just rescued a hedgehog from my pond with the help of my two neighbours we managed to cut the net off him it was all tangled up in his spines he must have been twisting around but kept himself afloat, I have put him in the shade in the hedge for now - think I can hear movement , he’s just sat there panting , any advice please please I’m panicking a bit
his claws were still hard as well so not sure how long he’s been in there thank you

Put fresh water out for him and look up local hedgehog or wildlife rescue, there will be someone in your area who can collect it and take care of it. It will need help - they are nocturnal so shouldnt be around in daylight.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 18/07/2022 17:44

Maybe leave a dish of water and some cat/dog food nearby and give him/her time to recover in the shade while you research local hedgehog rescue people? Facebook will probably find them for you fairly quickly.

torfa · 18/07/2022 17:44

If you have Twitter search for the hedgehog cabin, she's brilliant and her or one of her followers will probably have some advice

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 18/07/2022 17:45

Do you have a hedgehog rescue anywhere near you?
Do you think there might be babies near by?
If you have a rescue within reasonable distance I think it’s prudent to call them tbh and see what they say. My DDs are working at our local rescue today funnily enough, there has been a few little hogs recently people have thought they were ok or that they could deal with trying to help them themselves and couldn’t and by the time they got them to the rescue (the experts) it was sadly too late.

ParvuliThankYouDebbie · 18/07/2022 17:46

If he’s been out for some time in the sun and he’s panting he might need urgent subcut fluids so time is tight

TwoMonthsOff · 18/07/2022 17:46

I tried rescues they’re all shut and in answerphone I left out a shallow tray of water for them too so goodness knows why he went for the pond, it’s raised too …I have three here

Sorry, just seen your update. Tbh if it’s out in the daytime it might not be that well anyway?

Bettysnow · 18/07/2022 17:47

My son found one which was injured and phoned the local vet who agreed to treat him. Sadly the hedgehog had to be put down. My son wasn't charged and i recall reading something that said vets have to treat them by law although im uncertain if thats actually true

TiddyTidTwo · 18/07/2022 17:48

Can you rinse a cold towel in water and sit him on it?

Sugar water? I'm no expert of course, just throwing ideas out.

Put him in a cool dark place?

userxx · 18/07/2022 17:48

You need a hedgehog rescue or take it to a vet, they treat wildlife for free. It's in shock and they can die very quickly, don't leave it outside. Can you put something in your pond to allow hogs to climb out ? So many die unnecessarily in ponds.

EdenMill · 18/07/2022 17:49

Do you have twitter? If not, I can ask the Hedgehog Cabin rescue on Twitter for you. They are usually v quick at responding from what I can see. If you provide ball park area may be useful.

CaramelJones · 18/07/2022 17:50

Won't the RSPCA come out to collect it if you call? I'm in Scotland so it's the SSPCA but they certainly would and have. I'd g

TwoMonthsOff · 18/07/2022 17:50

@ParvuliThankYouDebbie
yes we have Poole hedgehog rescue centre they just have a recording saying they’re full and closed so they advised ringing British hedgehog society too and they are also on answerphone
he was in shaded part of the pond luckily but it must have been early for him to be out goodnes knows why he ignored the shallow tray of water 😢

gamerchick · 18/07/2022 17:50

Take it to a vet. Theyll look after him. They won't charge you.

userxx · 18/07/2022 17:50

If he's out in the day then he's not well.

Lonelycrab · 18/07/2022 17:51

@pricklesinperil is good for advice on here.

Keep a close watch for flies buzzing around it. Fly strike can kill them within hours once they start to lay eggs on the hog. I think you need to speak to someone asap, I took my hogs to a place in Leatherhead (google it) as it was the closest place accepting hogs to me.

TwoMonthsOff · 18/07/2022 17:51

@userxx
there is a net on the pond as we have herons nearby on a lake , it’s got koi in, the pond is raised he must have climbed up

OP posts:
torfa · 18/07/2022 17:52

If it's out in the day time it's probably very ill. The panting may be the heat or it could be lungworm helpwildlife.co.uk/ there may be another local rescue listed on that site op

Nipplestoyou · 18/07/2022 17:52

I would call St Tiggywinkles for advice.

Fair enough, he's probably disoriented and poorly. Can you get to a vet ?

ProperVexed · 18/07/2022 17:55

You mention Poole. I attach a photo I saved of local wildlife rescues...in case you haven't tried one of these.

The panting could be water that has got into his lungs from being almost drowned. Def important to seek urgent veterinary help / professional advice
Secret World Animal Rescue may be able to give advice over the phone - they're in Somerset.
