CF Tourists - is it worse ??

We have just got back from a few days in Cornwall - we live in Devon, so spend a lot of time in both counties and are very used to tourists and holiday makers. We stayed in a 'pub with rooms on the beach, which was lovely. However - I am utterly gobsmacked by the level of CF we have witnessed in the 3 days. It feels like peoples entitlement is off the scale. I don't know how those in hospitality are dealing with it.

Wednesday - Woman went mental at the poor young lad serving in the beer garden - insisted she had booked a table outside. Very politely told her that they do not take reservations for the garden, just the restaurant. Screaming ' Are you calling me a liar'. He went in, and didn't come back out.

Friday AM - they serve breakfast for guests 8am-9.30am, then open for breakfast at 9.30am (lots of signs saying open at 9.30am). At 8.30am a group were outside - rattling the door. Member of staff opens the door, and lets them know they open at 9.30am. Lots of moaning - insisting they can have breakfast now etc. She says no - very polite. So he tells her it is disgusting that they allow guests to sit in the window eating when others can't ! ( and to make up for their error, they should serve them breakfast too)

Friday evening - Family of 6 rocked up - no space in the beer garden. Started shouting - so the owner came out. Man very angry - they had driven for 6 hours - and the kids needed feeding. The owner was great - polite but firm. The man actually suggested the owner walk around the beer garden and checked when people were leaving so they could secure a table. He said no. A lot of swearing. Asked to leave.

Drive home Saturday morning. Along a winding road along the coast - car in front just stops. Man gets out and stands looking at the sea. Single lane - so I cant go around him. After a few moments I beep - he stomps over to my car and says 'Can I help you' ... I say you have blocked the road - could you move please. To which he responds 'I am looking at the view - maybe you could just be kind' FFS !!!

I know someone whose work bag was blown up - boss not happy !

DameHelena · 27/07/2022 17:45

I think some people have forgotten how to behave since the curtailment of travel/mingling with others over the pandemic.
OP, I hope you gave that man a cheery wave while eating your 'unfair' breakfast in the window Grin

A few weeks ago, my husband and I were having dinner in our local town (Bath). We were sat outside eating, on a table, in the middle of a row of 5 tables. One end tables was being used, us in the middle, the rest empty.
A large group of tourists arrived, shuffled and mooched@ about, then one of the group approached and said it would be polite of us to move (midway through eating) to the end tables (full of empty glasses and plates) so they could all sit together.

My husband pointed at his dinner and said I'm eating, no.
The guy got irate and called us selfish, my (very large)husband calmly stood up, and asked if he had been swimming in the River Avon pointed at it, and that if he doesn't adjust his attitude quickly, he may just find himself doing just that.

They sat either side of us waiting for us to finish and leave. We really enjoyed the following dessert, coffee and drinks.....

Perhaps this is very niche but at some point in my childhood it was drilled into me that an abandoned backpack should be assumed to be a bomb until proven otherwise, and consequently I can never leave a bag anywhere.

Yes! Me too. My friend's school bag got blown up when we left it in WH Smith.

Moll2020 · 27/07/2022 17:59

I live in a popular holiday resort and have seen some unbelievable behaviour but the one i can’t stand are the dirty b’stds who shit in the local park and leave a pile of toilet paper next to it. FFS it’s disgusting.

Danielle9891 · 27/07/2022 18:07

I don't think people realise how waitresses are treated by a select few. I'm a waitress in a small tourists village in Ireland and I've had people grab my elbow as I've walked past, click their fingers and point at a empty glass (I think he wanted it refilled) throw chips at me when I asked if everything was ok, throw a menu at me as we ran out of sausage rolls, hold their hand up to silence me but you get used to it after a while. The other 99% of people are great and it's really nice to talk to them and learn about where they are from and how their holiday is going. Its a hard job especially as I work split shifts 11-1pm the 5-9pm ect and have to commute to work and back but I alway treat everyone nice as you never know what is going on in their life.

Ortega888 · 27/07/2022 18:11

Sadly there’s way too many rude, ignorant bat shit crazy entitled CFS out there. I have seen it and heard it all. 😂🤣😢

fatimashortbread · 27/07/2022 18:21

To be fair - none of my family own wellies just walking boots - so would always think the two interchangeable. Can you hire wellies at your venue?

Justoneconfusedperson · 27/07/2022 18:33

ive worked in some sort of customer service my whole life. CF’s and downright vile are a daily occurrence. I now work customer service remotely on the phone and today alone I’ve spent a solid 4 hours of my shift on calls being shouted at. Customers in general can be very very unpleasant people!

janj2301 · 27/07/2022 18:33

I love that the owners told the CFs to get lost. Read loads of American restaurant stories where someone complains and they get seated immediately, free meals and the waiting staff are fired!

restingbitchface30 · 27/07/2022 18:35

Don’t work in hospitality but I am a retail manager. People are the pits. But I really don’t tolerate it at all. I am changing careers because I can’t hack it anymore

PearlyShamps · 27/07/2022 18:37

These are not just CFs, they are CCs. The World is full of 'em.

Very sad. Just try to rise above it and keep being lovely, and kind x

Yes that was also the case for me, but we're talking about a small shop - the staff would know it was yours. If you left it lying around a large supermarket it would be different.

I think my favourite bit is the breakfast CFs - they shouldn’t let people sit in the window and eat if outside customers can’t come in to eat yet 🤣🤣

My favourite too 😂 comedy gold that one😁

My goodness, the entitlement of some of these people is truly breath taking. Who DO they think they are? 🙄

I would never leave a rucksack outside, it would be stolen.
If I can't go in a shop with it on my back, I just do not go in. Too much like hard work otherwise.
But I am not sure will ever do this kind of holiday again anyway.

I meant indoors by the door. (Obviously outside it might be stolen although if it's so big a rucksack it would be difficult to run away with anyway and I am also assuming that there aren't high crime rates in the sorts of villages that still have small village shops).

The point is you can't justify whacking into people and objects because you don't want to take your rucksack off.

gatehouseoffleet · 27/07/2022 18:45

high crime rates

So we’ve had a few more on holiday (although most people are lovely and polite and don’t cause drama).

We went to a waterpark this morning, had a lovely time, sadly a family kicked off as we were entering because they couldn’t bring alcohol in, they were quite aggressive. I mean supervising children in water when you’re drunk isn’t stupid at all.

We were in a bar last night watching the football, so a bit rowdy, but virtually everyone just normal and nice, this was a Spanish bar, not a Brit themed bar, so the football commentary was obviously in Spanish. One couple were moaning about “all these fucking spanish” I mean, finding Spanish people in Spain is quite shocking. If you don’t like Spanish people or the Spanish language why are you in Spain?!!!!! They’re probably the first people to kick off if they hear someone in the UK not speaking English.

DH was queuing for a flight from Dublin. Lovely irish man offering those with oversized bags opportunity to put them in the hold free of charge. Family in front refused insisting they were taking all of their clearly oversized bags on the flight. Three times he went back and offered - they refused quite rudely. Got to Board told the same so then either had to pay over £200 because of them not being booked or miss their flight. Serves them right as DH said their sense of entitlement and rudeness to the official was embarrassing to witness.

I used to live on the Isle of Wight for many years and hand on heart the tourists were all pretty decent.
people are definitely getting more entitled generally though, including my own children compared to my generation.

Not a UK one but back in 2020 I managed a getaway to Northern Italy in that brief time where the Covid threat receded in September. We were going over a mountain pass in the Dolomite mountains - busy traffic, very steep, and back to back hairpin bends. There were several carparks and even informal stopping places if people wished to stop and admire the view. We were following a regular rural bus going up a particularly steep area - the bus was struggling a bit doing hillstarts on the hairpins.

Then suddenly enter CFs - they were driving down and without warning pulled into the middle of the road (causing uphill bus to perform emergency stop), then they stopped in the middle of the hairpin, blocking traffic in both directions, and started filming the views and taking selfies! We were gobsmacked at the sheer CF-kery of this. There was a huge blasting of horns in both directions, a mass of interesting oaths in Italian and German as well as hand gestures especially from the bus driver. However the car occupants gave absolutely no fucks and blocked the road for several minutes!

I went on a daytrip to the IoW during Covid (most exciting day we'd had for months and months--it was lovely) and I thought then that most of the families were considerate. They came from all kinds of backgrounds but just seemed to want to enjoy themselves without stopping anyone else from enjoying themselves.

I think what Spain, France and Greece have been spared.....Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Sussex will be suffering with. There are a lot of very entitled Brits, we lived in France and it was deeply embarrassing to share a nationality with people who shout loudly to make themselves understood and then comment that the 'frogs' are thick. I do wonder where this mentality comes from...clearly they were not keen students of history.
