... when people pack at the till?

Aldi is predicated on low costs, meaning a smaller number of staff, meaning fewer checkouts open, meaning the etiquette is for customers to haul ass through the checkout. There's a packing area to accommodate this!

Today I found myself and many others waiting whilst an individual decided to meticulously pack a shop which was presumably to feed the population of a small country. Even the member of staff at the checkout seemed a touch bewildered.

Yes, a first world problem. Am I just being impatient?

See I manage to pack it semi organised because I put it on the conveyer belt the way I want it to come off.
So I will literally put the heavy frozen together followed by lighter frozen stuff.
Same with the chilled I put raw meat together etc.
so my bags end up organised and quickly packed. I have the right number of bags open and ready too. I don't get how it's difficult???

The other ALD/ IDL sport is guess which till they're going to open up and get there asap.

😁

Yes I pack at the til too but use the open bags and lob everything in method. If you want to pack slowly at the till, use another supermarket it’s that simple!

I pack at the till too, but the lob in everything method will leave fruit crushed, yogurt burst open, sliced loaves mishapen. As I start to load put I in the cans, , bottles etc in first, then work up to heavy veg, fruit, more delicate stuff, finishing with eggs, crisps, frsh cakes, rasperries, etc.
Once scanned the items will come out in the same order- I have 3/4 bags and a cool bag if it is hot. Easy to put the bottles, cans, potatoes in sturdy bags first, then load up the more crushable items. Makes putting stuff away at home once you are back easier too.

if you are in ALDI you stick to their RULES

What rules?

If Aldi want to make rules, that's fine. But they have to tell people what they are, rather than assuming everyone receives divine revelation when they enter the shop.

If they don't want new customers they're perfectly welcome to put up signs saying so.

That’s the way I do it too - as you say, it’s not difficult and is very quick. If you put stuff onto the conveyor belt in order then you don’t have to faff about packing everything very carefully at the other end.

Maytodecember · 21/07/2022 18:21

I pack at the car, whatever the supermarket. Find it much quicker.

Now that gives me the rage. It's never the one nearest to me in the queue 😀

I do try to put stuff in bags, because I am old and have rheumatoid arthritis, I can't put it all in the trolley, get it all out again, pack in bags, then put bags back in the trolley, without running out of energy, and would be in too much pain to continue. I have mostly given up shopping in person and do online shopping and have deliveries instead. Occasionally I need to do a live shop, and just have to be impervious to the judgy stares and tuts of the impatient people behind me. You need a thick skin to be old and slow.

There are signs saying they don’t want new customers? Wow, that’s an odd business model.

I love packing at the till in Aldi or Lidl, I see it as a game to keep up with the cashier! I probably need to get out more ...

sunglassesonthetable · 21/07/2022 20:37

There are signs.

Honestly never noticed.

Too busy eyeing tills being opened up. Limbering up to chuck groceries into my bag.

The Aldi/idl Olympics

Lemoncurd · 21/07/2022 20:48

Gosh, I had no idea! Drove past a new Aldi a few days ago and children were excited to try it. We normally self scan into our bags as we shop. No baskets so went to the tills with each of us carrying a few items, a bit bewildered that there were really long queues and no express/self checkouts. I always take my own bag so popped it at the end of the till and put everything in as scanned. Nobody said anything so hope we weren't causing issues!! Haven't used a trolley anywhere in years and don't carry coins either (you had to pay for trolleys there) so couldn't use one.

Fairislefandango · 21/07/2022 20:52

They’re rabid. A shop has… omg… put up ‘signs’ so the Aldi zombies must obey.

People don't have to shop in Aldi! If they prefer snail pace they can go somewhere else.

comfortablyfrumpy · 21/07/2022 21:11

Oblomov22 · 21/07/2022 11:25

I always pack at the till. I line up my heavy stuff at the front of the conveyer, bread and crisps at the end. It's as quick for me to put it into bags, as it is to put into an empty trolley.

Same. Heavy stuff first, then cold/freezer, then the lighter stuff.
A designated bag for each ready in the trolley.
I never have a problem keeping up with the scanning.

sunglassesonthetable · 22/07/2022 10:13

Tbh I see all sorts in Aldi. Including people going quite slowly. They seem to be allowed.

In fact there was one giving OP the rage earlier.

SarahSissions · 22/07/2022 12:02

It wouldn’t even cross my mind that Aldi have different rules to other supermarkets. Proof that Aldi are the Illuminati 🐊
