So take 3 of my DC to school and on the way back bump into a mum getting her kids in the car. She was all excited and announced to me that surely I haven’t sent my DC into school today with the heat. At which I say yes of course they have plenty of water and the teachers have said they will monitor and gear lessons around the heat etc. said I was confident in the school. At which the mum said OMG your crazy this heat is so dangerous no way are my two going into school we are off to the beach to keep cool with two other parents and kids. !!! I told her she was the crazy one exposing her kids to the heat at the beach. She took the hump and said they will go in the sea to keep cool and if I had any sense I would collect my kids and do the same. Speechless to say the least.
should I have challenge her. She was very miffed.

Covid rates are already sky high and loads of people congregating at the beach will only make it worse

Time warp, do people still actually believe this crap??

User539280 · 18/07/2022 11:18

I imagine the beach is very pleasant this morning, it's 29 in my back garden and probably cooler on most beaches

drawacircleroundit · 18/07/2022 11:21

She's being effervescent because she knows she's being ridiculous and was hoping you would join in with her fantasy-justification.
Parents like this raise entitled kids who will use any justification, however far-fetched, to excuse decisions made entirely on their insatiable need for drama and fun. I teach and see this daily. Prom saw the presence of many students who had been off long-term with anxiety, for example. But the prom is their right, it will help their self-esteem, it's a once in a lifetime chance... like education, but less work, of course.

I am in Oz where we have frequent 40-plus days every summer. And I love the heat and the beach! But when it's that hot I go early in the morning, or mid-afternoon onwards, it's crazy to go all day, especially if you aren't used to it. That kind of heat can really fuck you up!

AllThatAndMore · 18/07/2022 11:29

We went to the beach yesterday and felt the heat worse than we currently are today (inside with fans on us ) . The water at the beach was lovely and cooling BUT the kids didn’t want to stay in long . They preferred to play in the sand.

I don’t think the mum was unreasonable to go the beach ( though parking will be a bitch lol) and I don’t think you were unreasonable to send your kids to school .

My kids are not school age but I would send them into school if they were.

At the beach you can cool off in the sea and there tends to be a breeze so in general I don’t think it a bad idea.

Im more like we have 6 weeks of DC being off school so if school is open you’re going! That’s the crazy part to me!

It’s not too hot to go to school, the parent can’t be arsed and has convinced themselves it’s “dangerous”

She called you crazy so why can’t you call her crazy??! She sounds like a “say it as I see it (but that’s only ok when it’s me giving it out, I can’t take it back)”

Choopi · 18/07/2022 11:43

In a few years time when your kids are older you will look back and cringe at these type of parenting pissing contests. Your kids will have a nice day at school, her kids will have a nice day at the beach and it's all really insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Does it matter? She's doing what she thinks is right (and they can cool off in the sea). You're doing what you think Is right.

Noone is wrong here

Totally This

ItsAllInMyHeadImFuckingUpAgain · 18/07/2022 12:35

Hahaha. The woman's mad!!
My children are at home with me. Curtains/blinds closed and our fan on. I'd rather not be at the beach right now.

Harridance · 18/07/2022 12:40

Friendly pineapple, agree, the beach is a great place to be

Thepeopleversuswork · 18/07/2022 12:42

Drama feeding off itself for its own sake.

Both of you are being pathetic. Neither of you is objectively wrong or right and there are risks associated with both.

Its not the beach per se that's dangerous (unless you don't have any sunscreen or drink any water), its the journey down but for most people it will be fine. By the same token being in a hot classroom without air/con with 29 other kids isn't ideal but healthy kids operating in a sensible environment will be fine. Its six of one and half a dozen of the other.

You're both being hysterical and need to get out more tbh.

CulturePigeon · 18/07/2022 13:08

Some people are competitive to a pathological degree so that EVERY choice they make has to be the best. People making other choices are clearly stupid, from their perspective.

I live in a pretty affluent and competitive area and this is the default attitude for a lot of people.

Highfivemum · 18/07/2022 15:50

Collected my DC and all three are cool. Teacher made them drink water all day and only went outside in turns under the covered shelter. Still feel they better off than on an exposed beach but each to there own. Xx

Well, I’m sure her kids had a good day to you.

You sound very judgemental and superior.

Anonymous48 · 18/07/2022 16:22

I don't think there's anything wrong with going to the beach on a day like today, provided:

  • everyone drinks lots of water

  • everyone wears and reapplies lots of high factor sunscreen

  • everyone wears hats and rash guards

  • everyone spends most of the time in the water

Two mothers have different opinions on what is best for their children? As you were......

Because the British public in general have no clue what impact this sort of hot weather has because it happens so rarely. They go to the beaches ill-prepared.

A lot of the British public go to hot countries on holiday though? I wonder if they behave differently there?

Schools round here chucked kids out at 1.15 today - I saw them all wandering round town this afternoon, I'm not sure they were any cooler or more protected than they would have been at school!

And I'd rather eat my own eyeballs than hide inside my house with the curtains closed because it's hot.

broughtitbutneedgone · 18/07/2022 21:57

Surely people jet off to Europe in July ajd go to the beach dont they?

It's cooler on the coast
The sea keeps you cool
Hats, suncream and parasols all
Help

FriendlyPineapple · 19/07/2022 08:19

Oh but in Britain it's TROPIC-HELL TUESDAY according to the trashy press and people have been terrified into staying indoors all day with their curtains shut. It's embarrassing really.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 19/07/2022 08:25

Well I'm definitely not terrified but I'm only going out in it if I have to

Currently on holiday in Suffolk. Today we’re at the beach in Walberswick which is 24 degrees right now, high of 27 forecast. That’s 10 degrees lower than the (air conditioned with a private pool) place we’re staying. Everyone here has hats, suncream, water… Alternative is being home in London and sending DS to nursery to swelter…

but yes, people going to the beach are morons 🙄

Ahh lucky you...one of my favourite places...for my birthday my dh rented a holiday cottage right next to the water...next to Richard Curtis 's holiday home.
