CF Tourists - is it worse ??

We have just got back from a few days in Cornwall - we live in Devon, so spend a lot of time in both counties and are very used to tourists and holiday makers. We stayed in a 'pub with rooms on the beach, which was lovely. However - I am utterly gobsmacked by the level of CF we have witnessed in the 3 days. It feels like peoples entitlement is off the scale. I don't know how those in hospitality are dealing with it.

Wednesday - Woman went mental at the poor young lad serving in the beer garden - insisted she had booked a table outside. Very politely told her that they do not take reservations for the garden, just the restaurant. Screaming ' Are you calling me a liar'. He went in, and didn't come back out.

Friday AM - they serve breakfast for guests 8am-9.30am, then open for breakfast at 9.30am (lots of signs saying open at 9.30am). At 8.30am a group were outside - rattling the door. Member of staff opens the door, and lets them know they open at 9.30am. Lots of moaning - insisting they can have breakfast now etc. She says no - very polite. So he tells her it is disgusting that they allow guests to sit in the window eating when others can't ! ( and to make up for their error, they should serve them breakfast too)

Friday evening - Family of 6 rocked up - no space in the beer garden. Started shouting - so the owner came out. Man very angry - they had driven for 6 hours - and the kids needed feeding. The owner was great - polite but firm. The man actually suggested the owner walk around the beer garden and checked when people were leaving so they could secure a table. He said no. A lot of swearing. Asked to leave.

Drive home Saturday morning. Along a winding road along the coast - car in front just stops. Man gets out and stands looking at the sea. Single lane - so I cant go around him. After a few moments I beep - he stomps over to my car and says 'Can I help you' ... I say you have blocked the road - could you move please. To which he responds 'I am looking at the view - maybe you could just be kind' FFS !!!

Physically not possible? Lots of people manage it.

Wearing big backpacks is not just compatible with cramped spaces. It's polite to take it off if you're going into a train / small shop.

Taller people manage it I agree.
You have to be tall enough to fit the backpack in between your legs. I am short. An ordinary-sized travelling backpack, not a mega one, comes up to my waist. It is physically not possible to fit it in between my legs without putting it lengthways and taking up way more floor space. That is why I used to keep it on my back if space was tight, or take it off and put it on the floor of space was not tight. The backpack takes up more space off my back and propped up on the floor.

threesortsofjam · 27/07/2022 11:53

The worst backpack 'crime' on the tube is where the wearer only has the backpack secured by one strap, meaning it could fall onto another passenger. In my opinion anyway.

There was no passing place and his tractor was HUGE - I won't be pressured into driving what I consider dangerously just to save a few minutes on the persons behind - local and working or not.

antelopevalley · 27/07/2022 12:20

15 miles per hour is very very slow. This is the kind of speed levels that the police could give you a ticket for.
I would suggest some refresher driving lessons.

palygold · 27/07/2022 12:21

I understand why you drove at the speed you did. It was unfamiliar to you, and I think the other driver definitely shouldn't have called you a cunt! But I agree that 15mph was probably too slow and a danger in itself.

There are roads where 15 is quite fast with no visibility and single track

Rare in Suffolk mind you

Coming back to London from Lowestoft once following my sat nav I found myself down a small windy narrow county lane, driving down which I wanted to be careful, you know maybe had walkers and cyclists and oncoming traffic. A huge tractor spent the best part of 5 minutes intimidating me coming within a hair breath of my bumper and revving his engine and when we finally parted ways called me a cunt. It's not always one way.

This is my village. You should have pulled in then followed the tractor. Farmer would have known you were a tourist from this idiotic behaviour.

The police don't patrol country lanes 😂😂

midgetastic · 27/07/2022 12:44

There are roads where that could be too fast you know

Stopping distance 10 m
Blind bend at 20m distance
Only one lane - then if a car comes round and you are goi g a bit faster as crash is guaranteed

As a country mouse I love visiting cities. I chat to taxi drivers restaurant staff, say thank you, leave tips. I think I probably stand out like a sore thumb reading this thread. BUT as someone upthread said at home we're all known and our cards would soon be marked if we were unpleasant

I was reminded of this thread today at a National Trust property. A middle aged, male customer was loudly berating a young, female member of staff (she looked about 18) because the house is shut on Wednesdays. Like it's her fault.

I mention the ages and genders because I think it's relevant to his behaviour.

This is totally relevant.

An abuse of a power dynamic and a discharge / projection of rage that would not have been inflicted on an older male colleague.

I think we all need to intervene and call stuff out - calmly - to stop escalation and check bad behavior

My very local beach. I've stopped going there in the Summer on a weekend. We used to go swimming every few days. It's been awful the last couple of years. I was talking to the ladies in the Cafe, and they were saying some people have been trying to do a runner without paying too. :(

😡 I love that cafe everyone is so nice

Sideorderofchips · 27/07/2022 13:00

Ah Jersey from April till October

Tourists complaining if its raining (we can't control that)
Complaining they can't use a hotel pool for an hour because of swimming lessons
Complaining about lack of parking
Complaining about lots of people on the beach (yes there are alot of you and there's alot of us that like to use the beach too)
Complaining about prices (yes cost of living is very high here)
Complaining about the max speed limit being 40mph and green lanes being 15mph(then being too afraid to drive over 10mph anywhere because the roads are very narrow)

I worked in hospitality over here and would never go back to it.

It's a shame because on the whole most tourists are lovely!

daretodenim · 27/07/2022 13:02

I lived in a tourist village in the Central Highlands 35-40 years ago. Even then it was a nightmare during the summer months when we had to drive to the big town an hour away to go to the (closest) supermarket. Well, it was normally an hour away. You had the "Sunday drivers" every day of the week who were either scared of the bends in the road, or driving slowly - very slowly - to see the views. Extra dangerous because you didn't know they were around a bend until you nearly rammed into their back. And then there were "the caravans". They were doing the same, only they were also slightly on the other side of the road making it extremely dangerous to even attempt to overtake them. Then there were the tourist coach drivers who seemed to think that anybody else on the roads simply shouldn't be. Especially if you were coming in the other direction while they went around a blind bend too fast and didn't bother to slow down to stay on their side of the road. Luckily all those roads have now been widened. And these issues were a large reason why.

And when the Caravan Club came for their annual stay at our village park the local kids couldn't use the play park because the CC kids and parents decided it was theirs and theirs alone. Local kids were verbally abused until they left.

We also had tourists driving up single track roads and parking in passing spots while they went hiking or had a picnic.

It seems the numbers of tourists has increased but the overall shitty behaviour of a significant minority remains. The trouble with serving the public is you never know whose the asshole until they're there. You don't get a warning that the next one is coming in 5 minutes.

I'm a bit of a coward I'm afraid so I didn't confront the man. However his wife wasn't impressed with him at all and I stayed to check that the staff member was OK. She said she was and thanked me.

We can moan about the tourist industry but here the businesses make the bulk of their income out of them which means they're open the rest of the year for the locals. We can walk with dogs on empty beaches eat in lovely cafés restaurant surrounding. These businesses wouldn't survive without tourists

vera99 · 27/07/2022 13:25

Well, that's me told drive dangerously (there was no passing place as the tractor was HUGE ) when on someone's else patch less you anger the locals. Could have been another family on bikes coming down the lane thinking it was all hunky dory in the wonderful bucolic Suffolk countryside on a trip out from the local farmers' overpriced camping yurt that I ploughed into. Sorry, clear message NOT WELCOME HERE!

People are moaning about CF/unpleasant tourists, not the industry itself. Plus lots of people/businesses live in tourist areas who don't rely on tourist income.

antelopevalley · 27/07/2022 14:05

And lots of locals would prefer useful shops, rather than twee gift shops and cafes selling cake and tea.
