To go to a job interview off my face on codeine?

Mxflamingnoravera · 18/07/2022 07:51

My back went into spasm on Friday, it's sciatica, my right leg is in such pain that I can't walk on it. I'm unemployed and I have a job interview in a city 12 miles away, I have co-codomol and diazepam from the doc from a call on Friday, they make me sound like a junkie. This job is one I can do and have done for years and I need it. But I can't drive in this state, I can't even walk.

I can get a cab there and back but can't walk (only hobble) from the cab. It's in education so they'll say if I can't make it- tough, they'll appoint from those who can make it.

I'm stuck, I need the job. Do I go, apologise for being off my face and brazen it through, ask for a postponement (no guarantee it will improve in the near future though). Do I ask for a zoom interview? Or just lose the best chance I have of a job I can do? It's been three months since I left my last job so I need this job.

I'm in tears with the pain this morning. Waiting for my meds to kick in right now, but I know I can't drive with this cocktail inside me.

Ffs what do I do?

YAIBU - suck it up and explain
YANBU- ask for adjustments and risk them saying no

What a trooper you are OP, best of luck for part 2!

Dustyblue · 19/07/2022 07:11

Oh and as for sciatica- they only thing that cured mine when it was bad was Lyrica/Pregabalin. But it takes weeks to work so useless in your situation.

Good luck xx

Go for it. I had an interview yesterday but forgot about it until 90 mins beforehand. In the meantime I’d had two cans of cider in the garden…classy 😂 Let’s see how that one goes. Definitely picked a good week for annual leave but for job interviews i’m not so sure!

It’s a painkiller not cocaine, calm down. You’re not of your face. Do you get high on paracetamol too?

Codeine is an opiate. Like Morphine, Vicodin and Fentanyl. Paracetamol is an analgesic (and antipyretic).

The two aren’t particularly comparable.

Prezperez · 19/07/2022 07:29

Good luck OP!

figmaofmyimagination · 19/07/2022 07:31

Ah you poor thing, you certainly deserve to get it after all that!

Mxflamingnoravera · 19/07/2022 07:57

I've woken this morning and pain in my leg is as bad as ever. I've taken the diazepam and neurofen plus, I'll take the tramadol after the activity is done, I can't risk falling asleep during the test.

I also have some Amitriptyline but scared to take it because it wipes me out. Does anyone else find this?

So far the pain has not abated at all this morning (it is in my right leg below the knee). I'm doing stretches but they hurt like hell.

I have a temp job at the moMent but I think I need to end it, I'm neither use nor ornament at the moment. As you can see from this post I can barely type.

You might actually do really well in the interview as you probably won't be nervous thanks to the drugs which is the biggest barrier to performance.

picklemewalnuts · 19/07/2022 08:07

Amitriptyline is usually taken regularly. The side effects wear off after a week or so. Best to start to take it when you have a quiet few days.

I wouldn't be without it. If you've been prescribed it, do take it- but not on an ad hoc basis!

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 19/07/2022 13:10

I take Amitriptyline and can only take it at bedtime, I couldn’t function on it in the day.

good luck!

xyzabchij · 19/07/2022 13:21

Be mindful with the tramadol it can make you hallucinate. Don't panic if it happens. Happened to me after giving birth.

Mine says to take it an hour before bed... anyone else I’ve known to take it has had the same instructions.

Though I can take mine and still be up doing things well after an hour later - I’m clearly not affected by anything much, lol, good job they work on the pain or I’d be a bit stuffed.

Hi. I have regular slipped discs, had surgery and still have different ones herniate but the resolve can take 6 months now with 2-3 months of acute pain at the start each time but I know what to do- hit it hard

At the start it is the burning fire nerve pain that's worst- you can talk to your GP for gabapentine which helps so much with nerve pain(gps start you low but you can have up to 3600mg gabapentin a day over 3 doses. I usually am great of 900mg a day )

Co codomol 30/500 is what I found best with gabapentin - but does wipe you out

It's important to keep moving little and often and think of resting/laying in a slight V shape (legs slightly raised, back slightly raised). So for eg laying on a sofa with legs up one end and slightly propped up back the other end is exactly what you're aiming for.

Little movements in physio is what helped me once the acute phase has settled
So look up "keeping a neutral spine" on you tube and also Feldenkrais project. You have to listen to the vague bits at beginning (lots of annoying breathing stuff) but it's the exercises you want on walking, easier sitting

You can buy great sticks from Amazon , better than crutches which have a sturdy base that manoeuvres so it makes it easier to lean on (when your back is leaning you forward!) and be stable

£16 each (btw the lights never last long but the sticks are well worth it!)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07GWRN93D/ref=cmswwrapiiiT59MRZRX4TNN5BS1R5DTT1?encoding=UTF8&psc=1

For future, If you do get the job make sure you get a good DSE assessed chair and work station assessment. None of this sitting on child size chairs nonsense , You need to look after your spine.
