Shocked at price of London hotel rooms?

I was thinking of organising a weekend away just for DP and me in London. But I am totally shocked at the price of hotel rooms. We would semi-regularly do this before the pandemic, but prices have soared since then. No way am I paying nearly £200 a night for a Travelodge room.

You could have a look at university rooms, they have some central London suites. If one of you is a Civil Servant you could stay at the Civil Service club in SW1, £240 for a weekend for two with breakfast and £98 for Sunday. Alternatively you could stay further out and travel in for sightseeing - Richmond, Hampton Court, Wimbledon, Kew, Chislehurst, Greenwich all have nice pubs with rooms / hotels and good restaurants.

Avoid the St Giles Hotel. Stayed there twice and both times it smelt of sewage

I have stayed there a few times and smelt nothing. In fact staying there this week. I will report back.

Another reason Premier Inn prices have risen is the investment into refurbishment over the past few years, still ongoing

St Giles hotel did not smell last week when I stayed there.
