Please help- dog advice

Im posting to see if anyone else has experience with this. Im 5 minutes from home and am going to call the vet as soon as I get in.

we took our dog to the beach today- she had great fun running about and swimming in the sea. There were lots of jelly fish which the tide had brought in but she never usually goes near them. Tonight she was trying to sniff them but she didn’t eat any (I’m 99% sure she didn’t, I had my eyes on her at all times but she’s fast and loves to grab things and now I’m panicking she ate a bit without me seeing)

she suddenly got quite hysterical and was frantically and I mean frantically trying to eat sand, seaweed and anything else she could. A few minutes later she projectile vomited green stuff all over the sand. I think she must have eaten seaweed- I didn’t see her eat any but she had it in her mouth and I managed to get her to drop most of it but she must have swallowed some). Since then she was sick twice and has been burping, frantically eating grass and sand, and she is completely hysterical.

shes been to the beach lots of times and never been like this, even when she accidentally swallowed seawater from swimming. I’m so worried she accidentally ate some seaweed (Google said it’s really toxic) or even a bit of jellyfish.

as I said, I’m going to call the vet once we get in, but I just posted while we’re being driven home to see if anyone had any experience or knowledge. I’m a bit of a worrier so I really hope I’m just worrying and getting myself into a panic about nothing and it’s just a simple upset tummy but I’ll phone the vet once we get in. We’re not first time dog owners and have dealt with sick dogs before but I’ve never seen something so quickly like this.

any help or reassurance or advice would be really appreciated x

Oh god, that sounds awful 😞 I don’t have any advice, sorry, but hopefully someone will be along so who can help. Do you have access to 24hr vet advice through your pet insurance that you could call now before you get home?

SirChenjins · 24/07/2022 21:13

Ps - I hope she’s feeling a bit better soon

Bananarama21 · 24/07/2022 21:14

She could have been stung by the jellyfish..I'd get her to the emergency vet as soon as possible.

RogueRebel · 24/07/2022 21:15

Is it possible she has ingested any sea water? Salt water poisoning can cause vomiting

Theluggage15 · 24/07/2022 21:15

Sounds horrible. Could have some seaweed stuck in her throat? Or maybe a bit of jellyfish stung her in mouth or throat. Good luck with the vet. Hope she’s ok.

If you can, phone the vet on route. They may need to travel into the practice, so calling them on your way could save some time.

IRememberXanadu · 24/07/2022 21:19

Why not ring the vet now?

Theluggage15 · 24/07/2022 21:20

Yes, as PP have said, phone vet now.

Wolfiefan · 24/07/2022 21:28

Good luck at the vet. Hoping for good news for you soon.

Grayhairscoming · 24/07/2022 21:36

My dog licked a jelly fish and instantly started to eat sand, throw up,although not green. It was horrible. If I remember right I gave her a antihistamine. She actually did it again a couple of years later🙄. Definitely phone the vets to have her checked out

Doghelpplease1 · 24/07/2022 23:11

Sorry I should have said- we were trying to phone but couldn’t get through as the line was busy. We headed for home so she could get some more water (we had brought water to the beach but she drank it all when she was being sick). The line was busy but we managed to get through just after I posted on here before getting home and the vets were so helpful, they said to bring her straight in. I’ve never seen her so unwell before and it was so frightening, she was hysterical and retching and shaking. She’s staying overnight.

everyone at the vet was so so lovely and kind, and I know she’s in the best place in case she gets more unwell during the night, but I miss her so much and it’s going to be the longest night without her. It’s such a quiet house and I keep going to get a toy out to play with her and she’s not here😥

I do hope you have good news from the vet today.

KangarooKenny · 25/07/2022 07:34

How is she today ?

IRememberXanadu · 25/07/2022 11:44

I hope she's well now.

Doghelpplease1 · 27/07/2022 20:14

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Just wanted to say that she thankfully got better at the vets and is absolutely fine now! Big relief ❤️

That’s great news.

Roodog · 28/07/2022 07:12

So pleased to hear that. Thank you for the update.

SirChenjins · 28/07/2022 08:39

That’s great news! You must be very relieved 😊

SarahSissions · 28/07/2022 10:24

Great news.

What you should be doing is driving directly to the vet not home whilst your dog is suffering.

Notanotherwindow · 28/07/2022 10:46

I always put mine in a basket muzzle at the beach as he is a hoover on legs. Typical labrador, if it fits in his mouth, he eats it.

I doubt she'll want to repeat the experience but might be for the best in future.

Maybe try reading the full thread before making such a nasty and untrue comment!
