Just that; my like-for-like £64 basket is almost £10 cheaper at Ocado! I’m shocked

I went to Aldi the other day. Yes, some things were obviously cheaper, but I was surprised how many things weren’t. Eg. Box of 15 eggs, £21.99 in Aldi and £2 in Ocado. Also, I’m sure pack of five cookies cost more than Tesco.

Riverlee · 26/07/2022 20:06

Sorry, £1.99

Work2live · 26/07/2022 20:08

That genuinely does surprise me! What sort of stuff have you bought??

I was quite surprised when a few weeks ago I did a like for like online shop which came in £6 cheaper from Sainsburys than Asda (including delivery).

Lovemusic33 · 26/07/2022 20:08

I shop with Ocado but a couple of weeks ago I thought I would do my shop in Lidl. I usually spend £80 in Ocado (me and 2 older teens), my Lidl shop came to £90 and the quality was way off compared to Ocado. I have gone back to Ocado. I think if you buy Ocado own brand of fruit, veg, meat etc… it’s not that pricey, I only buy the M&S food if on offer (this week I bought a whole bbq chicken on offer).

KatherineJaneway · 26/07/2022 20:08

In my experience this is not true.

HappyHappyHermit · 26/07/2022 20:10

Me too, I find Ocado extortionate, but then I only buy own brands so maybe it's that.

NowYouTellMe · 26/07/2022 20:10

I’m cross now that I didn’t ‘checkout’ my 2nd order in time to takes advantage of their ‘second shop’ voucher but I’ll still be saving money compared to Tesco, especially with the free delivery slots....why is that even a thing?

luxxlisbon · 26/07/2022 20:12

Some own brand Ocado things are actually good value.
However I rotate between Asda/Tesco and Ocado and the Ocado delivery is always more.

OnTheBoardwalk · 26/07/2022 20:13

I've noticed there are a lot of offers at Ocado recently and cheap prices

i've been struggling to do my mothers £40 min standard shop. Month or so ago it was easy topping £50

Nat6999 · 26/07/2022 20:15

I don't find Ocado any more expensive than Sainsbury's even though prices have increased slightly since they went in with
M & S. Waitrose is extortionate & their fresh food isn't the best quality wise.

Sorry, £1.99

Blimey, I nearly passed out then. 🥴 £21.99 for eggs and they're not even chocolate! 😄

NowYouTellMe · 26/07/2022 20:24

Lazy and indulgent stuff such as wine and ready meals included which is why I was so surprised!

luxxlisbon · 26/07/2022 20:25

Interested to see a screenshot of the baskets for comparison.

OakTreex · 26/07/2022 20:28

Not sure on this as never really use Ocado. But I was shocked at Lidl the other day - so expensive! Some stuff double what I pay in Aldi. Haven't been back

RedWingBoots · 26/07/2022 20:30

I would love to see what is in your basket.

What the supermarkets rely on is that you do your entire shop of similar products in that supermarket.

However if you are like me and live in an area of London with lots of supermarkets within walking distance, it is easy to write a shopping list for particular bits and know what to get from where.

I actually think it's less surprising if it's indulgent stuff, especially depending on what is being counted as the 'like' for the 'like'. I think you could spend as much in Tesco as at Ocado if you picked a lot of the most expensive stuff in Tesco. It's the other way round that I don't think is possible, if you did the cheapest shop you could in Tesco then I would be astonished if you could match it with Ocado.

I found that Aldi normally sells smaller packets of fresh stuff than Lidl and Asda.

SortingOffice · 26/07/2022 20:35

Branded stuff?
I've never found anything cheaper at Ocado. I use it once in a while when I want to stock up on m& s foods and do a regular shop at the same time. Absolutely every item is dearer than my usual at Tescos

6! Bottles of wine, 1.5kg lasagne, cannelloni, ravioli, cauliflower, asparagus, hot dogs, pasta sauce, crisp baked x4, premium tinned toms x4, beg moussaka, Tropicana, ham, sausage meat & brownies

I've just done a like for like and Ocado works out £20 more expensive than Tesco! Nothing fancy or extravagant on there either. 😱

CallmeMrsPricklepants · 26/07/2022 20:46

I've switched from ocado to Tesco because I was finding ocado ridiculous, we easily get twice as much at Tesco. Ocado also stopped doing most of the items we use and are awful for veg, if you want 1 courgette you have no choice but it buy 3. Huge ranges have disappeared, most weeks they'd not have what we wanted in stock or it said in stock and theyd substitute it.

OnTheBoardwalk · 26/07/2022 21:01

Lurpak 500g slight salted (everyone’s cost of living reference point) on offer Ocado £4. Tesco and Aldi price match £4.49

Hardly a weekly shop, more a small assortment of random items!

That's not the case. Lidl is the cheapest supermarket of all. inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyle/money/bills/most-affordable-supermarkets-revealed-lidl-found-to-be-cheapest-shop-for-a-basket-of-groceries-in-april-1609795

I use Ocado for some things and Lidl for the bulk. Tesco is extortionate round here (London).

Dixiechickonhols · 26/07/2022 21:24

I use Aldi and Lidl but have an Ocado shop sometimes. They have really good bundle offers. The basics are comparable price to other supermarkets. Lots in 50% flash sale especially if you amend basket just before cut off.
