We have a 11 month old puppy who is still full of excited energy.
Today I went to the supermarket
Walked back down the street and noticed the back door was open.
Boyfriend sat in chair ....didn't even realise the pup had got out or door was open.
He has a habit of not closing the door properly.
30 minutes frantically searching for him thankfully ...he is hot and panting but fine.

Aibu to be mad? It could of ended so differently

I would be annoyed (and very shocked and scared by the incident right now), but everyone fucks up occasionally. Absolutely guaranteed that you will do soemthing equally stupid with the dog at some point, so give him a break.

Really? So all dog owners will put their pets in danger at some point will they?

"He has a habit of not closing the door properly"

Everyone makes mistake but if they keep making the same ones there's a problem. What does he plan to do with regard to the door issue and that pup can get out if he is careless?

I've told him every time he comes home,he locks the door and puts his key on the side -that way he can see the door is clearly locked

You need to stick up signs. He won’t remember

I'm thinking of putting post it notes on door
It's such a basic thing too

I would be really annoyed but not show it as I’ve done it myself and know how easy it is to do.

I lock my doors when I come home, have a baby gate and recently put up a large gate outside just incase.

If he makes a habit out of it then it’s different.

No the back door is just on to a lane.
It's a greyhound so no baby gate would be big enough for him 🙈
I've said from now on,just come in and lock the door then you know it's shut.
That was so scary

You can get extra high dog gates. I had one for my lurcher

If that was my boyfriend, he would be occupying a bed in the nearest intensive care unit!

In fairness, my front door swells in the heat and sometimes when you’re certain it’s shut, it isn’t.

You do need to either install a baby gate or teach your dog bulletproof ‘door manners’ (they need to wait for permission to cross any threshold), I taught my dog very early on and he won’t step over the threshold until he’s invited to. Little vampire Grin

My greyhound didn’t know she could jump….

A lot of ah we all make mistakes - I've a dog, 2 dc and an un enclosed garden. Between the 3 of us no one has ever left the door open. The kids can manage im sure a grown man can. The sign is a good idea OP. Not sure how a baby gate would help if he forgets to close it either. Glad he's ok
