We have a 11 month old puppy who is still full of excited energy.
Today I went to the supermarket
Walked back down the street and noticed the back door was open.
Boyfriend sat in chair ....didn't even realise the pup had got out or door was open.
He has a habit of not closing the door properly.
30 minutes frantically searching for him thankfully ...he is hot and panting but fine.

Aibu to be mad? It could of ended so differently

Do you not have an enclosed back garden?

If the answer to this is no, then you need to get a baby gate or something similar in place.

KangarooKenny · 19/07/2022 16:53

Are you planning on having kids with him ? If so, you might want to put a dog tag on them so they can be returned 🤣🤣

Perple · 19/07/2022 16:54

I would go batshit crazy at that! Even if the weather was not boiling be coulD have been run over, stolen or run away.

really really irresponsible.

he was in charge of a little life!!!!!

GodspeedJune · 19/07/2022 16:55

Yanbu. I’d be fuming. He could have been run over, let alone the heat today.

Immaterialatthispoint · 19/07/2022 16:55

I’d be cross, but we all make mistakes. I’d treat him as id expect to be treated if it were me who had made the cock up.

Perple · 19/07/2022 16:55

When my dog was a puppy and we had a front door that opened onto the street we had a system where the person opening the front door had to yell out “puppy clear” and the person in charge of puppy had to yell back “puppy clear”
and only then could the door be carefully opened and closed as quickly as possible!

cheaas · 19/07/2022 16:56

No the back door is just on to a lane.
It's a greyhound so no baby gate would be big enough for him 🙈
I've said from now on,just come in and lock the door then you know it's shut.
That was so scary

I'd be furious too.

Ducksinthebath · 19/07/2022 16:56

It could have been different but accidents will happen. I’m sure at some stage you’ll make a mistake or step on the dog’s paw or something.

KangarooKenny · 19/07/2022 16:56

You can get a full door baby gate so you can have the door open.

This , I would struggle to forgive

cheaas · 19/07/2022 16:58

He said it's because of the heat the door isn't closing properly.
He has slept all afternoon ,the heat wiped him out.
Oh @KangarooKenny thanks I will look into that

Fuckwit. Is he sorry?

I have a 1.2m tall gate. That would be tall enough…. Leave a 10cm gap underneath and you’ve got well over 4ft.

AndSoFinally · 19/07/2022 16:59

You can get a full door baby gate so you can have the door open.

You still have to remember to shut it though, and if he can't be arsed to check the back door is shut properly, this won't make a difference

Perple · 19/07/2022 17:07

As a short term measure - put a massive note taped onto the back door and then another one taped over the back door handle saying “check the puppy is safe before you open the door”.

im not joking!!!

rbe78 · 19/07/2022 17:13

I would be annoyed (and very shocked and scared by the incident right now), but everyone fucks up occasionally. Absolutely guaranteed that you will do soemthing equally stupid with the dog at some point, so give him a break.

@Immaterialatthispoint they can jump 5 foot. Need to be really careful with greyhounds because they can jump really high - plus they have a chase instinct. So if there’s a cat/fox etc in the garden and a 4 ft baby gate then they could be over it and away!

CalistoNoSolo · 19/07/2022 17:21

I would have been fuming and not in the slightest bit sympathetic that you stupid boyfriend felt the need to sleep all afternoon. Tbh, if he has a habit of leaving the door open (and no doubt, other couldn't give a fuck behaviour) the puppy getting out because of him would probably be a deal breaker for me.

CalistoNoSolo · 19/07/2022 17:23

I've had off track rescue greyhounds and unlike lurchers, they don't know they can jump, you have to teach them. No idea if it's a general greyhound thing, or confined to ex-racers though.

WinterMusings · 19/07/2022 17:30

Did he help to look for the puppy? What was his attitude like?

more importantly have you thoroughly check your puppy's paws to see if they're burnt? I'd actually take him to the vet to get him checked over in this heat.

Blushingviolets · 19/07/2022 17:35

I’ve got a greyhound. She is 8 now and a baby gate stops her, to be fair she’s thick so a door pushed part closed stops her because she freaks out about pushing it open. Many a time she’s been stood outside at the back door like a fool after night time wees. On a weird side note, did you post about it on a local Facebook group? I’m down at my parents and my mum was telling me about a greyhound that got out today but couldn’t then find it 😂 weird coincidence probably.

cheaas · 19/07/2022 17:36

He helped me look and it was actually him who found him.
Yeah his paws are fine,he's ate his tea and drank lots of water.
Even treated him to some ice Lolly to keep cool
He seems fine -and has just ripped up some newspapers (so normal service ha resumed)
