Hi, so for the past two days I’ve had really bad stomach pain. Mostly to the right upper hand side. But it spreads. GP appointment booked for 9.30 call back.

The pain is always there - but when I vomit, it feels like my stomach is being strangled. So when this happens and I either go to be sick, or I’m vomiting, it feels like someone is strangling me and I’m going to pass out - nothing to do with my neck! It feels like it’s my stomach. Not sure if that makes sense? it’s horrific and worse than childbirth

My question is, does this warrant A&E even though I’m only in excruciating pain when the strangulation feeling comes on?

Thank you

Yes of course you can go to A and E with this! Any very severe stomach pain needs urgently investigating. It could be all sorts of things.

QuestionableMouse · 20/07/2022 08:05

If your GP is anything like mine, they're probably only send you there anywhere. Could be a lot of things - I'd honestly make my way there now.

Hope you get an answer! 😊

FannyFifer · 20/07/2022 08:05

Sounds like it could be your gallbladder or maybe appendix though that's usually lower down pain. Have you got a temperature, any other symptoms?

comealongponds · 20/07/2022 08:06

If you can possibly hang on another hour and a half to speak to the GP then I would do that. They may be able to refer you to an assessment unit at the hospital rather than A&E, although I would imagine the first step would be giving you a face to face GP appointment so they can feel your stomach themselves.

Einszwei · 20/07/2022 08:07

Sounds like it could be your gallbladder.
If you are still in unbearable pain that is not helped by paracetamol/ibuprofen then call 111.

They will be able to assess and send you to the hospital if necessary. If they think it is warranted, they can send you directly to the surgical assessment instead if going via A&E.

If the pain is intermittent and not getting any worse, I would wait until the GP call back.

SunflowerGardens · 20/07/2022 08:10

Yeah I would wait for the GP and see what they say. Sounds like your gallbladder possibly. I was very ill with mine over the weekend.

Fond · 20/07/2022 08:10

Really sorry! Forgot to mention my Gallbladder was removed last year

It didn't feel like this when I had an attack - the pain with that was awful but it didn't feel like strangulation in the stomach

No temperature. My heart feels like it's going a bit faster but that isn't unusual I suppose since I'm in a lot of pain

Only other symptom is vomiting when the strangulation feeling comes on

Please DON'T take ibuprofen or any NSAID with stomach pain. If it's an ulcer or similar, you risk doing more damage.

I know all GPs are different, but mine was absolutely no help with my stomach pain. Refused a face to face appointment and told me to buy and take some omprezalone. Do when I say head to A&E, I'm not basing it on nothing!

3luckystars · 20/07/2022 08:13

Yes it definitely is an emergency.

justasking111 · 20/07/2022 08:16

I'd head for the hospital which is where gp will send you.

SunflowerGardens · 20/07/2022 08:18

Definitely not your gallbladder then! I would still wait for the call from the GP first on the basis that if they bring you in to feel your stomach you'll have a doctor examining you probably well before you would have a doctor examining you in A&E given waiting times. If the GP isn't concerned and you continue to get worse A&E is always still an option.

QuestionableMouse · 20/07/2022 09:37

How are you getting on, @Fond@Fond

snowbellsxox · 20/07/2022 09:43

A&E

MistyRock · 20/07/2022 09:46

It could be a blockage. Are you passing wind and pooing okay?

Toddlerteaplease · 20/07/2022 10:20

GP's can by pass A&E so it was probably worth waiting for them many hospitals have a surgical triage unit.

mumto2teenagers · 20/07/2022 10:24

I would wait for the GP, my GP referred me to the hospital for a medical emergency once and it was much quicker than A&E. Had GP appointment at 10am, went straight to the correct department at the hospital and was seen before 11am.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 20/07/2022 10:28

You should be asking 111 not MN

riesenrad · 20/07/2022 10:29

Hernia? Hope you went to A&E.

LurpakAspirations · 20/07/2022 10:37

What did gp say?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 20/07/2022 14:28

My thoughts are possibly adhesions from your Gallbladder removal surgery or a hernia
GP will likely tell you to go to A&E anyway
I do hope you get answers very soon

Fond · 21/07/2022 11:12

Hi,

It is unclear just now if it's a hernia or twisted bowel (I've got a lot of scar tissue from previous gallbladder removed )

Been here since yesterday dosed up on the delights of morphine.

They're going to just open me up Laprascopically and see. Excuse spelling

LurpakAspirations · 21/07/2022 11:38

Good luck for the op, @Fond ! Hope you're feeling OK about it and it all goes smoothly Flowers

Spidey66 · 21/07/2022 11:52

I was going to suggest gallbladder too, but clearly that's not the issue!

Foronenightonly01 · 21/07/2022 12:16

Gosh - so glad you were taken seriously and they’re actually doing something!!!!…so often not the case sadly. Hope you get sorted and home ASAP 💐
