Shocked at price of London hotel rooms?

antelopevalley · 23/07/2022 02:08

I was thinking of organising a weekend away just for DP and me in London. But I am totally shocked at the price of hotel rooms. We would semi-regularly do this before the pandemic, but prices have soared since then. No way am I paying nearly £200 a night for a Travelodge room.

St Katherine’s www.rfsk.org.uk

Also, try church guest houses and university guest houses. Always central, same service as other hotels but way cheaper and they would have paid off their buildings donkeys years ago and they still have a bit of a public service mission in their ethos.

Amber17 · 23/07/2022 09:35

I travel to London frequently and am used to paying £40 for a zone 2 Travelodge on a Sunday/Monday night. Now £110. The post pandemic summer price hike this year has been mental.

gogohmm · 23/07/2022 09:37

I agree, tried to book a hotel I've used many times pre pandemic including February 2020 and it's 3x the price for November

HMSSophia · 23/07/2022 09:38

It's a consequence of having (rightly) to pay staff more, the increase in all bills, and the loss of income over covid. What did you expect?

BunsyGirl · 23/07/2022 09:43

@HMSSophia given that inflation is running at around 10 per cent, I wouldn’t expect a 100 per cent increase (or more in some cases).

welshpolarbear · 23/07/2022 09:45

I recently went sun to weds, £540 for 3 nights in Blackfriars Prem Inn and I searched for ages. Booked 4 weeks in advance. Kept an eye on the price and it went up eve to week.

I was shocked that most of the nicer ones wanted £1200+ for 3 nights!!!

balalake · 23/07/2022 09:57

Think about having the weekend away in mid to late September. Daylight until early evening, weather usually good, everything open. I'd expect prices will be lower then.

BluOcty · 23/07/2022 10:23

It's well worth staying further out of the centre to get a cheaper room. When there's nothing on at the Excel centre in Docklands for example the rates are cheap. Lines like Jubilee and Victoria will get you into the centre in no time.

We stayed in the strand for 110 per night. Small room but had everything including a mini kitchen. Great location.

In the last month? Where if you don't mind me asking?

Inflation is PART of it. The rest is as I said - the need to pay more in salaries to get staff at all now, and to recover lost income from covid.

Try the Bedford hotel, Near Russell Square. It’s an ugly modern monstrosity but it’s comfortable and I stayed for about £100 recently.

Yes, and it's part of a group called Imperial Hotels, so if the Bedford doesn't have a good rate you might find some of their other hotels (all in the Bloomsbury area) do.

UncomfortableBadger · 23/07/2022 13:53

We had a fab time at the Lincoln Suites near Holborn a few weeks ago - near all the major theatres if you’re heading out for a play/musical. We paid around £160 per night but as it came with a kitchen and sitting area, it felt much better value than a basic Premier Inn room in the same area.

GreenClock · 23/07/2022 14:01

Another vote for Premier Inn Hub. But….Not suitable if you have young children or like to spend time chilling in your room (they’re very small rooms).

JulesJules · 23/07/2022 14:37

Was just coming on here to recommend Premier Inn Hub, and I see many others have too. Book in advance and compare rates from different locations/dates as this varies a lot. I've stayed in the one near Westminster Abbey and it was brilliant.

wateraddict · 23/07/2022 16:17

Snoozebox is a budget pop up hotel in the Olympic park, might be an acquired taste though!

Shivroyshair · 23/07/2022 16:19

Also second citizen M recommendation. My oldest teenagers loved it when they stayed there at the Tower Hill one. Was about £110 for a weekday night.

SocksAndTheCity · 23/07/2022 16:21

Yet another recommendation for Premier Inn hub. I stayed at the Brick Lane one for five nights over a Bank Holiday weekend for £235 with breakfast a few years ago - even if it's doubled that would still be pretty good.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/07/2022 16:23

The prices Travelodge are charging lately are obscene.

We've got 5 nights in Premier Inn Hub Kings Cross for about £550 but we booked it ages ago.

Borisisafecklesstoad · 23/07/2022 16:27

Weve stayed at ibis Gloucester road and always really rated it about 130 a night for family room . Best to call in person if you can

Morph22010 · 23/07/2022 16:30

I’ve got 3 nights in premier inn Wembley stadium next week for £280

Prices in many cases are double what they were two years ago.
Prices are high in September, that is when I was looking to go, not last minute.
It has to be a weekend and I do not want to stay far out or in a snoozebox. We did these weekends semi-regularly before covid and at expensive times of year stayed at a premier inn, and at cheaper times a nicer hotel.
It is supposed to be a nice time away. I do not want to pay high prices just for a premier inn.
I wonder who is paying these prices? Because it is so expensive.

I stopped at the Premier Inn Hub a couple of weeks back .. it was £95 for one night at a weekend, and it was when that big bike ride was on, and the weekend before the Jubilee .

Perfectly fine .. only gripe was that there was no kettle in the room. We also had a nice cooked breakfast in a pub round the corner

antelopevalley · 23/07/2022 18:28

@extra it is not that price now if I try and book for September. And it is very basic.

I was shocked at premier inn prices in london when I stayed there recently. They've really shot up since pre covid.
