How much ice cream/lollies are you giving to you little ones?

Have basically stocked up on ice lollies, icecreams etc. My freezer looks like an icecream shop atm. Its all my little ones are asking for. And ive given in due to not wanting them dehydrate in this heat.
I bought the healthy frozen yoghurt ones with no added sugar and the pure fruit juice ice lollies - theyre expensive but we have now ran out. The shop that stocks them near to me have also ran out so iv basically been given them normal ice creams lollies- fruit pastels twisters, nobbly bobbly etc.
Im not too fussed with my 4 year old as she is the world's best eater and eats all her veg etc. Its my 20 month old who is the world's fussiest eater and has only gotten worse with the heat so so is hardly eating (which I get as us adults can be the same) but so far shes had a fruit pastel lolly, ice pop and going to give her a mini milk now as shes all hot and bothered.
How much is too much? Im worried if shes going to get addicted and just expect it everyday 😶😑

No little ones but yesterday I had three and just had my first today 🤣

Comefromaway · 19/07/2022 14:06

My kids are grown up now but I have a freezer full of ice pops.

NCHammer2022 · 19/07/2022 14:07

I had more than DD yesterday. This is an exceptional 2 days and she can have as many as she wants (which in the end was 2 homemade fruit juice lollies and a knock off cornetto).

ShandaLear · 19/07/2022 14:09

Stock up on ice pops and while it’s very hot let them have as many as the want. They’re a manageable size and they’re just frozen squash. I remember when we were little my mum would freeze squash in empty yoghurt cartons and that kept up occupied for hours! You could also buy the lolly moulds and that way you could make healthy orange/apple/pineapple lollies with juice.

kegofcoffee · 19/07/2022 14:10

We have been giving either Jude's 'rocket' lollies or homemade blended watermelon and strawberry ice lollies

Fairislefandango · 19/07/2022 14:15

There's no need to go overboard for fear of dehydration. Water or weak squash will hydrate them better than lollies!

notforonesecond · 19/07/2022 14:19

As many as they like while it’s this hot, can’t be arsed worrying about it.

When it cools down tomorrow my littlest will still expect ice lollies on tap and then I’ll say no and he’ll huff and puff about it and I’ll still say no and then we’ll go back to normal.

AuntieMaggie · 19/07/2022 14:20

Combination of ice pops and ice cream from a tub here - struggling to get mine to drink much so 3/4 yesterday. I'm not going to stress about the sugar as usually they have them once in a blue moon and when DC was in hospital last year and wouldn't eat they told me ice cream was good to keep up fluids.

FizzyLizt · 19/07/2022 14:20

None haha. She drinks water happily and is eating fruit like strawberries, grapes etc too.

UnalliterativeGeorge · 19/07/2022 14:21

I have one who doesn't drink enough and so any liquid is a bonus right now. When we're back to more normal temperatures we'll be back to our usual rules. It's not a battle I'm willing to fight when it's 39 degrees outside!

Steelesauce · 19/07/2022 14:32

I get low sugar/low calorie ice poles (£1.50 for 20) that you freeze yourself. I buy a few boxes and keep the freezer well stocked and let them have as many as they want.

Macbeth8 · 19/07/2022 14:36

My youngest hardly drinks..she is just fussy period. She will only have her bedtime milk happily but otherwise hardly sips water and juice.
Weirdly, the only non-milk drink she takes OK is those Purdeys natural bottles as I like them!
Hows everyone else's los eating?

I just freeze cucumbers. Far better to suck on a frozen cucumber than consume unnecessary sugar.

Goldbar · 19/07/2022 14:40

4yo has had 2 ice lollies a day for the past week. DC is not eating much, but is drinking lots of iced water so not worried about dehydration. Dinner is mostly rejected atm so have been offering cereal with cold milk instead.

AppleBarrel · 19/07/2022 14:41

My dc is older, but yesterday had a bowl of ice cream when home from school at about 3.30, and an orange juice lolly about 5pm (then tea at 6.30, ate less than usual but I don’t worry about that in this heat.)
Turned out they were given lollies at school yesterday too. I think it’s fine.

We used to live in a hotter country and my then 20 month old had an ice cream most days. Just reduce sugar across other foods if you are worried.
You can offer frozen fruit too. Frozen banana mashed is quite ice cream like, you can make your own lollies. Raspberries work quite well too.
Dc is very slim, so no adverse effects here.

This is exactly what will happen here. I couldn’t get too bothered about whether my toddler has an ice cream today in this heat. She will definitely ask for them tomorrow, have a strop when I say no, and then we’ll move on. I think as long as you are able to put in the boundary and stick to it when needed then it’s totally fine to be more lax today.

liveforsummer · 19/07/2022 14:47

Get some lolly moulds and make them out of fresh juice or squash. Will save you a fortune over buying those

Fixyourself · 19/07/2022 14:47

As many as they like in this heat!

Curiosity101 · 19/07/2022 14:49

I know sugar is seen as evil now and is known to be addictive... But there's addictive and then there's addictive...

2 days shouldn't cause any issues. Once the weather cools down I'm sure you'll say no to lollies and offer something healthier. The toddler will complain and eventually they'll give in and accept things are back to usual.

Theladybirdthatsaidboo · 19/07/2022 14:50

It’s two days of historic temperatures. I’ve stopped cooking (too hot) so mine are eating cereal, sandwiches, fruit, cold pasta salad, diluted squash and as many ice creams and ice lollies as they want.

Normal rules about proper meals and vegetables and limited treats and only drinking water resume tomorrow. They can “expect” all they want, they’ll quickly learn the ice cream party is over!

oh behave!

lots of ice creams and ice lollies here, yoghurt and frozen fruit blended into “icecream” with sprinkles to get some nutrition in (also it’s bloody delicious for breakfast)

light foods, not too much meat as it’s heavy to digest in the heat- had Vietnamese summer rolls with prawns last night and it was a great warm weather dinner. Open sandwiches and salad for lunch. Make sure to add salt to your own needs.

water heavy veg like cucumbers, courgettes, leafy things
and watermelon/ other melons.

lots of iced coffee for me and DH.

little ones overheat quickly, the sugars not great in normal circumstance, but when I lived in a Middle Eastern country everything and added sugar (and salt) to give easy energy in the heat.

crack on with the lollies!!

Macbeth8 · 19/07/2022 14:59

Thanks
Yes been trying cucumbers as youngest is hardly eating. Ive got some carrot juice from the Polish shop..its fresh carrot soup with added apple juice to make it sweeter. I always buy it for when they have been ill with tummy bugs as at least its "liquid food"
Currently after more ideas for food in this heat. Were having hummous, wraps, sandwiches but anything else?

Fruit salad and ice cream is all I got in DD last night. Water heavy foods like salad, veg, fruit etc. Soup is good too, especially with some salt in for hydration. Let them have lollies, it'll cool and hydrate them and a couple of days of sugary lollies won't do any harm

MinnieMountain · 19/07/2022 15:23

As many as he wants. He’a not long home from school and is starting his second ice lolly.
