To raise a complaint to the school

Aibu to complain to the school that under 6 year olds were taken out for 30-45 minutes this morning given the temperatures (28°c) to play?

I am a committed and experienced complainer but I can't see your issue, 28 is OK.

So if you were on your holidays abroad would you stay inside all day? I think not.

Absolutely this. Don’t be ‘that parent’

starfishmummy · 19/07/2022 17:07

How do you know they could rearrange it for another day? There will be other things planned, wherever they went to might not be available.

I assume you were also walking them home when it was even hotter, or putting them in an overheated car....

ilovepuppies2019 · 19/07/2022 17:14

I'm Australian so we are used to hot temperatures but honestly, 28 degrees is warm rather than hot. If it was too hot to be outside then we would be inside for half of the year. It's perfectly fine to run around in with a hat and ideally with a drink after. Your child will be fine!

VickyEadieofThigh · 19/07/2022 17:16

Don't be DAFT.

Maymaymay · 19/07/2022 17:17

28 is fine. Our classrooms hit 30 degrees by 9.30 this morning.

Topgub · 19/07/2022 17:19

28 degrees?

Seriously?

DelphiniumBlue · 19/07/2022 17:25

How do you know how long they were out for?

Lacey247 · 19/07/2022 17:28

My 3 year olds Nursery had 2 hours outside this morning which I thought was a bit much

50mg · 19/07/2022 17:28

Did anyone come to harm?

We're all desperate for it to drop to 28 (tomorrow's forecast) here 😆

What I don't understand is that this was an off site visit which could have been held off until tomorrow/Thursday when the temperatures dropped.

There are probably very valid reasons why it couldn’t be put off until tomorrow or Thursday, even if the school doesn’t explain all of them to the parents.

DD said their classroom was 40 degrees yesterday, 45 in the playground & 33 under the trees on the field - they spent the morning on the field but the afternoon in class.
28 outside is fine as long as they had sunscreen, hats, water & shade - that's no more than many places people go on holiday to & stay outside for much longer.

Have your told the met office as they seem to think that 40 is the highest temperature.

Could well be if in direct sun and tarmac. Metoffice official temp is always in the shade and carefully positioned to avoid heat from hard surfaces, reflection and buildings.

OrOrchids · 19/07/2022 17:37

😂brilliant!

Hiddenvoice · 19/07/2022 17:39

Was the off site visit booked or paid for? If so then it maybe could not have been rearranged. Did you know about the visit beforehand? If so then you could have contacted the school to explain that you didn’t want your child to attend.
As long as you provided suntan lotion, a hat and plenty of water whilst there being shade then I’d hope it would be okay for a short time in the morning before the main heat of the day.

Mumofsend · 19/07/2022 17:39

28 is a perfectly normal and reasonable temperature. They are 6, not ice pops.

Testina · 19/07/2022 17:39

How many collapsed with heat stroke? 1 or 2, YABU. 3 or more, YANBU.

SuperSange · 19/07/2022 17:41

Where was the visit to? It's possible that they couldn't accommodate a change of date; there are other schools about. Confused

The Met Office reported temperatures are taken in the shade. A black tarmac playground in full sun will be hotter.

LiquidLuck · 19/07/2022 17:44

YABU unless you can be specific with the nature of the complaint. ‘Because they went outside when it was 28’ isn’t cause enough on its own without further detail.

I’ve been vocal on other threads about the 40 degree heat in my area and intensity of the sun being dangerous, despite posters calling some of us snowflakes. I am anything but and have spent a lot of time in other very hot countries. However I was happy for my DC to be out early morning at school - 10ish - as they communicated they would be in all day after that. Sun cream, hats, water bottles, covered up/PE kit type clothes and in the shade. all mandatory. Their school has been v sensible and remained open.

So tell us specifically what’s happened as it’s 29 here again tomorrow.

Mally100 · 19/07/2022 17:45

Go stick your head in the fridge, give it a wobble and then go calm down. The kids were fine weren't they. Did you expect them to sit cooped up in the class the entire day - that would have been a problem too if they were!

Workyticket · 19/07/2022 17:50

You're being daft.

And off site visits are a nightmare to organise. You need parent helpers, make sure other schiols aren't going at the same time etc. Not easy to re-arrange

GirlInACountrySong · 19/07/2022 17:53

only on mumsnet!

Blackmoggy · 19/07/2022 18:02

Badgirlgonegood · 19/07/2022 16:33

Are they all still alive and well?

What kind of a question is that? So complaints can only be made after a child dies because of a schools stupidity and lack of awareness?
