Mad to have sports day today, isn't it?

yesitssea · 18/07/2022 12:00

Am I being funny or should it be cancelled?

I'm not a sun lover so I don't know if I am being unfair.

Daughter (10) has sports day 1-3pm today. I am dreading it.

Am I being over the top or is 2h in 30 degree heat not ok? I wouldn't even stay out in the sun that long on holiday.

That’s madness! I wouldn’t send my daughter in for that.

LynneBenfield · 18/07/2022 12:01

YANBU. It’s crazy, a lot of schools aren’t even opening today.

ComDummings · 18/07/2022 12:01

That’s not acceptable and I would be removing my child from it and letting the school know why.

RudsyFarmer · 18/07/2022 12:02

That is complete madness

Plasmodesmata · 18/07/2022 12:03

It should be cancelled. Official advice (never mind just common sense) says:
"The Department of Health and Social Care recommends children should not take part in vigorous physical activity on very hot days, such as when temperatures are in excess of 30°C."

LynneBenfield · 18/07/2022 12:03

It’s not just the being outside, it’s encouraging kids to be outside, exerting themselves during a red warning heatwave.

BiscoffSundae · 18/07/2022 12:14

My daughter InReception was meant to have hers today but they cancelled it

Quia · 18/07/2022 12:18

Send the school that Department of Health advice and ask them to confirm that Sports Day is cancelled. If they don't, contact the Chair of governors and Head and ask if they have checked this with their insurance company.

And ask for a copy of the risk assessment, thst tends to focus minds when there isn’t one

Definitely not safe - between 12 and 3 is the hottest part of any sunny day, let alone these extraordinary days.

Coldnoseandtoes · 18/07/2022 12:22

It's too warm, especially in the midday sun. I don't know what your school is like obviously, but ours has no shade at all for the kids during apirts day, so I wouldn't really want mine to be sitting about waiting on races etc.

Yamyam13 · 18/07/2022 12:22

Ours was supposed to be today - cancelled last week as soon as they saw the forecast.

Harridance · 18/07/2022 12:23

I've just cycled past a sports day in my local park, they were having a great time

I dreaded Sports Days, as did all my kids . .

YANBU
In Heat like Today's it should indeed be cancelled or postponed.

MinnieMountain · 18/07/2022 12:27

Crazy.
DS’s school have moved theirs from tomorrow to Friday.

spiderlight · 18/07/2022 12:29

Our school (secondary) has moved sports day twice as the forecast has developed - from today to tomorrow, and then to Wednesday. I had already decided that I would not be sending DS in if they'd had it today or tomorrow.

CecilyP · 18/07/2022 12:30

It should be cancelled! Ours are often cancelled or postponed because of the rain so this is similar in the other direction!

Pigsears · 18/07/2022 12:30

No.

My kids school had there's a couple of weeks ago. They sat in the sun. Told they weren't allowed hats.

Some schools just don't think- and the whole 'no hats on sports day' really showed me just how rubbish my kids school was with any sort of 'sun smart message'. So I wouldn't trust them on hotter days.

In countries where this heat is normal, I'm sure sports day on a day like today would have been cancelled or held earlier in the day, sun hats and sunscreen totally standard and they would be allowed to drink when they are thirsty and encouraged to drink before they are thirsty.

Arenanewbie · 18/07/2022 12:32

It is madness, hope you or someone else contacted school and it’s cancelled.

TokyoTen · 18/07/2022 12:35

That's bonkers! I'm a sun lover and don't mind the heat but kids running around from 1pm - 3pm is crazy!

Jowak1 · 18/07/2022 12:36

My sons sports day was scheduled for tomorrow but they have changed it to Thursday. I think they are asking for trouble if they don't move them from the hottest days of the year!

Theladybirdthatsaidboo · 18/07/2022 12:37

It’s not mad it’s plain dangerous and irresponsible and I’d go and collect my child at lunchtime. I fully support schools being open, but they ought to be sensible and heed official advice.

CandyCaneLane0 · 18/07/2022 12:47

Ds's is tomorrow, I'm really hoping they cancel it

caringcarer · 18/07/2022 12:53

Id keep her home.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 18/07/2022 12:54

That's just dangerous.

All our local schools have cancelled trips and PE today, and we're not even in the red zone! It's just common sense.

I was dripping sweat walking the dog at 7am this morning and it wasn't even that hot, maybe 18-19 degrees?
