DC refusing to pay board

My teenager has been offered a well paid job (over £20k) and refusing to pay board of £15/wk. What is reasonable?

Give him a Section 21.

hatedbythedailymail22 · 26/07/2022 21:04

Charge 150 a week. That's more reasonable.

bangersandsmashhh · 26/07/2022 21:04

thats fine they can move out as it’s clearly cheaper

Winterfellismyhome · 26/07/2022 21:05

£15 a week?! Hes getting an absolute bargain. Yanbu

CoffeeBeansGalore · 26/07/2022 21:06

20% of take home pay is generous on your side. Or they move out.

BornIn78 · 26/07/2022 21:07

Give them 4 weeks notice to move out. See if they can find somewhere else to live for £15 a week.

RandomMess · 26/07/2022 21:07

Tell they pay or leave.

My refuser soon coughed up when she looked at the alternative properly.

Bonbon21 · 26/07/2022 21:08

One fifth of his take home pay or he moves out.
He is in the grown up world doing a grown up job for a grown up wage... treat him like one.
If he objects he can go look for a better deal elsewherw..
Hope he already does his own laundry and helps with cooking, shopping and the rest of the household chores!!

Rainbowqueeen · 26/07/2022 21:10

Charge market rent with a 20 percent discount

House rules about cleaning and contributions to meals etc

They can find a share house if they would prefer

Biker47 · 26/07/2022 21:10

Waiting for the mumsnet apologists to appear in the thread and say charging your own child anything at all is disgusting, lol.

Tell them it's now £30 a week for refusing your pretty fucking generous opening offer.

Pixiedust878 · 26/07/2022 21:11

Wow £15 a week, you can’t even stay on a campsite for that.

Put your price up and tell them to look at local rental prices.

Showmethefood · 26/07/2022 21:11

Agreed. Pay board or move out.

Darbs76 · 26/07/2022 21:12

Tell him where he door is. £15 a week?!

Ciela · 26/07/2022 21:12

£15 a week is cheap. When I moved out of my parents house in 2017 I was paying £75 a week and earning around £16,500.

I think your teenager needs to start realising how much private rent would be if they moved out. Then add in the bills and see how much they would be left with then.

Mum2jenny · 26/07/2022 21:14

At least £80 per week, absolute minimum!

NowYouTellMe · 26/07/2022 21:14

They’re saving for a mortgage deposit so anything paid in rent makes that more difficult to achieve

Twizbe · 26/07/2022 21:14

They pay board or they move out - simples

That's life mate.

Take your stupidly cheap rent or they can pay way more rent elsewhere

NowYouTellMe · 26/07/2022 21:15

Also have a car with all related costs

So you take the money and bank it and you can gift it back when they show you some respect
I’d say £100 a week excluding food and treats

caringcarer · 26/07/2022 21:17

When you say teenager are they still in education or left school and in full time employment? I would not charge a teen who was still in education but had a job as well but would charge if had left education and working full time.

Lagertha6 · 26/07/2022 21:17

I used to pay £25 per week. Tell them to naff off

NowYouTellMe · 26/07/2022 21:18

I think it’s naivety rather than spite. It’s a young age to be offered such a generous salary and, straight out of school, it must be a lot to process

OP posts:
comealongponds · 26/07/2022 21:19

£15 quid a week is nothing, he’s being an entitled dick. Yes he’s saving for a mortgage but he still needs to contribute to the cost of housing him. £60 a month is a tiny amount £60 a week would be more reasonable!

tell him to move out and find somewhere else for cheaper if he doesn’t like it

£15/wk is a token amount.

Present them with an itemised bill covering share of mortgage/rent, utilities, council tax, insurance, food etc.

Might give them a wake up call as to how much living actually costs.
