AIBU to think my neighbours should move their caravan?

Just wanted to start this by saying I know they are legally allowed to do so, but I just really needed to get this off my chest.

I bought a new house in Jan 21, its on a narrow residential street of terraced houses with no driveways. We knew parking was limited when we moved, but its not an issue since we only have 1 car and worst case scenario we could park it on the bottom of the road where there are no houses.
About 6 months ago, our neighbours opposite bought a large caravan. We get along with these neighbours, we let on to each other, take parcels in for each other etc. The man in the house works on his car a lot and I thought he was just working on the caravan and then would move it to the bottom of the road mentioned earlier. There are already a few motor homes and campervans parked there that belong to neighbours on the next street. But it's been there, parked infront of my windows for 6 months! Every morning I open my window to this beige caravan. Do I have to look at that for the rest of my time in this house?
The other issue is that now it's taking up the space of 2 and a half cars. Now most of the time its a race to get a place on the street and I usually miss out because I come back later.
AIBU to think its a little selfish to leave it there? I know there is nothing I can do and I don't want to cause any tension with my neighbours just needed to know if anyone else would feel the same?

Bloody eyesaw they shouldn't have it in view. Same goes for large vans!

Mosaic123 · 20/07/2022 15:31

I guess you could very gently ask how is going with the caravan renovation and when it's finished does he plan to park it down the road?

But it may not go well ......

courtrai · 20/07/2022 15:32

Some residential areas have covenants restricting parking of motor homes/caravans etc. might be worth checking your title deeds. I agree it's pretty antisocial. We have a camper and pay for secure storage partly for this reason partly because it doesn't do them any good to be exposed to the elements year round

aloris · 20/07/2022 15:33

This is an eyesore. Does your town have a regulation forbidding the parking of caravans on-street for more than a certain number of days?

Exactly where is my DH supposed to park his work van? Outside our house is safe and legal (especially when there's expensive equipment inside). People just cannot see past their own noses.

Puffalicious · 20/07/2022 15:36

And it's eyesore!

PurpleNebula84 · 20/07/2022 15:37

Is it parked on the road outside, unhitched? If so, then it can't be parked there, so he isn't legally entitled to leave it there. Speak to your local council - they can come and put a removal notice on it.

fashu · 20/07/2022 15:37

I don't mind vans, my dad has a work van although he parks it in a car park not outside his house. The issue with the caravan is it doesn't move, it's just there all the time! 😥

I nearly spelled it Isaw .....

RincewindsHat · 20/07/2022 15:39

I'd feel the same way and would bring it up with them. Especially if there's room down the street where there's no houses!

Hotenoughtoburnasausage · 20/07/2022 15:40

Ring the council op. Now.

JennyForeigner · 20/07/2022 15:40

That's definitely cheeky, on the they would presumably be pretty unhappy if you did it to them scale.

Apologies- I've got it wrong - it can be parked as long as there are no restrictions in force - their insurance company might not pay out if anything happens to it - still worth contacting the council in case they do have some enforceable bylaws about it 👍🏻

Deodrant · 20/07/2022 15:43

To be fair regarding vans, they do need somewhere to go proving;

Parking legally, not blocking traffic, and not causing a road hazard are some things you need to remember.

It's not always the case unfortunately although the same could be said for some cars.

fashu · 20/07/2022 15:43

I'm worried to say something because I don't want to have a bad relationship with my neighbours, it's a good suggestion to ask about the renovation but I think I've left it too long now. I'm just wondering if any other neighbours feel the same but don't want to bring it up in case they say I mentioned it 😕

Agree with above pp's, not entirely sure its legal to have it parked in a residential street. Ring the council

And the op can't see past her window. Even if they just moved it somewhere else for a while it would be a friendly gesture rather than having it there permanently. Personally I'd ask them to move it so that I can see out the windows like they can. Or failing that buy one yourself and park it outside their windows.

OhmygodDont · 20/07/2022 15:54

I feel for you at one point I swear we became a dpd depo with the amount of vans outside at the old house.

I thought caravans had to be attached to a car to be on the road but could be wrong. How annoying though.

Want2beme · 20/07/2022 15:56

Taken from - safeguard uk caravan laws

Can you park a caravan on the road?
Yes, it’s possible to park a caravan on the road, although the law isn’t always that clear on when it is and isn’t acceptable – it’s something of a grey area!

The main considerations from a legal point of view is that it doesn’t cause an obstruction, or it isn’t parked dangerously. If you do either of these things, your caravan will be judged to be parked illegally, and it will need to be housed elsewhere. If you do decide to park your caravan on the road, you’ll need to ensure that you do so as considerately as possible for the other residents in your street.

You must make sure you do the following:

Ensure that the caravan is lit at night
Park it with the nearside facing the pavement so the rear lights are at the rear and visible for approaching traffic
Is planning permission required to store caravans?
You don’t need planning permission to store a caravan in your garden or on your drive. However, you may need to secure planning permission if you keep it on your property anywhere other than these places.

In some instances, caravans parked on farmland may require different planning permission, as will caravans parked on a large piece of land that includes a protected nature area, even if you own the land.

If you are using a touring caravan as a completely self-sufficient home, and not as an extension of your current home, then you will need planning permission.

You'd think they'd be considerate enough to park it outside their own houseHmm

VeniVidiWeeWee · 20/07/2022 16:00

PPs only have to search "Is it legal to park a caravan on the road" to find out that, generally, it is.

Why post guesswork?

mum11970 · 20/07/2022 16:01

A caravan parked on a road needs to be parked the correct way round and must be lit at night.

Yanbu. We have a few people living in vans on our street that turn up all the time for a week or so. It really pisses me off. They use our bins, order take away and don't clear up and - the worst - they park straight outside my window blocking all the daylight. And it also means I can't park outside my house.

This turned into a rant but needless to say I feel your pain!

Vikinga · 20/07/2022 16:09

We aren't allowed to park caravans on our street or on our drives. And rightly so. My neighbour has a caravan and they store it in a dedicated place nearby. The least they could do is park it in front of their house and not your house though. That's bloody rude.

My neighbour asked that when my boyfriend comes he could park a bit further up as it was hard for them to get off their driveway. (He parks on my side but on the pavement opposite their drive. So now he parks a but further up no problem.

I think you can ask and see what they say. Surely they shouldn't mind parking at the bottom?
