To feel down about the state of Covid?

Fadeout83 · 19/07/2022 10:58

My family just got our first infection and so I’m just pondering things and feeling pretty down about the fact that Covid isn’t going anywhere and this is our life now. Masks and worry and not knowing what repeated infections will mean for our and our kids futures. Not to mention future lock downs, ongoing masks (in our country anyway) and general hesitation for life to get back to normal. Sitting here just worried sick my kids will be the ones who have a negative outcome etc.

Is it just me and the fact that I’m in the thick of it?

Can’t say this is my life experience at all. I’m not noticing any hesitation for life to get back to normal.

Covid doesn’t worry me at all day to day.

Yodaisawally · 19/07/2022 11:04

I assume you aren't in the UK? Life is very much back to normal.

Shoxfordian · 19/07/2022 11:19

Not sure where you’re posting from: no masks in the uk anymore

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/07/2022 11:25

Need to name the country OP- the U.K. has cracked on with life regardless, I expect eventually even countries like China will move on

Fadeout83 · 19/07/2022 11:27

I live in Japan. No mask mandates but everyone just wears one all the time. I’m sitting in an Airbnb at the moment on holidays (overseas) with kiddo because we can’t get back to Japan until we test negative so i have 7 days more to low key freak out about it all.

I am in the UK and whilst everyone says they are going about as normal, I am seeing friends and relatives catch it for the 2nd/3rd times and suffer greatly with it. Even if they did not before. Not to mention long covid - I had symptomless Covid at Easter but have had chest issues for weeks and weeks now, where as I never suffered with them before Covid and now I worry that this could be a Long Covid symptom.

I dont know what the solution is, but its not normal and its not nice to think about.

Hbh17 · 19/07/2022 11:39

Not worried in the slightest, and never have been. Covid is here to stay but - assuming you are vaccinated - it is a very mild illness/inconvenience.

Perhaps you should be lobbying your Government to remove any rules about masks/testing/isolation/lockdowns because those are the things that have been causing harm around the world and the vaccination programme now makes them unnecessary and redundant. However, I do sympathise if you have a Government that is excessively cautious.

It’s just like the knowledge that the flu is a thing. We just get on with life in the same way that we do with that knowledge.

It may be for some, for many it isn't. Just take a look at the ongoing covid thread and the amount people are suffering.

What solution could there be? Its endemic, like flu, has a vaccination programme, like flu. Its dangerous to some and can be deeply unpleasant, like flu. This is as good as its going to get, we have to live with it and get on with our lives like we did before when flu was a thing but covid was not around

MarshaMelrose · 19/07/2022 11:45

I forget about covid on a day to day basis. Even hospitals aren't wearing masks anymore. Who knows what will happen with covid in the future? Individual govts can't really do much about it mutating in other countries across the world. I wouldn't criticise a govt for being cautious, they're just doing what they think is right for their citizens. But I do appreciate the freedom we have in the uk now.

MeenzAmRhoi · 19/07/2022 11:45

I have covid for the first time too, op. I feel similar, though maybe not as worried. The thought of catching this every few months is a horrible thought. I have some family members in the UK that are just ignoring it now and treating it like a normal cold but I'm not quite there yet. I also live in an EU country and am not allowed out until I test negative. Day 6 at home with a toddler is taking its toll...

Mybeautifulfriend22 · 19/07/2022 11:46

@Fadeout83 just stated the masks aren’t mandated people actually just wear them for infection control measures.

You will get dismissive attitudes on here regards to covid. The U.K. is pretending covid is a cold. I’ve just had it while it wasn’t severe it was not just a cold even vaccinated.

Honestly these waves of repeated infection as it continues to mutate and evade immunity from a new virus are doing untold future damage to some peoples health. But people are bored of covid and it’s easier to just pretend it’s over. Than deal with actual ways to minimise it like better ventilation and sick pay. ( not lockdowns or strict measures before anyone starts)

Hope you are all well @Fadeout83 and all get home soon.

Bigmouthshouthotair · 19/07/2022 11:47

Well that varies between hospitals and trusts. They certainly are around here.

Masks are very much still in my trust they never got rid of them. We were hit very hard by covid and are cautious about IPC and most actually got rid for a couple of weeks and reinstated for this waves.

underneaththeash · 19/07/2022 11:49

There’s little point on dwelling about something neither you or anyone else can change.

I had it for the first time in May and felt awful (however, I’d dodged it twice in the house previously). The only think I’m doing differently is avoided crowded places a few days before holidays, as I don’t want to be I’ll when I’m away.

Icedbannoffee · 19/07/2022 11:52

Just because the government here doesn't give a hoot doesn't mean covid isn't still a thing. Whilst it's great to see hospitality and schools etc back to normal, healthcare settings have been disregarded and its still costing lives. My dad died from covid he caught in hospital (he was in for something else and was recovering well) the week after they said no masks required; funny enough after a spate of deaths they have now said they need to be worn. I think that's a sensible approach- life going on as normal but things in place for places where vulnerable people are.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 19/07/2022 11:54

I'm in the UK and there are still masks here (though not nearly enough). We most likely won't get anymore lockdowns unfortunately due to the economy and poor excuse of a government. There's nothing we can do, just sit and wait and try to avoid it as much as possible. And also avoid the people who think it's over, the fools

TheKeatingFive · 19/07/2022 11:55

it’s easier to just pretend it’s over. Than deal with actual ways to minimise it like better ventilation and sick pay.

To do either of those properly would be very costly and their capacity to minimise covid (whatever you mean by that) is far from evidenced.

With the cost of living crisis upon us, the debt that needs to be repaid, every sector of society clamouring for pay increases and more support, I just don't think this is something that will be a big priority.

Fadeout83 · 19/07/2022 11:55

Thanks for replies all. It’s nice to read other peoples thoughts as a distraction.

Japan Is a funny one. Masks were prevalent there long before Covid - people wore them for colds and hay fever so are more than happy to wear them all the time now. The government is even encouraging people to stop but it won’t happen.

@Mybeautifulfriend22 thank you! Physically I’m fine - an unpleasant cold - but mentally it’s really taken a toll being stuck in a foreign country with a sick kid. Anxiety is nowhere near under control at the moment!

@MeenzAmRhoi i hope you make a quick recovery too!

both kiddo and I are as vaccinated as we are allowed to be right now so I’m very grateful for that.

thanks for keeping me company everyone. Really appreciate it

I’m so sorry about your father. I lost mine unexpectedly last year (not to Covid though) so I understand your pain ❤️

I'm not sure what people would have happen.. back into lockdown? For how long? What's your exit strategy?

Sartre · 19/07/2022 11:59

I was really worried about it until I actually caught it. I’ve had it twice now (that I know of) and I have honestly had much worse colds. I wasn’t sick at all, no temperature or cough or anything horrible. I barely had symptoms of any kind either time, I only knew I had it because my DD had tested positive so I tested to check. My DC were unwell the first time we had it in early December but second time in April they weren’t arsed. So I’m honestly not bothered now at all, its just another shitty virus to live alongside.

Don’t have one. Just uselessly glum about it all tbh. I have no solution. I don’t want lockdowns and further setbacks for my kids. Just want a super effective vaccine Or something to extinguish the thing.
