just rescued a hedgehog from my pond with the help of my two neighbours we managed to cut the net off him it was all tangled up in his spines he must have been twisting around but kept himself afloat, I have put him in the shade in the hedge for now - think I can hear movement , he’s just sat there panting , any advice please please I’m panicking a bit
his claws were still hard as well so not sure how long he’s been in there thank you

Tried tiggywinkles voicemail or emergency advice regarding anything but hedgehogs

Most likely he is dehydrated so needs fluids,urgently.

Take him to a vets,they legally have to help. He needs fluids injected into him.

You need to move quickly to do this.

The vets will know the local people who can help and are tried to look after hedgehogs.

Pinotpleasure · 18/07/2022 17:58

I don’t know where you are but do look up the Facebook page “Hedgehog Rescue Deal” - I’m sure someone will be along soon with good advice.

Meanwhile could you please put him in a high sided cardboard box with a towel, water and some cat/kitten food (not fish) or dog/puppy food?

Sadly most vets will put a hedgehog 🦔 to sleep/ please refer to a hedgehog or wildlife rescue.

They will also advise on your ponds.

Also do look up the Facebook site and website of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society

LurpakAspirations · 18/07/2022 18:00

Take him to a vet, op.

cawfeee · 18/07/2022 18:02

Vets take a Hippocratic oath to ease suffering etc of animals, treating it for free usually means they will euthanise 'to ease the suffering'. You will have to pay if you want them to treat the hog.
Hedge hogs tend to get a lot of parasites, on particular lung worm, that makes them unwell. I don't imagine it's too expensive for a vet to prescribe, If that is what's wrong with the poor thing, but I would take to vets and get advice of you are not having any luck with local rescues.

TwoMonthsOff · 18/07/2022 18:02

He’s moved now and I can’t see him, don’t know if that’s good or bad ….

BeautifulDragon · 18/07/2022 18:02

Advice used to be to put them in a box in a cool place with cat food/ water and then release them when it gets dark.

Not sure if that's still the case.

Lazydazey · 18/07/2022 18:03

Tiggywinkles has a 24hr emergency line www.sttiggywinkles.org.uk

EssentiallySo · 18/07/2022 18:03

We had this happen yesterday with a hedgehog out in the day and not well nobody would come out and the local vet wouldn’t either so there was nothing else we could do for poor thing. Like others have said a hedgehog out in the day isnt a good sign

TwoMonthsOff · 18/07/2022 18:08

@EssentiallySo
im discovering that !
he has moved off I want to think that’s a good sign

I’ve left some food down and I’m on watch right by the feeding station

thank you so much for all the replies, really appreciated 😢

Probably not great. If you're encouraging hogs into your garden with feeding stations, maybe it's an idea to a have a cardboard box at the ready for emergency visits. I've taken three into rescue which have turned up in my garden in a bad way.

Lonelycrab · 18/07/2022 18:19

Wildlifeaid.org.uk are a hedgehog hospital and they’re open till 830 if you need some specialist advice on the phone.

Gribbit987 · 18/07/2022 18:21

They are not always ill when seen in the daytime.

Particularly if raising young they do venture out in the day. One of mine often appears in the summer daytime and it is because she has so many mouths to feed. Initially I was going to scoop her up and take her to the local hedgehog rescue. When I phoned for advice they said they do sometimes venture out in daytime for food/water or if disturbed. If no obvious signs of distress they say leave them be.

Imagine if someone started cutting your bedroom hedge with a power tool whilst you were asleep - you’d wake up and leave too! So a daytime hedgehog isn’t always ill.

Hopefully yours has had a rest after his close call and has now gone home for a nap 😀

[https://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/found-a-hedgehog/]

If you see him again and think he needs help, there’s a number here where they might know of a local rescue near you.
Where are you, roughly ?

TwoMonthsOff · 18/07/2022 18:31

@Lonelycrab
fantastic thank you - I just spoke to them and she has reassured me a lot she said they like swimming in ponds to cool off ….I didn’t realise that and obviously the net foiled him. She said leave a plank in ponds for them to climb up (if you don’t have a net)
and she said as he has moved off he is probably fine and not to worry

OP posts:
TwoMonthsOff · 18/07/2022 18:34

@Gribbit987
yes they have been here four years now and this time of year always appear around seven pm plus one got disturbed last summer by neighbours hedgecutter - saw a post on here last night of some out in daylight it was the thread urging to leave drinks out for them

Aww you are so lucky to have hedgehogs. They used to be everywhere when I was a child but now I have lived in my house for 17 years and only ever seen 2, one in the middle of the night crossing the road 😔and one once came into our house in broad daylight - I'm not sure he was all that well. Both those sightings were years ago now. We have a few foxes, plenty of bats, squirrels, frogs, newts and slow worms, but no hedgehogs. I'm glad yours recovered from its swim.

Cleebope2 · 13/08/2022 21:02

Lovely to see he survived. We used to have 3 but none now since 2020 sadly. Keep looking after your brood.

TwoMonthsOff · 13/08/2022 21:05

@Beefilm
well, that could be a blessing in disguise ! In this weather I can’t leave any of the doors open in the evening at the back they come in the kitchen regularly (after cat food) and I really have to look around before closing up for the night, had one in the living room as well, bit worrying as I don’t want one trapped behind the sofa…they also need feeding they eat loads, luckily the NDN one side feeds them too.
seems that there are a lot more sightings these days or perhaps people are becoming more aware which is nice 🦔
I was so happy when I saw him again last week, he’s very distinctive due to his large size and colouring and I can see where his spines are a bit disturbed where we had to cut the net off him, poor old thing 🦔🦔

AlmostAJillSandwich · 13/08/2022 21:10

Oh how brilliant that he is alive and well Grin

BeenHereForYonkyDoodles · 13/08/2022 21:12

Managed to miss this first time round but what a lovely update! I'm so pleased he's ok.
I'm also just off to pop a board in our pond......

TwoMonthsOff · 13/08/2022 21:28

@BeenHereForYonkyDoodles
That is what the lady I spoke to at the rescue recommended
I hear they drown in swimming pools too which is so sad

TwoMonthsOff · 13/08/2022 21:30

it’s a good day 😍

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 13/08/2022 21:35

Such a lovely update OP.

It's so wonderful that you and your neighbours feed them. We used to have them in out garden, but it's been years since I've seen one. Even the squirrels are getting scarce now.
