CF Tourists - is it worse ??

We have just got back from a few days in Cornwall - we live in Devon, so spend a lot of time in both counties and are very used to tourists and holiday makers. We stayed in a 'pub with rooms on the beach, which was lovely. However - I am utterly gobsmacked by the level of CF we have witnessed in the 3 days. It feels like peoples entitlement is off the scale. I don't know how those in hospitality are dealing with it.

Wednesday - Woman went mental at the poor young lad serving in the beer garden - insisted she had booked a table outside. Very politely told her that they do not take reservations for the garden, just the restaurant. Screaming ' Are you calling me a liar'. He went in, and didn't come back out.

Friday AM - they serve breakfast for guests 8am-9.30am, then open for breakfast at 9.30am (lots of signs saying open at 9.30am). At 8.30am a group were outside - rattling the door. Member of staff opens the door, and lets them know they open at 9.30am. Lots of moaning - insisting they can have breakfast now etc. She says no - very polite. So he tells her it is disgusting that they allow guests to sit in the window eating when others can't ! ( and to make up for their error, they should serve them breakfast too)

Friday evening - Family of 6 rocked up - no space in the beer garden. Started shouting - so the owner came out. Man very angry - they had driven for 6 hours - and the kids needed feeding. The owner was great - polite but firm. The man actually suggested the owner walk around the beer garden and checked when people were leaving so they could secure a table. He said no. A lot of swearing. Asked to leave.

Drive home Saturday morning. Along a winding road along the coast - car in front just stops. Man gets out and stands looking at the sea. Single lane - so I cant go around him. After a few moments I beep - he stomps over to my car and says 'Can I help you' ... I say you have blocked the road - could you move please. To which he responds 'I am looking at the view - maybe you could just be kind' FFS !!!

I think that when people are paying for something, a cake, a drink, a holiday etc they see everything connected with that thing as part of the service they are paying for, whether that be staff, other customers, locals. It absolutely is a CF sense of entitlement. Compound that with instant Amazon delivery, home delivery, and the disconnection from our fellows and communities during COVID and it's turning into a bit of a shitstorm.

RockinHorseShit · 26/07/2022 16:49

As if right on cue for this thread I've just had a family of obvious tourists plonk themselves down for a rest on our windowsills, share food & drink. WTF does that on what is clearly someone's house Confused they then let toddler wipe sticky food all over the bottom of my windows whilst playing with my cats through the windows

& have just now had the brass nerve to knock on my door to tell me that their little boy wants to cuddle my cat, so I can let him as he's gentle

People in my town are rude & unfriendly because I said no & you can clean your kids mess up too

WTAF Confused

@ShrillSiren22 - tbh, if the kids round here were throwing themselves off the rocks (or, more likely, bridges) then I’d be telling them to stop
myself, but it’s the context isn’t it? We know what’s safe in our areas and we make the choices for ourselves. Tourists telling me how to parent, because they would do something different (or actually, because they’re not willing to say ‘no’ to their child so want me to say it to mine!)… nah!

SuperDoughnut "Surely it's like rats in a cage. Too many rats in this crowded world and we start fighting each other."

I do think a lot of the problem is overpopulation, everywhere, but people get ragey if you say that....!

EmmaH2022 · 26/07/2022 16:55

Rockin what did you say to that?

@OutDamnedSpot that reminds me of the tourists constantly, and I mean several times a day, watching local teenagers jumping off the rocks into the sea and either telling them off or calling the police/ coastguard 🙄. The local kids absolutely know where is safe to jump, many of the parents jump with them, the coastguard also know the spots where it’s absolutely fine and that kids have been doing it here for generations. There are even signs saying that there are no submerged rocks and that jumpers do so at their own risk in an attempt to stop people constantly phoning the coastguard but they never listen. There’s so little for kids to do around here and yet the tourists still think they know better than everyone else.

I see the point you are making, but how are the tourists to know the jumping children are local? We are being bombarded at the moment by water-safety campaigns which highlight how to call a coastguard, and it seems scarcely a day goes by in a heatwave where there isn't a tragic drowning accident. Is it better to have the coastguard called needlessly, or to ignore potentially risky behaviour that leads to a drowning?

LightDrizzle · 26/07/2022 16:59

*This poor woman tells a guy he needs more information on it so this cockney arse who thinks hes living in a guy Ritchie film gets in her face saying he would have to tell lies to fill it out more, repeating at the top of his voice 'I NEVER TELL LIES' over and over as if everybody in the place should be weeping out of respect for him.

I'm convinced everybody thinks they are in a film so does this over the top 'standing up for myself' thing because they think they'll look like Michael Caine in Get Carter. See also posting peaky blinders memes about them being silent but deadly.*

This made me smile and I think it’s true for quite a lot of the rude fuckers.

They do become ragey, but David Attenborough thinks so, and is a member of 'Population Matters'.

ShrillSiren22 · 26/07/2022 17:01

@Antarcticant because there’s almost always an adult, normally the local parkour or coasteering company rep with them wearing branded clothing. Tourists will still insist that they’re going to break their backs and phone the coastguard. Even when the kids are doing it off the marina wall which is about 6 foot high, clearly into deep water as directly in front of the RNLI office 🤦‍♀️

FatherJacksBrick · 26/07/2022 17:03

Makes me sad that people are abusing the NC500. I'd love to do it, but I'd love to do it respectfully! So much beauty and history to see and experience.

I do wonder if some people's mental health has been severely affected during lockdown. This rage for no good reason can be a sign of PTSD.

When you think about it, people were suddenly shut up with their immediate families, their freedom restricted, expected to work and take care of their kids, or to worry about where their money was coming from. People were dying, and they were expecting family and friends to become seriously ill and die.

No-one has addressed the stress people were under, or put anything in place to help them recover. On the contrary, they're expected to get back to normal immediately. Not everyone is coping with that.

I think some of it also comes from so many people living in overcrowded places. They are aggressive because they are hemmed in. Roads are crowded. Houses crammed together.

Yes, I supported them for a long time and it really underlined how much people don't care.

i also the Georgia Guidestones were probably trashed because of the declaration on numbers, but that's just my theory.

I was in the high road earlier and neighbour called it "depressingly quiet". It's still busier than ten years ago. Some people want the world to be an overpopulated hellhole? I remember a post on MN from a lady who said she'd seen lots of green fields from a plane and "why don't we build on that". The mind boggles.

Abra1d1 · 26/07/2022 17:06

Sorry, cross-posted with others making the same point.

Too many people crammed in to too few areas.

DramaticSunflower · 26/07/2022 17:08

These people always have a complex about being called a liar or stupid. Usually they are both. They usually think that everyone is looking down on them too. I wonder if they know they are CF or do they go through life believing everyone else is wrong?

FatherJacksBrick · 26/07/2022 17:12

Also, I live near to a very pretty and fairly touristy village and it makes me giggle how many people (usually twenty something women) just seem to wander around, getting their partners to take photos of them, check the photos, get them to take more and leave. They never seem to stop to take in any of the actual beauty of the area. It's all a giant prop. Sometimes there are actual queues of women waiting to get to the most popular spots.

Yes! Same here.

There are some spots where it’s perfectly safe to do it. There are even some companies who take people costeering in those spots.

We all know where it’s safe to go, the kids all grew up here knowing the safe places. There’s always someone shouting at the kids, or calling the police, or the RNLI or coastguard out.

They don’t listen when they’re politely told that it’s fine, get rude and abusive when someone tries to nicely explain that it’s ok then start huffing about rude locals and “kids today”.

It’s great that they show concern, but getting all aggressive and abusive because they think they know better is not ok.

"No! & clean your mess up" whilst pointing at my windows. Yes blunt, but they didn't seem to have any conception of them doing any wrong at all Confused

EmmaH2022 · 26/07/2022 17:21

Rockin good for you. I hope they did clean up.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 26/07/2022 17:33

I live in Somerset and do NHS home visits (medical). I stopped at the garage to buy some water as it was a really hot day.
This bloke standing next to his massive caravan asked me quite rudely to come over now and take a look at his wifes foot in an oi you kind of way and did I have any bandaging (sprained ankle apparently not emergency).
If he'd been nice and offered to buy me an ice cream I may have helped but as he was being so flipping rude I said he'd better go to A&E and wait 10 hours like everyone else.

FatBettyintheCoop · 26/07/2022 17:33

gatehouseoffleet · 26/07/2022 10:36

I still don't get it. Isn't it up to an adult whether they get wet feet?

I can see you'd advise wellies but why compulsory when it's so unlikely that people would have them with them?

How can you not ‘get it’? 🤦🏻‍♀️
Haven’t you heard of ‘no win, no fee’ lawyers? 😂

If an attraction requires the visitor to wade through water, it’s hardly surprising that in order to obtain public liability insurance, the attraction will need to risk assess and reduce the possibility of a customer suing them… when they slip in the deep puddle…

Antarcticant · 26/07/2022 17:34

because there’s almost always an adult, normally the local parkour or coasteering company rep with them wearing branded clothing

Branded clothing doesn't mean a lot these days, though. You see all sorts of people wearing branded clothing where it's unlikely they actually have anything to do with the brand - American Ivy League sailing clubs and so on. I've just had to google 'parkour' because I had no idea what it was!

Don't get me wrong, I am not sufficiently public-spirited to intervene where children unknown to me are doing risky things under the supervision of an adult - I'd leave them to it. But I wouldn't judge someone who was more caring than me for raising the alarm.

Blimey
I wouldn't enter a stranger's caravan even if they weren't a burly bloke.

This doesn’t surprise me. I recently saw photos a 20 something posted on Instagram of her walking around a small tourist village posing at various locations in ridiculous outfits. She must have been the talk of the town.

Just seen some of this in action myself, a shirtless father watching as his kids took a run up to kick geese in the park. You can imagine how that ended, I suspect the dad is still now looking for the geese manager.

also some utter weirdo yesterday, we were getting our CVs tarted up (for free) by professionals. This poor woman tells a guy he needs more information on it so this cockney arse who thinks hes living in a guy Ritchie film gets in her face saying he would have to tell lies to fill it out more, repeating at the top of his voice 'I NEVER TELL LIES' over and over as if everybody in the place should be weeping out of respect for him.
