I know the days of cheap accommodation in this country has long gone, but Christ, I can’t get over the cost of a travelodge.

It used to be our go to for a cheap weekend break away.
just back from a weekend in London. We went for a concert and added on a night.
we had booked ages ago and paid £140!for two nights.
I just looked for a weekend in September, and it’s £279 for two nights. It is central London, but even so😮

I’m not long back from a long weekend in a European city with a friend Paid £300pp for lovely central accommodation and flights.

To be fair, September isnt hugely far in advance and it is central London?

SexyLittleNosferatu · 27/07/2022 13:36

Definitely not unreasonable. They are extortionate now. They always used to be our cheap option but not anymore. I've had cheaper stays at the Hilton this year than at Travelodge.

orbitalcrisis · 27/07/2022 13:37

I've noticed that holiday inns are now usually cheaper than Travelodge and premiere inns, and they often have swimming pools and gyms!

Plumtreebob · 27/07/2022 13:38

They are so inconsistent as well. Some are perfectly good value and others are absolute dives. At least with Premier Inn the standard is much more consistent across different hotels.

WhiteFire · 27/07/2022 13:39

The further away you book the cheaper it is likely to be, also if anything is on in the area it can bump up the prices. The premier inns local to the NEC rocketed in price when Crufts was on.

Definitely. There are 2 in the city centre we visit a lot and we call one "Posh Travelodge" and the other "Rough Travelodge". Imaginative, I know.

Startuplife · 27/07/2022 13:45

We stayed in the one at London City Airport a few weeks back and paid about £150. I checked a few days before and it was almost £300!
I wouldn’t mind as it’s super convenient but we practically had to walk through a building site to get to our room!

We only have a “rough Travelodge” in my town 😁. I did stay in a nice one in Portsmouth however. It’s odd they don’t have brand consistency in the same way as Premier Inn.

TigerRag · 27/07/2022 13:47

Has anyone ever found their £29 rooms they keep advertising?

thetombliboo · 27/07/2022 13:53

I'm paying £400 for two nights in a travel lodge in Cardiff. It is game day on one of the nights but still 😭 shocking for a travel lodge.

Panatone · 27/07/2022 13:54

I’ve just looked up a travelodge and a hub by premier inn. They are both kings cross. We need an overnighter close to at pancreas for the Eurostar later in the year.
TL was £144. Premier inn £108.

Tell me about it!! I moved North at the end of last year, but still need to work in the office in the South 2 days a week, meaning an overnight stay.
When we moved, this was not an issue as the TL was no more than £40 a night - now I'm lucky if I can get it for less than £80!!

Panatone · 27/07/2022 14:00

@TigerRag Not for about 10 years

DD and I are having a weekend in London in September. We want a twin room and lots of the Premier Inn/Travelodge rooms either said it is a King size bed and a pull out single sofabed, or that they couldn't guarantee what it would be. As DD is 16 then we both deserve proper beds!

Looked at some independent places nearby which were cheaper and could guarantee twin beds...

AtLeastPretendToCare · 27/07/2022 14:08

OP just watch that the Premier inn Hub Kings Cross regular rooms are VERY small. Fine for one person for a late night arrival and early departure but wouldn’t pick for a break. On up side does have good air con, decent shower etc.

VapeVamp12 · 27/07/2022 14:09

I've been using booking.com and going to independent hotels. most recently paid £103 for an amazing room with a lovely golf course view on the outskirts of London. Travelodge and Premier Inn prices have gone crazy!

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 27/07/2022 14:11

@Panatone I've stayed at the hub at kings cross. It's tiny. But clean and does the job

ladyinwaiting99 · 27/07/2022 14:12

Are the central London ones affected by the train strikes?
When we visit London we'd always stay just outside where it was cheaper, then get the train in.
But if the trains are unreliable are people now competing over very central hotel rooms instead?

Facelikeanormer · 27/07/2022 14:14

Just booked a £30.99 night in Chichester Travelodge for November. Guessing it might be a "rough" version.

Ohthatsexciting · 27/07/2022 14:16

Looked this morning

central London (Southwark ) family room on 29th December £49!!!

Full English breakfast for £9.95 for all three (one adult and two children)

absolute bargain. Show me cheaper in central london. Or even the entire South of England

user1471517095 · 27/07/2022 15:22

The Travel Lodge in the centre of Scarborough is nearly always £120'ish a night. And it's not even nice. The 4 star round the corner isn't much more, and you get a breakfast.

Davyjones · 27/07/2022 15:24

I know. I used it to visit my mum but now it’s 400 for two nights and it’s just silly

Yabado · 27/07/2022 15:41

I’ve got 3 nights ( free cancellation ) at Westminster Park Plaza inc breakfast on the Aug bank holiday weekend £460 it’s a fab hotel right by the London eye
The premier inn and Travelodge was more expensive by about £100

IcedPurple · 27/07/2022 15:52

YANBU. I was also thinking about a short trip to London, mid-week, out of peak season, insofar as there is ever a 'low' season in London. Prices extortionate even for 'basic' hotels. I know London is famously expensive but still...

greatblueheron · 27/07/2022 15:52

Well, it's depressing, but society can't keep demanding everyone deserves a decent/living wage and then turn around and moan when the inevitable higher costs to run places is passed on. Not to mention, the service industry can't keep staff if they don't pay them more these days ... again, reflected in the prices.
