AIBU to think my neighbours should move their caravan?

Just wanted to start this by saying I know they are legally allowed to do so, but I just really needed to get this off my chest.

I bought a new house in Jan 21, its on a narrow residential street of terraced houses with no driveways. We knew parking was limited when we moved, but its not an issue since we only have 1 car and worst case scenario we could park it on the bottom of the road where there are no houses.
About 6 months ago, our neighbours opposite bought a large caravan. We get along with these neighbours, we let on to each other, take parcels in for each other etc. The man in the house works on his car a lot and I thought he was just working on the caravan and then would move it to the bottom of the road mentioned earlier. There are already a few motor homes and campervans parked there that belong to neighbours on the next street. But it's been there, parked infront of my windows for 6 months! Every morning I open my window to this beige caravan. Do I have to look at that for the rest of my time in this house?
The other issue is that now it's taking up the space of 2 and a half cars. Now most of the time its a race to get a place on the street and I usually miss out because I come back later.
AIBU to think its a little selfish to leave it there? I know there is nothing I can do and I don't want to cause any tension with my neighbours just needed to know if anyone else would feel the same?

Maybe go straight to council. If you ask them and they so no, then you call council and they manage to get it removed, they'll know it's you who alerted council.

Sciurus83 · 20/07/2022 16:14

It's one of those things that's legal, but they must know it is an annoyance for you. A good neighbour would be considerate of that. I would absolutely say something about it. To be honest the relationship is already a bit tested, speaking isn't really going to make it worse when you're already annoyed with them.

zingally · 20/07/2022 16:25

Oh, I feel your pain!

I live in a flat, and each flat has one allocated parking space round the side of the block. But out the front, on the road, and some small pull-in areas, which are advertised as "visitor parking" and fit about 3 cars. Yet the neighbour above me, seems to like doing up cars incredibly slowly, letting their tax and MOT expire, and leaving them dumped in these pull-in areas.
I've taken to monitoring whether these cars have tax and MOTs on the DVLA website, and as SOON as one runs out, I report them. As they techically count as being "parked on the road", DVLA kicks up a stink. I recently reported the latest, which has neither, and yesterday the dad and his two sons were outside faffing around with the car for ages. I'm going to give it another week, and then report it to the local council as "abandoned". ;) There's a dirty "tide mark" round the base of the car, so it's clearly not moved for months.

I'd hate it too, would not want to look out on that forever , different if it's there for a couple of weeks while he works on it but not indefinitely

QuebecBagnet · 20/07/2022 16:37

I used to work with someone who had their caravan on the road and the council made them move it.

Exactly where is my DH supposed to park his work van? Outside our house is safe and legal (especially when there's expensive equipment inside). People just cannot see past their own noses.

It's when they get parked outside other peoples houses and left there for weeks on end that it becomes an issue..... dickhead neighbour I'm looking at you!!

I can sympathise with that! We park 2 cars and our camper van in our drive, so his work van is the only vehicle on the street, right outside our front window. The neighbours can hardly complain as DH is a plumbing and heating engineer and I've lost count the amount of neighbours he's helped in an emergency!

Unfortunately our neighbour isn't that kind and doesn't have a trade....it's used to transport equipment for his hobby.
He parked it outside our house for months when we had a newborn and he could see me struggling.

@Puffalicious

Work vans should be parked overnight in a work location or on your property if self employed. Blocking the light of your neighbours isn't fair. My dad was self employed and always had room for his van on the property

gogohmm · 20/07/2022 20:07

We aren't allowed commercial vehicles or caravans/campers at all on our development, there's only one space per house

JazzyBBG · 20/07/2022 20:08

Smash a window in the middle of the night... bet it soon gets moved 🤣

Takeitonthechin · 20/07/2022 20:15

Either check with the police on 101 to see if it's parked illegally or check your title deeds, if caravans are not allowed the local authority can take action to have it removed

mezlou84 · 24/01/2023 10:27

It must be lit at night if parked on the road and at least one wheel blocked from turning when not attached to a vehicle. Most councils take action on caravans parked outside peoples houses. I would contact your council and ask them if anything can be done they'll probably ask you to talk to them first though.

And what about people in terraced houses who have no drives or 'property' to park their work vans on? Are they not allowed to be self-employed or have vans?

I live on a terraced street where parking is a premium, I don't mind a van outside my window as they are generally used every day and so do move. However I also have a dickhead neighbour who has a campervan which has not moved for almost 10 months now, luckily it is not outside my window but I would be mightily pissed off if it was!

Or see through their own windows. We have the same issue with some prick parking outside constantly which takes away from being able to look out the window and seeing other than his van AND it blocks light getting in.

Hi all, as this post has come back to life lol, I will give an update. The caravan is still there and hasn't moved since the last update urgh.
Parking situation is getting worse and multiple times I'm stuck on the next road and have to carry my two kids in and then go back for any bags etc. I will definitely try and get in touch with the council.
It doesn't help that one of our neighbours decided to become an airbnb for work men and now we usually have 3+ vans all night.

I'd feel the same. My street is 90% caravan or van it seems. One family who moved last year 🎉 had a number of sons, all with vans, the dad had the biggest van (like the three bears but with vans). It was fun navigating around a corner with those things parks either side. Not. A neighbour drove into me because the van blocked her view. I'm not a van fan. I know not all people who own caravans and the likes are dicks, some are considerate.

Murdoch1949 · 25/01/2023 06:44

Can caravans be parked on roads? Didn't think that was allowed.
