Please somebody save me from clawing the very last bits of skin from my legs Shock

20-ish bites across both calves and feet. From Tuesday night. Very allergic, each one is now a raised welt around two inches in diameter. Itching to the point of distraction, I can't even think about anything else.

I'm on prescription Fenofexadine, and have tried every cream in the house, from aloe vera to calamine, hydrocortisone to antiseptic, eczema relief to after sun, and now prescription steroid cream.

Nothing helps, and I don't even know how to try and do anything else but itch, but have a full day of work and kids on holidays in front of me. I can't bear it!

Please please tell me some magic cures before I ruin my legs forever?

The hot spoon is a fucking miracle for me. I've tried everything as allergic and it works so well. Especially if get to them early. Needs to be repeated each time they itch.

A lot of people swear by Avon's skin so soft, apparently it's used by soldiers in bitey places and works a treat, a few friends use it successfully too*.

*disclaimer, it didn't work for me

This is good for prevention rather than relief. I say is - unfortunately the correct word is was. They changed the formula and few years back and is now useless unfortunately.

Eurax anti itch cream works miracles.

I remember this being a life saver when dc had chicken pox in hot weather so extra itchy

Fatballs · 21/07/2022 08:01

I react like this. I now take antihistamine tablets if I’m going to be spending a lot of time outside, plus repellent.

The tablets are the most effective itch remedy I have found, though I’m not sure if they work after being bitten. The clicker things did nothing for me.

Luckingfovely · 21/07/2022 08:03

So many great ideas - can't thank you all enough!

Working with what I've got in the house - and the hot spoon is helping! Still itchy, but definitely more bearable. I can breathe again!

Making a list of the other things I need to have in the house for the future.

And starting to feel a bit giddy on the antihistamines; going to be a fun day Grin

TCP - oddly I took it on holiday with me not expecting many mozzies, got bitten hugely and it really healed them up quickly.

etulosba · 21/07/2022 08:10

I’ve struggled to buy TCP recently.

I don’t use Skin so Soft but I have been told that it’s only the original "soft & fresh" dry oil body spray that works.

FrecklesMalone · 21/07/2022 08:19

If still itchy repeat the hot spoon as hot as you can without burning

Bobnotpop · 21/07/2022 08:24

Apparently Tiger Balm works well

Just bought this because I always get bitten to bits on holiday. Worth a try?

Snap, I bought it this week after being driven mad by several mosquito bites on my legs. It works!

It's the same theory as the hot spoon, but much easier.

Pharmacy for stronger hydrocortisone cream.....its the only thing thats makes a difference to mine if i don't get them with the zapper early..
Ceterizine/piriton as well as fexofenedine takes a bit of edge off

MissyB1 · 21/07/2022 08:27

I’m in Greece at the moment with some horrible bites (also very allergic to them). I was religiously putting on the highest strength Jungle Formula- and it didn’t bloody work!! I’m sure they must have changed it as it always worked in the past!

im treating the bites with hydrocortisone but it’s not great to be honest.

averythinline · 21/07/2022 08:29

Skin so soft made no difference to me..... would recommend Smidge ..
Or I'm 100 deet if further afield than Europe (melted plastic once though)

If heading to Europe get cream there much higher levels without prescription in pharmacy..

invinovvv · 21/07/2022 08:31

I got 65 bites in Brazil once on my legs (mosquitos love me!), couldn't sleep at all until I wet 2 towels in the shower and wrapped them around each leg. Fell asleep immediately, it was bliss!

faw2009 · 21/07/2022 08:36

I put plasters on my bites, it helps reduce itching and me from scratching!

We have this and it's an absolute life saver! I get covered in bites and tend to react really badly. This makes a hell of a difference. It's quite OUCHEY for the 3-6 seconds you put it on, and I do it a few times. Stops the bites itching at all for about half a day. Once they start itching a bit again I just do it a couple more times. Then repeat maybe once a day and they just get less and leas itchy. None of that maddening tearing your skin off.

Which is why I cannot recommend the Bite Away highly enough - genuinely an absolute game changer for me - it's a small ceramic disc that gets really really hot, but like you say you do need to repeat a few times a day / every few hours initially so this is super convenient as you can have it out and about with you at all times on holiday. I bought my mum and brother one, I would recommend to anyone who suffers from bites.

Got any chamomile tea bags? If so steep a few in a jug of boiling water. Get the whole thing fridge cold. Use the tea bags as cold compresses. Add some ice to the water and dip flannels in the tea and drape the flannels over your legs.

Helps with swelling and itching and really soothes the area. I promise!

Caminante · 21/07/2022 08:47

Hydrocortisone cream topically and antihistamines orally.
I deeply sympathise OP, I often get covered in bites. When I used to live in the US they would turn into these giant welts, looked and hideous.

Caspianberg · 21/07/2022 08:50

Bicarb paste. Literally better than all over chemical options

get regular bicarbonate soda from cooking aisle ( or your cupboard), add a bit of water to make a thick paste. Thicker better so it stays on.
paste on large blobs over bite.
sit on sofa for 30 mins with paste drying. You can’t move around much as will fall off as drying. Then rinse it all off. Repeat later if needed.

We get lots here in the Alps as mountainous and lakes. Some friends last year toddler had about 50 bites and tried over the counter stuff for 2 days with no help, the bi carb reduced all
swelling and itching within 30mins

weeder · 21/07/2022 08:57

The only thing that works for me is a gel called Fenistil. I usually buy it in pharmacies in Spain or France but also on Amazon. It’s about £6 for a small tube but you only need a small amount.

devonianBiatch · 21/07/2022 09:00

Go to your local health clinic/gp with your EHIC/GHOC/travel insurance and ask them got the mozzie jab. Every time I come to Greece I go right to the clinic and they give me a kenalog injection. Works like a charm to prevent any bites going to golf ball sizes. To reduce bites , Odomos cream is wonderful and what the Greeks use

Discovereads · 21/07/2022 09:03

Lots of great ideas. One thing not yet mentioned is swimming in the sea or a salt water pool. The saltwater relieves the itching like a balm from heaven. If you don’t rinse it off and just dry off, the relief can last for hours. I discovered this in Greece when I ended up with over 240 mosquito bites (I stopped counting at that point).

Glorieta · 21/07/2022 09:05

Dab neat lavender oil on each bite
Takes the itch away
Repeat several times per day.

Dodolovesme · 21/07/2022 09:30

Maybe you need something more heavy duty, but roll-on deodorant has always been the go-to in my family! Apparently my great gran discovered it!
