I know the days of cheap accommodation in this country has long gone, but Christ, I can’t get over the cost of a travelodge.

It used to be our go to for a cheap weekend break away.
just back from a weekend in London. We went for a concert and added on a night.
we had booked ages ago and paid £140!for two nights.
I just looked for a weekend in September, and it’s £279 for two nights. It is central London, but even so😮

I’m not long back from a long weekend in a European city with a friend Paid £300pp for lovely central accommodation and flights.

We have ditched the no frills hotels and now go to better quality chains. With breakfast added there is no price difference.

I was recently looking for a one night stay in Cardiff - no special events on or anything. I was looking at a travellodge outside the centre as closer to family- needed a family room for 4. I should have booked it when I saw it 6-8 weeks ago as it was £80 then. It's now gone up to £138 for the same night. Kicking myself.

Anyway - no harm done. I found a 2 bed apartment with kitchenette for £15 more. We'll buy a loaf of bread, 6 eggs and a pack of bacon: job done!

Froglett10 · 27/07/2022 22:17

Sorry, but yeah this is how much 'cheap' hotels cost in London. They've been this much for a while too, nothing new!

Panatone · 28/07/2022 10:32

Good to see that my experience is not unique! While you can still get ok prices for some parts of the country, I think the general consensus is that TL is no longer the cheap option!

Think I’ll try and book further in advance in future, and look at alternatives as well.

I definitely think it’s a great way to stay in decent accommodation for a sometimes laughably low price

One of the main arguments for brexit was to stop foreign workers coming in to undercut wages. The hospitality industry would have been one of the big areas affected by this. Higher wages = higher prices. We voted for this.

DashboardConfessional · 28/07/2022 22:55

Apart from once in something like an EasyHotel (small orange cube) I don't think I have paid under £100 for a room in London for 15 years.

Vast majority of travel lodge employees will be on statutory minimum wage.

No possibility of “undercutting”

YANBU. Rooms used to be £40-50 now looking at closer to £100

I’d say nearer £200 looking on the premier inn website for a one nights stay in London

Well, it's depressing, but society can't keep demanding everyone deserves a decent/living wage and then turn around and moan when the inevitable higher costs to run places is passed on. Not to mention, the service industry can't keep staff if they don't pay them more these days ... again, reflected in the prices.

Exactly this. People moan about not being paid a fair wage and they can't afford x, y and z but it doesn't seem to click that in order to pay them a higher wage it all gets passed back to the consumer anyhow!

Fipe · 20/07/2023 09:19

Not unreasonable at all. A 6 night stay in Travel lodge in Chichester £650!!!! A ridiculous price for a very basic room.

Caspianberg · 20/07/2023 09:28

Was £240 a night for family room premier in Waterloo recently.

romany4 · 20/07/2023 09:33

I totally agree with you.
DH and I used to stay regularly in Travelodge and Premier inn. The prices have become so ridiculous now.
I go on booking.com and find much nicer hotels usually with breakfast included for a much better price

They're still bringing in foreign workers. Only they're no longer European, or white, which I imagine that's something the average Brexit voter didn't foresee.

I stayed in a hotel in a remote and not very diverse part of the UK recently and many of the staff were African, going by their accents, they hadn't grown up in the UK.

I've also stayed in the Scarborough Travelodge. My lasting memory was the 4 am dawn chorus by the seagulls congregating in the ampitheatre that the buildings made, which also gave them the opportunity to shit all over the cars parked outside the hotel.

KimberleyClark · 20/07/2023 09:37

£35 per person per night doesn’t sound too bad to me.

TigerRag · 27/07/2022 13:47

Has anyone ever found their £29 rooms they keep advertising?

I book hotels for my employees all the time and have NEVER come across a £29 room!

To be fair Travelodge is normally my last resort unless it's a new site.

FanFanFanFanYam · 20/07/2023 09:43

Agree about consistency. Premier Inn are pretty much standard across the board, whereas some Travelodges are absolute dumps, and some fine. Hard to know what you’re going to end up with.

allthewaytobeanotown · 20/07/2023 09:52

Leigh Delamere services Travelodge always used to be in the £29 deal.

Used to take my kids on holiday there on the way to Devon 🤣

BarbaraofSeville · 20/07/2023 09:53

Some of the Travelodges have been refurbished, so they're obviously much better. If it doesn't say anything on the page for the hotel about it being the new design, it's likely to be a Shit Travelodge.

For the £29 rooms, they're probably available on an industrial estate outside Barnsley, in November.

BashfulClam · 20/07/2023 09:59

Premier inn is the same. We stayed in one at this time the last few years but it’s now double the price. I refuse to pay twice as much as previously.

Iloveanicegarden · 20/07/2023 10:06

@Facelikeanormer Watch out for the parking there. It is available but hard to find. Rooms basic and can be noisy out the back (night noise up till midnight)

DinnaeFashYersel · 20/07/2023 10:23

Central London is mega bucks no matter where you stay.

Try somewhere a few tube stops out from the centre. You will save a fortune.
