So take 3 of my DC to school and on the way back bump into a mum getting her kids in the car. She was all excited and announced to me that surely I haven’t sent my DC into school today with the heat. At which I say yes of course they have plenty of water and the teachers have said they will monitor and gear lessons around the heat etc. said I was confident in the school. At which the mum said OMG your crazy this heat is so dangerous no way are my two going into school we are off to the beach to keep cool with two other parents and kids. !!! I told her she was the crazy one exposing her kids to the heat at the beach. She took the hump and said they will go in the sea to keep cool and if I had any sense I would collect my kids and do the same. Speechless to say the least.
should I have challenge her. She was very miffed.

So she hasn’t taken her kids to school because of the heat, but has taken them to the beach instead. 🙄

Unanananana · 18/07/2022 09:19

Anyone that goes to the beach today is a moron. NHS is already struggling and inevitably there will be a shit ton of people going to A&E with heatstroke/sunstroke.

I wouldn't have called crazy to her face though. She'll learn the hard way.

Annoyedwithmyself · 18/07/2022 09:21

I don't think it needed escalating by you calling her crazy but yes, more risk at the beach where there's limited shade and they'll be presumably more exposed unless fully covered up when swimming.

Ohshitiveturnedintomymother · 18/07/2022 09:24

We’re on holiday in England at the moment and are on the beach right now. We have two UV beach tents and the kids are in factor 50 and UV sun suits. We are cooling off in the water and will make sure they kids have time in the tents to get out of the sun.
there’s a lovely breeze here and it feels much cooler than the forecasted 35 so I think we’ll be ok.
we’re also 5 mins walk back to the cottage so can nip home 1-3 when the sun is at its hottest so baby can nap.
it is however significantly cooler here than it would be in a classroom, I know this because I am a teacher and I know how got my room is on a normal hot day.

HikingforScenery · 18/07/2022 09:24

breathe
Two more days, two more days ( or is it one?)
exhale

picklemewalnuts · 18/07/2022 09:24

Cooler because of the sea breeze and water to cool off. Higher risk of burning for the same reason. Hard to carry enough water for a family, too.

The journey is a big risk. If you hit a jam or breakdown, that's pretty scary.

JanJanBillyBearHam · 18/07/2022 09:27

There's a lot of privilege to the 'kids should not be in school' argument. If the alternative is a high rise flat with windows that barely open, no garden or possibly abuse then no, school is safer.

KilmordenCastle · 18/07/2022 09:28

I've kept mine off today. The school has said they will take it as an authorised absence and I'm lucky to be in a position to have the choice of keeping them home.

It's going to be 40 degrees here today and tomorrow. The only time my dc's will be stepping out of the house is to cool off in the paddling pool (in the shade) for a bit then back into the house.

This weather is dangerous if you're not sensible. No doubt there will be plenty of idiots heading to the beach or beer gardens to "enjoy the sun" 🙄 fair enough if you're not in the hottest places, I know not everywhere in the UK is going to be 40 degrees. But (in the red zone) spending time outdoors during the hottest part of the day when you don't have to is lunacy. I feel so sorry for the poor dc's who are dragged out to burn in the sun 😔

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 18/07/2022 09:31

Mine have gone in to school but if they hadn't I wouldn't be taking them out to the beach in this

sallladfiingers · 18/07/2022 09:31

Mine are in school, they've hired a gazebo and tied parachutes to the trees to create shaded areas. They will have regular breaks for drinks and toilet visits and go outside for fresh air for short periods.

I would understand parents keeping their kids at home to play in the garden/paddling pool and keep cool in the house, and feel more in control of the situation.
Don't understand anyone going to the beach but claiming school is unsafe.

Some people are getting caught up in the hysteria and forgetting that many of us go on holidays abroad where this weather is normal and we sit at the pool or on the beach in this heat every day.

The UK is not built for these temperatures on a regular basis, so it's uncomfortable, but it's really not 'dangerous' if people are sensible.

Wear plenty of sun cream and keep it topped up, wear a hat, take a pop up tent for kids, don't stay outside for too long, drink plenty of water etc.........

But the woman is a idiot for claiming school is unsafe then going to the beach.

To be fair though it is going to feel cooler given it's only 9.30 in the morning.

Soubriquet · 18/07/2022 09:33

I’ve kept my two off but they are currently in the paddling pool.

They will come in at 10 and will be allowed back in at 4.

MyrrAgain · 18/07/2022 09:35

If they’re driving there etc then I agree it's a big risk and not cooler. The car could hit traffic, break down etc. Kids going to be running around out in the sun all day etc. The person with the uv tents above has the right idea but they are also a few minutes walk from home so less risk overall.

Yanbu.

Sceptre86 · 18/07/2022 09:36

She's an idiot if she's taking them to the beach at the hottest part of the day. Covid rates are already sky high and loads of people congregating at the beach will only make it worse. Several of those idiots won't use suncream or drink enough and will end up in hospital putting pressure on services already at breaking point.

That being said unless your school is making adjustments to uniform regulations then being sat in a hot classroom isn't ideal either. It's six and half a dozen to be honest.

What's so bad about the beach if you've got sunscreen etc? I'm on the beach in Spain right now and it's 36 degrees or thereabouts and nobody thinks that's insane 🤷🏻‍♀️

Newcastlegirl · 18/07/2022 09:39

Wondering what everyone does when they go on holiday? Do you all hide in the air conditioned apartment until the sun goes down?

Personally I agree with you sending your kids to school OP. If it becomes an issue school will call parents.

But, equally, there isn’t anything wrong with going to the beach or being in a paddling pool in this weather if people are sensible.

DockOTheBay · 18/07/2022 09:40

Covid rates are already sky high and loads of people congregating at the beach will only make it worse
🤣Have we gone back in time to July 2020??
It was pretty obvious even then that going to the beach wasn't impacting covid rates. I don't think OP was even considering covid when she wrote this post, more likely thinking about the risk of sunburn, heat stroke and dehydration - which are a higher risk to kids than covid.

Topseyt123 · 18/07/2022 09:41

You are entitled to your view, and I have to say that if I still had school age children I would still have sent them into school today, with plenty of fluids just as you have done.

You were both silly to call each other crazy though. Unnecessarily confrontational in my opinion.

maddy68 · 18/07/2022 09:41

Does it matter? She's doing what she thinks is right (and they can cool off in the sea). You're doing what you think Is right.

Noone is wrong here

TheFridayRabbit · 18/07/2022 09:43

It’s just rude. Why can’t she just say, “Good luck for staying cool, it’ll be a relief when we’re through this.” Why do people have to one up all the time?!

Monoandsix · 18/07/2022 09:45

I live in NE Wales and the roads yesterday were like car parks with every idiot trying to get to the coast.

Thanks Einstein. I hadn’t thought of that!

obviously it’s early 🙄 so cooler but it’s still cooler than the forecast and very pleasant.

ahhh but according to MN it’s somehow much hotter in England than anywhere else, and it’s not the same.

I agree with you btw, if on holiday we’d be on the beach/by the pool so why not here?

stepmad · 18/07/2022 09:48

I am currently at a station in Kent I have no choice but to travel. However so many people with young children on the coast bound platform complete with bucket and spades.
At least in school there is shade

Topseyt123 · 18/07/2022 09:50

Covid rates are already sky high and loads of people congregating at the beach will only make it worse.

Covid has bugger all to do with it, and going to the beach has very little impact on transmission, if any at all. Most transmission happens in enclosed indoor areas.

Your point about people not drinking enough fluid or u
