To ask when realistically your will retire?

Do you think you can retire before 65?

And if you cannot retire before 65 do you think you will be able to work less hours (part time) topped up with your state pension and still afford life?

Anyone else think retirement will be a myth especially if you retire in the 2050s where the projection is that the retirement age will easily be 70 plus. The thought of people having to work at 70 is quite a sad sight.

I'm in my 30s and intend to retire from nursing at 60 at the absolute latest. I will lose 34% of my NHS pension if I do this, but it will be worth it. The current age for a full NHS pension under the 2015 scheme is 68: the oldest nurse I know who is still working is 62.

I might work part time to top up my salary, but it probably won't be in nursing! Will see how I feel at 60!

Can you retire but delay taking the pension until you're 67. Will you then not have the cut? Is that how it works? 34% is MASSIVE

My retirement will be my grave

Bloody hell...you're blunt! 😂

JupiterFifth · 19/07/2022 21:35

67 but I’d hope to be doing 3 days a week after 61, four days a week after 56. Stressful job, lots of responsibility.

Alltheseasonsaregreat · 19/07/2022 21:36

Took massive pension hit.( paid in for 30 years) at 57. Then went part time in something unrelated.
We have to live frugally ,but it seems to work.( no big holidays etc uk only)

Mrsherdwick · 19/07/2022 21:36

I retired at 58 but came out of retirement to nurse in the Nightingale Hosp/give vaccinations. I’m now re-retired.
Some physical jobs ie nursing/police etc are very hard to do when you are in your 60’s.
I am not able to take my nhs pension until I’m 67. I have a small private pension.

Hotpinkangel19 · 19/07/2022 21:36

I doubt I will! My husband had a life changing accident last year and is now disabled, so I think I'll be working forever, as he's now limited to what he can manage to do.

VickerishAllsort · 19/07/2022 21:37

I'll be 70 next year and work 2 days a week plus 2 childcare. I'd love to have a f

EsmeSusanOgg · 19/07/2022 21:38

Aim is for DH and I to retire at 60. Though we'll need to overpay into work/ private pensions to do that as we won't get state pension until 68 (or alter, who knows by then!).

Headbandheart · 19/07/2022 21:38

I retired at 55 last year. I started paying into a private pension at 20 and never stopped as I took maternity leave and worked part time for a while before going back to full time ( maternity was 6 months then).
once kids left home after uni I shoved as much money as I spare into my pension as SIPP . I prioritised it over holidays etc
i retired sooner than I planned mainly due to menopause and stress related illness. I was carer for my ex who had long term mental illness for years and was just worn out and becoming increasingly unwell myself

I don’t have massive income but it’s enough to do what I need and some of what I want each year. I’m careful with money, always have been.

please do t give up with the thought you will have to work into 70s. Save as many pennies as you can into your pensions - once kids leave home you’ll have more available money to save more seriously. Prioritise it whenever you can

VickerishAllsort · 19/07/2022 21:38

Ooops!
I'd love to have a fun-filled, worry-free retirement but have no-one to share it with as DH will work full time until he's carried out in a box.

theemmadilemma · 19/07/2022 21:40

55-60 ideally. Difficult as DP is 9 years younger but (and I understand) would prefer not to continue working after I retire. So that gives us 14 years max.

OrangeBananaFish · 19/07/2022 21:42

Never.

I'm 43 now and the state pension age forever goes up. I do have a few private pensions here and there, but due to moving jobs all the time (4 and a bit years is my longest) I have no idea where half of them are.

I've made various bad life decisions and now its something that I know I need to accept. I'm working until I drop dead.

cptartapp · 19/07/2022 21:44

At 55 from nursing without a doubt. I invested practically all my inheritance years ago for precisely this reason, and I have special class status so can take a big chunk and my lump sum at 55 with no penalty.
Four years to go.

Kite22 · 19/07/2022 21:45

Odd, but as I get older, it becomes less clear.
I could afford to, but actually now the dc aren't at home, it is much easier to work than it was 10 years ago.
I will probably finish somewhere between 60 and 65, but think it will depend on things like when grandchildren come along.

kitcat15 · 19/07/2022 21:45

im 57 and have just retired an returned so am working 2 days and getting nhs pension….I will go completely at 59

NorthernPud · 19/07/2022 21:45

I'm aiming for 60 at the latest. My work pension will be paid in full at 67 but I'm overpaying to retire two years early at 65 and will go at 60 and take the five year actuarial reduction of c25%. My pension scheme is an excellent one and I can manage from 60 until my full state pension kicks on at 67.

supertedlasso · 19/07/2022 21:47

I think I might be able to partially retire at 60 using the older pensions scheme but there's so way I would be able to fully retire until a lot nearer state pension age. Unfortunately I also have a bunch of chronic illnesses so I'm not 100% sure how I will manage to work to 68 (if they don't raise it again).

JaceLancs · 19/07/2022 21:47

I’m thinking 70
i will get state pension at 67 and will pay off mortgage by 65
working a bit longer will allow me to build up a bit of a cushion to supplement my meagre private pension

Longdistance · 19/07/2022 21:50

One of my pensions kicks in at 60. It’s not enough to live off, but I’d be able to go part time.

How old are you now? …because I’m 57 and I am knackered….I will last til 59 but that is my absolute limit….,I would have said the same as you even at 50…….but not anymore…I’m done with work

MissGlitterSparkles · 19/07/2022 21:52

I’m 45. Have had a pension since I was 22. I have no mortgage (own outright) but I honestly cannot see me retiring anytime before I’m 70. My pension is rubbish and will give me about £10k a year. No idea what the state pension is, but can’t see it being that much. Despite not having a morrgage my essential outgoings are around £2k a month. Not going to manage that on my pension.

However I also know a lot of people my age whi have no pensions. God knows what they will do.

How do you feel about that? Isn't it annoying the deductions you've had for years only to lose them?

Mellowyellow222 · 19/07/2022 21:54

I started working full time at 22, and always planned to retire at 62. Not sure why I though 40 years!

I am half way there. But will have to take a bit of a pension hit. Will see how the health and stress levels are by then!

The state pension is currently about £10k.a year

HOW are your expenses £2k a.month? Mine are that( well, were that until this cost of living thing) but that's with what I think is a big mortgage.

Cherrysherbet · 19/07/2022 21:56

I’ll be working ‘til I die. Can’t imagine ever being able to retire. No point in thinking about it.
