To go to a job interview off my face on codeine?

Mxflamingnoravera · 18/07/2022 07:51

My back went into spasm on Friday, it's sciatica, my right leg is in such pain that I can't walk on it. I'm unemployed and I have a job interview in a city 12 miles away, I have co-codomol and diazepam from the doc from a call on Friday, they make me sound like a junkie. This job is one I can do and have done for years and I need it. But I can't drive in this state, I can't even walk.

I can get a cab there and back but can't walk (only hobble) from the cab. It's in education so they'll say if I can't make it- tough, they'll appoint from those who can make it.

I'm stuck, I need the job. Do I go, apologise for being off my face and brazen it through, ask for a postponement (no guarantee it will improve in the near future though). Do I ask for a zoom interview? Or just lose the best chance I have of a job I can do? It's been three months since I left my last job so I need this job.

I'm in tears with the pain this morning. Waiting for my meds to kick in right now, but I know I can't drive with this cocktail inside me.

Ffs what do I do?

YAIBU - suck it up and explain
YANBU- ask for adjustments and risk them saying no

One of the competencies is resilience, so I hope I get 10/10 for that!

And I meant neurofen plus, not whatever nonesense I wrote earlier!

Good luck OP! Fingers crossed they're sympathetic and move it to zoom. But if not, go in there and smash it.

Mxflamingnoravera · 18/07/2022 10:29

They've moved it to zoom! Result!

It’s a painkiller not cocaine, calm down. You’re not of your face. Do you get high on paracetamol too?

Have you any idea what 60mg of codeine feels like? 🤣

Mxflamingnoravera · 18/07/2022 10:35

It's codeine. It makes me slow and slurry. Have you ever taken 60mg codeine at the same time as Valium? If not then you wouldn't understand.

It's codeine, not bloody calpol.

Great news re Zoom

Best of luck for your interview and I hope you feel better soon x

RockinHorseShit · 18/07/2022 10:47

Honestly yes, go. I actually got a very much sort after job after turning up for an interview in circumstances most would have cancelled for. I'd had no sleep at all & was stressed to hell as I'd had an emergency all night vets run with my cat. There was a short list of 4 people, I got the job because I'd proven myself to be more than reliable at the interview

drawacircleroundit · 18/07/2022 11:14

I'm a much MUCH nicer person when on codeine and diazepam.
This isn't any help, I know. Best of luck, though Flowers

beautyisthefaceisee · 18/07/2022 11:15

Well done. And good luck!

sallladfiingers · 18/07/2022 11:19

I would phone ahead and explain the situation.

You could tell them you don't want to cancel, you are confident you can interview, but you wanted them to be aware that you might be suffering side effects of medication you are taking for an injury.

See whether they suggest a video interview or even offer another day.

Shit happens, you will look better for being resilient and trying to power through !

Says someone who has never in their life taken either codeine or diazepam. Let alone the both together!

Or just wasn’t that affected like that by them... I’ve been on both together and fine.

The only thing that means I don’t function normally is morphine tbh, anything less and I’m able to go to work and do everything fine.

I do know not everyone finds that, but it’s easy enough to assume everyone is the same if you don’t realise other people are more affected by them than you.

Mxflamingnoravera · 18/07/2022 11:44

@drawacircleroundit in normal circumstances I'd agree, but my tolerance for codeine at 60mg is not good- I get nausea and I speak like a junkie!

Two neurofen plus is my limit!
I'm necking jelly babies to get a sugar rush that I hope will counteract any drawl!

Interview at 1330, I'll find out by weds if I'm successful.

Then off to the dr at 4, she's worried I may have something serious pressing on my disc and sciatic nerve. She has mentioned hospital :(

Write down the key things you want to get across on post it’s around your screen.
explain about painkillers- offer follow up email with more detailed responses if you feel you’ve not said what you want to.
explain that this is a one off, and your work record. Good luck!

NortieTortie · 18/07/2022 11:52

Good luck!!

AlwaysAuntie · 18/07/2022 12:00

@Mxflamingnoravera good luck for the interview, so glad they were able to reschedule for Zoom interview. Interviews are stressful enough without being in pain or on medication that makes you act drunk.

Write down some notes to help keep you on track.

I think everyone reacts differently

And yes I've had both, 60mg four times daily plus diazepam and was fine and able to work normally. But some people are more affected

spiderlight · 18/07/2022 12:22

Good luck and I hope your pain eases soon.

JustAnotherViper · 18/07/2022 14:53

I hope it went well

Mxflamingnoravera · 18/07/2022 19:43

Well it all went ahead, I think I did ok. But there is a second part which I wasn't aware of. So I'm doing it at 0830 tomorrow.

I saw the dr after the interview. She has replaced Co-codomol with tramadol. I took one and fell immediately into a deep sleep.

Second part of my interview to do first thing tomorrow. I hope I can think clearly through tramadol fog.

That's everyone for your support today

Vera
