AIBU to buy a ceiling fan with light instead of a normal light fitting?

We're decorating and only now need to buy a light fitting for our sitting room. AIBU to buy a ceiling fan with a light fitting to help cool the room down? DH says it's totally old fashioned and unstylish whereas I'm sweating and hot & will do anything to cool down Thinking that next year will also have this extreme heat so it'll keep me cool but not in the cool sense.

Personally, YABU, they're horrific things. I'd just get a portable AC unit or a really good fan!

OneTC · 19/07/2022 18:44

They're not very stylish really but they're great. Very common where I'm from, and I think of them more functionally than aesthetically

ShinyMe · 19/07/2022 18:44

Have you tried one to know they work? I have one that was in my house when I bought it, and it's rubbish. Just moves the hottest air around a bit, and gets dusty on top and sprays the dust around, if you turn it on without cleaning it.

Do ceiling fans help? I know they'd move the air over your skin which would help sweat evaporate faster, but I would wonder if it would just push hot air from the ceiling downwards?

we have one in our bedroom, absolute godsend in the summer. They do do rather more modern looking ones now, Argos is a good place to start.

DilemmaDelilah · 19/07/2022 18:50

We had one and it was great! Didn't look fantastic but it certainly helped to keep the room cool. Can't have one now because the ceiling is too low.

Aposterhasnoname · 19/07/2022 18:54

Got one in the conservatory and it definitely helps. It’s reasonable looking as as well, as far as those things can be.

danadas · 19/07/2022 18:54

We have them in the bedrooms and I think that they make a difference. I don't cope with the heat well at the best of times and find the breeze really helps. Not the most stylish but sorted out my night sweating.

LadyMaid · 19/07/2022 19:00

I purchased this one from the range.

We run it for an hour or so before bed on warm nights. You can set it to switch off after a certain time.

We wouldn't have been able to sleep without it on all night this week though.

The light on it is really bright too.

Dah fitted one to the bedroom for my first pregnant summer 16 years ago-has been used at least 6 months of the year since and is truly the difference between sleeping and not during hot summer nights.

i wa looking to get one in the lounge-the one in my bedroom is quite old fashioned but there are definitely more stylish ones these days

APurpleSquirrel · 19/07/2022 19:04

We bought two last year; one in the living room & one for the landing & they definitely help! I really don't give a toss about the aesthetics, they don't look awful, & they're practical. Been a godsend this summer. They need a light dusting every so often.

Hobele · 19/07/2022 19:09

Ae have one in our bedroom. We only moved here a year ago and never used it. This thread inspired me to put it on. Can't do it, bloody cat is trying to catch it...

APurpleSquirrel · 19/07/2022 19:09

We have these ones:

DyingForACuppa · 19/07/2022 19:13

Our house had these when we moved in and I was adamant we were going to pull them out because they are so ugly/old fashioned, but ended up using them the first summer (pregnant and hot!) so they've stayed. They probably only get used 1-4 days each year though, so I wouldn't consider them a necessity. Ours work well, they are positioned right over the bed and sofa.

BarbaraofSeville · 19/07/2022 19:21

We got this one from B&Q last year for our bedroom. It's not quite as horrible/old fashioned as some and it certainly makes it more comfortable for sleeping in this weather.

HuffleWoof · 19/07/2022 19:22

Not stylish but bloody brilliant! Ours is a godsend. Keeps the room so cool and very quiet.

GardenersDelight · 19/07/2022 19:23

We had one but I'm really noise sensitive despite being partially deaf and couldn't cope with the vibration noise it gave off. My OH tried all sorts of muffling but had to go!

CuteNFluffy · 19/07/2022 19:24

If you get one that switches directions it can push earn air down in the winter as well.

TheBitterBoy · 19/07/2022 19:25

They definitely work, we have family in Texas and they are standard in the bedrooms (not all houses have ac in all rooms despite what you might hear about the US). They make a huge difference.

MugginsOverEre · 19/07/2022 19:29

We got one that wasn't an open "propeller" type, more like a modern sealed unit fan with a ring of light surrounding and I wouldn't be without it.

Aprilx · 19/07/2022 19:31

I had them installed in a couple of bedrooms 14 years ago when we bought this house. They cool the room down brilliantly, I don’t see what is unstylish about them, but in any case I don’t care.

LurpakAspirations · 19/07/2022 19:32

I predict we're going to see a new fashion for them in light of our hotter summers, which will mean lots of nice stylish ones being designed!

Intransigentcat · 19/07/2022 19:32

There are lots of designs about now, they're not all old fashioned.

If you Google ikhos ceiling fans, you'll see some very modern ones, led ones, Wi-Fi controlled etc.

Phillips do one with retractable blades for when it's not in use. Think it's called the atlas model
