Cockroaches and flying spiders AIBU?

We are in a pretty grubby, cramped Airbnb in New York with my husband and two children aged 12 and 16. We’ve had several cockroaches and yesterday a huge red flying spider in the bedroom. (Let’s not go into not being able to put any tissue at all ij the loo and having to put in a bucket provided instead. Or stains on the walls. Or…I could go on).
my husband and I have had a MAJOR falling out, I am refusing to stay here. He says it’s just nature in New York.
Am I being a snow flake and need to grow a pair or should we make like the wind and get the hell out of here? Is it normal to have cockroaches in Airbnb?
we are all pretty miserable but maybe I’m just not used to it and it’s going to be like it everywhere.

If it's normal or not I wouldn't be staying there

PavlovtheCat01 · 20/07/2022 13:00

That’s what I’m thinking. And I’m packing as we speak but it’s caused a huge rift between us
so I thought maybe I’m just too flakey and used to english bugs.

That is dirty, not nature 🤮 get yourself booked into a nice hotel!!

Hoppinggreen · 20/07/2022 13:09

Spiders cant fly
But if its dirty then yes, leave

LemonSunchine · 20/07/2022 13:14

Huge red flying spider Shock I wanna see a picture. I know a fair bit of NY is infested with roaches but still you don't want to meet them. Personally, I'd move.

HangOnToYourself · 20/07/2022 13:19

I just googled flying spiders 😭

Laliga518 · 20/07/2022 13:25

I would be more concerned about bed bugs 😕

It may not have been a spider. But it looked like a spider, and it buzzed around like flying. There was red on it, and it made a thwack into the lamp and then the wall as it buzzed over our faces. I can say I did not give it a close inspection. I screamed at my husband to get it the f out, while my daughter freaked. I ignored the first roach, pretended it was just a beatle. If the place was clean and lovely I’d be more inclined to deal with a flying spider type creature. Maybe even a single roach.

sorry no photos of it!! Was too scared!

Cockroaches are common in NY that is true, spiders can’t fly so I don’t know what the huge red thing was ? (Spider-Man maybe ?) . If you’ve seen a few cockroaches then there will be many more - is the Airbnb in a block of flats ? They can be really difficult to eradicate from buildings like that. I am not very bothered about insects unless biting/stinging, so I would probably put up with it, but if there were many cockroaches then I would want to move.

PavlovtheCat01 · 20/07/2022 13:29

I’d be tempted to pretend I knew nothing about the New York roaches if I didn’t see them. I didn’t even tell the kids, just said it was some American bug, perfectly normal. So as not to freak them out like i was freaked.

That sounds disgusting. I wouldn't book a holiday to New York to have to put up with that while I was there.

SofiaSoFar · 20/07/2022 13:30

I would be gone already, OP.

Is your DH trying to do this on the cheap, or something?

I can think of no other reason to put up with dirty infested accommodation; it's not all like that.

PavlovtheCat01 · 20/07/2022 13:31

Definitely not Spider-Man. This thing was not coordinated at all. And it didn’t say ‘hi this is your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man’ so can’t have been.

PavlovtheCat01 · 20/07/2022 13:33

The place is a converted garage next to the owners property and yes done cheap but also the only place available near the American family we are visiting. (They dont have room for us) and looked nice in the photos. They live about 30 mins from nyc on Long Island.
it was on the cheap but not any more.

I have a personal max limit, honed after travel across Asia and Australia, of one cockroach per day. Anything more than that suggests an issue and I am not prepared to stick around.

If it's next door to the owners, have you asked them for kill spray?

FWIW I didn't see any roaches in NYC.

PavlovtheCat01 · 20/07/2022 14:32

Thank you everyone. We are almost packed.

anyone stayed in any of the Hilton’s in NYC - time square or Central Park ones? Or any other recommendations?

Suggest you try to photograph/document as much evidence as possible if you’re planning to try getting a refund through Airbnbs notoriously awkward process.

RincewindsHat · 20/07/2022 14:42

I like Staybridge Suites near Times Square (now seems to be called TBA).

djdkdkddkek · 20/07/2022 14:43

yuk I feel for you

PavlovtheCat01 · 20/07/2022 15:01

I’m doing that now, photographing things. No bugs in sight for the camera though 😂
tbh right now, I care less about getting a refund and more about finding somewhere to stay that will improve our holiday spirit. I’ll try to deal with refund after we get back or let my brother in law who booked it deal with it. He can live in quite shitty situations and sees it as ‘fine’ so no doubt I’m dramatic to my extended family too. Don’t care right now. The kids are SO much happier that we are going somewhere else as am I and we’ve not even left yet.

Our 4 star NY hotel had bed bugs and they never replaced the towels after we put them on the floor.

NY was a major let down over all, give me London or Paris any day.

Kanaloa · 20/07/2022 15:11

I’ve stayed in New York and never experienced that type of accommodation, even when staying in very cheap places. I’m glad you’re moving - hope you’re having an amazing time anyway. Make sure to do loads of fun things!

GCAcademic · 20/07/2022 15:12

There are some real shitholes in NY, the most disgusting youth hostel I’ve ever stayed in was there. I’ve traveled to lots of developing countries and NY had the most unpleasant accommodation I’ve ever stayed in.

I hope you’re somewhere nicer very soon, OP.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 20/07/2022 15:20

I wouldn't have gone to new york in the first place because I know it would be like this, it stands to reason, anything affordable will be a shit hole.
I can think of 1000 nicer places to go in the states.
