Mad to have sports day today, isn't it?

Am I being funny or should it be cancelled?

I'm not a sun lover so I don't know if I am being unfair.

Daughter (10) has sports day 1-3pm today. I am dreading it.

Am I being over the top or is 2h in 30 degree heat not ok? I wouldn't even stay out in the sun that long on holiday.

If you’re in Lerwick where it’s forecast to be 14 degrees YABU. If you’re anywhere in England and Wales, YA also BU: it’s not ‘mad’, it’s actively dangerous. Definitely take the suggestions upthread to ask re risk assessment, contact governors etc and if all else fails just take her out of school.

Grumpybutfunny · 18/07/2022 13:00

I'm currently sat in a bikini and have spent the day floating round the padding pool. We love the heat but nope not a UK sports day sure if they were playing water polo or water based games I could see it go ahead but not a normal sports day in this heat

Beautiful3 · 18/07/2022 13:16

Ours was scheduled for today, but it's been cancelled due to the high temperature. Crazy yours is still going ahead!

I've just cycled past a sports day in my local park, they were having a great time

And how many of them are going to end up with overheating problems, dehydration or sunburn?

It's not about the fun, it's about health care. Telling kids to run as fast as they can in this heat is a very bad idea.

Harridance · 18/07/2022 13:47

Steakcut, don't know, maybe none? They were all in the shade.

FusionChefGeoff · 18/07/2022 13:55

No way would I let my DC take part in sports day today that's fucking insane

Harridance · 18/07/2022 14:09

Like I say, they seemed to be having a hood time, lots of whooping and cheering

Steakcut, don't know, maybe none? They were all in the shade.

You're telling me that the whole park is in the shade, it's 25 degrees or less and there's no running around?

I don't believe you.

Whatwouldscullydo · 18/07/2022 14:49

Thats crazy.

I was cursing the constant emails from 2 schools of hot weather updates and the gazillion risk assessments that they have done.

I apologise to both schools now because at least they are clearly far more mindful of their students and want to reassure parents and pupils alike. Its definitely preferable to running a sports day.

Craver · 18/07/2022 14:51

Headteacher criminally liable when anything goes wrong as it is against advice.

Loics · 18/07/2022 14:54

YANBU, mine are only at nursery, and before they broke up for summer they wouldn't let them out to play in this heat - and that's under 3s toddling around, no strenuous activity! A sports day is madness.

mumda · 18/07/2022 15:10

School on the news this morning is having sports day. Changes ... including a wet t-shirt com. They're going to put on frozen t-shirts.

ThreeLittleDots · 18/07/2022 15:12

Twattish heads will think that's ok with suncream, hats and water bottles 🙄

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 18/07/2022 15:20

My dd's athletics club has cancelled training for the week - if it is too hot for actual athletes then absolutely no way should little kids being running in it.

Madcats · 18/07/2022 18:30

As far as I can tell, the Junior School opposite me switched things about so that the kids ran about and played first thing until about 10, then stayed indoors all day.

Luckily their classroom windows are either under tree cover or face north and west.

yesitssea · 18/07/2022 19:40

We went to sports day. They had two shade tents set up.... for the teachers.

The kids sat in lines in the blaring sun (with hats on) and it finished slightly early (1.5h instead of 2).

I took my daughter home after her race as she is autistic and was on the verge of meltdown. God knows how other kids managed.

It's still 32 here now.

The head teacher has sent a quite defiant email out saying 'it's hard to cancel events... but the kids had a ice lolly waiting for them at the end...' wtf?

Glencanto · 18/07/2022 19:44

That’s absolutely nuts. I’d be complaining.

SunnyNights · 18/07/2022 19:47

Shade tents for the teachers not children?! Wtf!

HelloThereObiWan · 18/07/2022 19:54

Oh god those poor kids. I hope lots of parents complain. I put p20 factor 50 suncream on my ginger DS and he still burns slightly with that when he's at school and the weather is like this. And that's with him only being out for breaks etc. It's not enough to put suncream on in the morning and hope for the best, totally irresponsible!

balalake · 18/07/2022 19:59

I suggest complaining to the Governors. Perhaps copy to the HSE if schools are within their remit.

I wonder if sports day at the end of September would be better in any case, it still being light enough, not too hot, but also having a non-academic event in the long slog of the autumn term.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 18/07/2022 20:05

That’s awful, I’d have kept mine home.

Sounds cruel — shade tents for staff, kids in blazing heat Sad

DottyLittleRainbow · 18/07/2022 20:09

That’s absolutely insane. And shade tents for just the teachers wtf?!

Make a massive complaint!!

itsgettingweird · 18/07/2022 20:16

We are south coast. Not even in the red zone and so was 29/30° this afternoon.

We cancelled

JudgeRindersMinder · 18/07/2022 20:23

Why would you even allow your child to take part? While parents accept these bonkers decisions, idiot head teachers will keep making them
