AIBU to buy a ceiling fan with light instead of a normal light fitting?

We're decorating and only now need to buy a light fitting for our sitting room. AIBU to buy a ceiling fan with a light fitting to help cool the room down? DH says it's totally old fashioned and unstylish whereas I'm sweating and hot & will do anything to cool down Thinking that next year will also have this extreme heat so it'll keep me cool but not in the cool sense.

I have bought the Philips Atlas from a German supplier. It doesn’t have propellers and looks like a normal light when the fan isn’t in use.
If we all get aircon, we destroy the planet even sooner. It’s a very hard question to answer.

alexdgr8 · 19/07/2022 19:35

that's good point, also re ceiling height.
i stayed in a guesthouse where i had a narrow escape as i stretched my arm up while pulling a jumper off.
i felt quite stunned when i realised what might have happened. i need my hands.

Ladyof2022 · 19/07/2022 19:35

I have this one in my study and I would never, ever want to be without it!

The remote control is for the light as well as the fan, which is handy.

Had one since 2002. Installed one in DD’s room in 2020. Seriously considering ds’s room despite it being small.

WinterMusings · 19/07/2022 19:48

@Dreamqueen have you shown him the sort that @Aposterhasnoname has linked to. They're not 'the last word' in stylish, but they're a million times better than the old dust traps. I'd rather have an oscillation fan on the windowsill, but if DH wanted one of those overheads I could live with it.

DH has done this a few times & still has his hands! It hurts, but the blades are Perspex.

LurpakAspirations · 19/07/2022 20:04

@Ladyof2022 even though its only designed for winter and sunner? 😁

alphasox · 19/07/2022 20:08

It’s true they are a bit old fashioned looking but we stayed in a holiday cottage with them in the bedrooms last week and they were amazing! Made the room much cooler than the fan I have going at home. I want one now too!

LivingDeadGirlUK · 19/07/2022 20:11

I think they are great, don't have one in my house but do in the conservatory. I first came across them when backpacking in Oz, most of the hostels and hotels had them.

Yes you can get a portable one but there is something nice about laying in bed with one above you (this is why I always asked for the top bunk :) ) I would totally get one in the bedroom.

NotKatherineRyan · 19/07/2022 20:14

SIL is an interior stylist and DH works in construction - both have said they’re fitting a lot more and they’re coming back into fashion. Quite a few nicer looking ones around nowadays so YANBU

VladsPants · 19/07/2022 20:15

100% get one. I’ve evangelical about them.

user143677433 · 19/07/2022 20:16

We’ve had them in all bedrooms for 20 years and they are wonderful. You need to use them properly though. They are supposed to go in one direction through the day to bring cool air upwards to cool the ambient temperature of the room, then reverse when you go to bed to blow air over you.

Orhe · 19/07/2022 20:18

We have one in all bedrooms (live in a hot climate) and once you get used to it you will never go back. Went back to the UK this spring and even then the room felt so stuffy without a fan. They can also help heat a room in the winter, you just flip the direction it spins and it pulls the cold air up and pushes warm down.

They are not sharp. I’ve bashed ours a few times (our ceilings are 2.3m) but it’s just like accidentally bashing your hand on the kitchen counter (or is it just me that does that 😅)

wherearebeefandonioncrisps · 19/07/2022 20:22

A friend of mine has one. It's a dual action one in that you can set it to make a room cool or warm. She said it's the best money she ever spent.
I don't think fashion should be a consideration. If it is then you're daft.

cushioncovers · 19/07/2022 20:26

I had them in all the bedrooms in my last house. They are a godsend in the hot weather although they aren't the nicest looking things. I'm seriously considering forking out for a mobile air con unit ready for next summer. I've felt so ill this last week in the heat.

TheGoogleMum · 19/07/2022 20:28

I want one. I dont care about it being unfashionable ourhouse gets too hot and I'd like more ways to cool it down

myuterusistryingtokillme · 19/07/2022 20:43

When we moved we looked at the ceiling fan in what is now our bedroom, and laughed about how we'd never use it. It is on pretty much every night during summer thanks to our south facing garden

myuterusistryingtokillme · 19/07/2022 20:43

(Bedroom is at the back of the house)

BlooberryBiskits · 19/07/2022 21:34

They were in my house when I bought it (master bedroom & office): I wouldn’t have chosen them but they are practical (as long as you dust the blades!)

I use Alexa to dim the light as mine don’t have dimmers

They are quiet & space saving, but I don’t know if they are any better than eg a tower fan

JellyfishandShells · 19/07/2022 21:39

My BIL has them in his house in Washington DC, which can get very humid. He uses them in addition to or instead of the built in A/C . I have found them very effective and there is a retro charm to them.

Trulyweird1 · 19/07/2022 21:41

Wouldn’t be without it. Like others say, it can reverse direction in the winter to push warm air down into the room, or as now, push warm air up. Yes you have to dust them; they may be heavy and require mounting on a ceiling joist and they may need a specialist connection, but in weather like this, or when menopausal hot flushes start, they are magic. So much better than a conventional fan.
some are seriously ugly, but some are very unobtrusive.

ohheckwhatnow · 19/07/2022 21:48

We had them in every room when we moved in, but we got rid. Certainly regretting that decision tonight 😭

Longfurry · 19/07/2022 21:51

I have never even used one but actually I think they look great! Probably because as a child I thought they were the height of modernity (we didn't have them).

MissPinkCakeyBun · 19/07/2022 22:05

Have them in both bedrooms and fitting one in our front room too. I think better for the environment than AC and for a menopausal mum of 53 in this weather I adore them.
