tbh people here watching UK tv series etc always comment on why so many have carpets, how disgusting it must be. It’s almost impossible to explain it’s about different cultures, it’s just seen as extremely unhealthy and dirty. Even visited someone who had carpet in the bathroom once. 😳😂

PMSL. I haven't even got a phone, never mind an app!

Agree with @Saucepanwarrior's compatriots about carpets being a bit minging.

Ha ha!, i would say:

Mail - shoes on - shoes off is far too European

Times - shoes off, neat boot rack by the back door, and boot brush

Sun - shoes on for the men, shoes off and pink fluffy heeled slippers for the ladies

Guardian - shoes off, mahabis on (or barefoot), but won’t demand it of others - people can express how they want to display their feet how they wish

Express - either on or off, depending on what they think Diana would have done
