Can't sleep in my bedroom - help! Ways to cool it down?

QuestionableMouse · 19/07/2022 22:10

It's 37c in my bedroom currently- it's in the loft and has caught all of the heat. I have the window open as far as I can, two big fans blowing, keep misting water and it's not making a dent in the heat. The bed literally feels like the sheets have just come out of the dryer.

Problem is - I'm getting a new sofa delivered tomorrow so don't have one in the house to sleep on. The other bedroom is an office space with just a desk and a chair. I'd sleep on the floor on a duvet but I have a bad shoulder and need something soft.

How can I cool it down please?

Try putting a wet muslin if you have one over the fan. If not then try a tea towel? We did this is daughters room yesterday and it dropped degrees

SheWoreYellow · 19/07/2022 22:12

Open down windows and doors downstairs to get a through draft going. Accept that you’ll be staying up till midnight and just wait till then.

SheWoreYellow · 19/07/2022 22:12

Some!

HopefulBump · 19/07/2022 22:13

Wet a towel and drape it over yourself or underneath you on the bed

bellac11 · 19/07/2022 22:13

You cant cool the room down but you can cool you down, wet thin towel or sheet over you with the fan blowing over that, it will make you feel cool. You might have to re wet it through the night.

ShinyMe · 19/07/2022 22:14

I wish I knew an answer. I slept in the garden last night and it was moderately better, but omg my back hurt today!

QuestionableMouse · 19/07/2022 22:15

Windows are open downstairs. Might have to try opening the door for a bit but it's a weirdly laid out house and the loft struggles for air flow. Will try a wet muslin but it feels like the walls and carpet is radiating heat out 😕😕😕

Wet towel over yourself. I did this last night and it was the only thing that worked!

FlissyPaps · 19/07/2022 22:16

Turn the fans off! They will be blowing warm air around.

Cool flannels on your neck, chest, head. Run your wrists under cool water. Run a shallow cool bath and submerge your hands and feet.

Keep hydrated! Cool water not icy! Deep breathing. Hang in there - today has felt like the pits of hell!

Drag the mattress downstairs? Grab the cushions from the old sofa?

Pollydonia · 19/07/2022 22:17

Fill a large bottle with water. Freeze as much as you can before you go to bed. Put in front of fan.
Air con of sorts . - I live in Spain and when we didn't have aircon this helped. Also make sure the air coming inside is cooler, if not close your windows.

It's all gone unfortunately! Wish I could manage to get the mattress downstairs but I can't even loft it with my stupid shoulder! 😕

I'm not too bad atm, just had a nice cool shower but the room itself is so hot.

Thinking I might have to bed down in the other bedroom some how! ☹️

Got one fan at the window pulling cooler air in, and the other pointed towards the stairs to hopefully push the heat out!

The walls and carpet and bed are warm to the touch ☹️

Take a cool shower, wetting your hair completely, and then put vest top/pj bottoms on whilst you're still wet (ie don't dry yourself or your hair with a towel, just comb your hair and leave it wet). Get in to bed whilst you're still wet. If you still feel hot after a half hour or so, take another cool shower and repeat the process. If necessary get into bed with your hair dripping wet, your pillows etc will soon dry, and it will cool you down even if your room is baking.

Also, if you have any ice packs in the freezer (the kind you put in a cool bag for a picnic) get one or two of those out and take them to bed with you - kind of like a reverse hot water bottle. Hold the ice pack against your face/neck/stomach - alternate positions for a few minutes - lie on it, move it around the bed, hold it against your face/neck/stomach again. If you can get more than one ice pack so much the better.

Both of the above really work for me...definitely worth a try.

BritinDelco · 19/07/2022 22:27

If the airs cooler in your downstairs put one of the fans at the bottom of the stairs to push the cold air up.. it really works

girlfriend44 · 19/07/2022 22:31

Cold water bottle as in hot water bottle put it in the fridge.

itsnotmeitsu · 19/07/2022 22:31

I find the best way to cool down is to have a giant greyhound panting as he spreads himself across you when you're trying to sleep 🙄. Seriously tho', I do keep my curtains, blinds, etc shut all day in the parts of the house that I'm not using. My bedroom is east facing and I think it does make a difference. I find it works better than having the sun streaming in whilst having windows open. It keeps the room in shade all day and that helps.

Splicebaked · 19/07/2022 22:33

Ok try this

Put one fan just outside the bedroom door facing into the room and the other fan facing towards the window

This should hopefully draw all the stale hot air from inside the room outside

However first try one fan at a time starting with the one just outside the bedroom door

Eatthecake80 · 19/07/2022 22:34

I wish I knew,I’m currently sat outside in the drizzle!

LadyMaid · 19/07/2022 22:37

Put cold water in a hot water bottle and put it in the freezer.

Use the bottle to cool down your bed.

Glorieta · 19/07/2022 22:39

Make a base of blankets and towels to lie on downstairs with as many layers as you can....even cushions from garden furniture would do...then pop your duvet over it as a final mattress

It won't be the best but better than overheating upstairs

justsaythanks · 19/07/2022 22:51

I'm liking my "cold cloth" but still can't see me sleeping

QuestionableMouse · 19/07/2022 22:51

I've had a minor brainwave that seems to be helping! I've wedged* the fan in the velux window! It's pulling cool air in from outside (17c outside! Maybe I'll sleep in the car 😂)

The draped muslin is wet which is also helping I think! (the other bit is a makeshift fly screen because they're £200 and I don't want to pay that!)

Also changed the sheets on the bed for damp ones which feels amazing!

(*I say wedged but it's tied to the actual window so won't move and can't fall out!)

Can't sleep in my bedroom - help! Ways to cool it down?

I just bought a "cooling fan"... a fan that is supposed to blow cool air at your rather than just the room temperature air.
As no pp has mentioned one of these I hope I haven't been conned!
