Anyone going to work in a very hot/no aircon environment tomorrow?

fatlazycow · 17/07/2022 22:26

I am working in resturaunt kitchens tomorrow 🥵 DH fixes machinery in a non-aircon environment and has to wear quite a thick hot uniform so feeling sorry for ourselves at the moment as we are in the area predicted 40 Degrees.

I feel particularly bad for hospital staff though, no idea how they will cope 😔

Solidarity with anyone else going into an environment tomorrow that will make the heat seem 100x worse 😓

I wish it wasn't true but unfortunately it is..their reasoning is the fans spread covid???? We haven't had a covid outbreak for over 8 months now (touch wood!!!!). But yes we get absolutely bollocked if we dare to put the fans on. While they all sit there in their well conditioned rooms. Roll on Tuesday the hottest day? We won't be taking any shit 👌😂

Sorry your manager is wrong !! There is absolutely no rationale for disallowing fans ! Report the home to CQC .
I wonder what your homes absence rate will be Mon/ Tuesday 🤔
For context ,our home is allowing staff to wear whatever is comfortable to work effectively in ,fans everywhere…we don’t have Covid in the home , a freezer full of ice creams, lollies and a manager who will be hands on ,smiley and respects every single me,ber of staff !!

phlebasconsidered · 18/07/2022 06:23

32 kids and me in a classroom designed for 25 with no air con, no through breeze and one window that opens 2 inches. The room is about 5 degrees hotter than outside.

So looking forward to the parental complaints that I "let" the child get heatstroke.

ShriekingShack · 18/07/2022 06:24

Good luck everyone. Stay hydrated.

MrsDThomas · 18/07/2022 06:28

locak government office built in 1970’s. No aircon (imagine the uproar if public money was spent on that eh)

desk fan does the job

KilmordenCastle · 18/07/2022 06:43

I'll be working in a restaurant but thankfully in the (sort of) air conditioned front of house.

I'm really going to be fighting to pace things for the chefs over the next couple of days. It's always about making money, money, money but I'll be putting pressure on management that we have to turn customers away if need be to make sure the chefs aren't working too hard. It's unbearably hot in the kitchen once the temperature outside reaches about 26c so it's going to be hell on earth atm. I'm really worried about the chefs, if management aren't careful they will have some seriously unwell people on their hands.

iwishiwasonhol · 18/07/2022 06:54

I have the best job ever when the weather is like this working the chilled /frozen section in a supermarket

whiteroseredrose · 18/07/2022 06:56

I feel bad whinging about mine after some on here!

Glass office with unfortunately ineffective air con. We can WFH 3 days a week but there is a team meeting on Tuesday so we all have to come in boo hoo.

KatherineofGaunt · 18/07/2022 07:01

SEN teacher partly in mainstream classes, so yes, going to be hot and kids a bit stir crazy as no breaks outside after 11am!

At least I can wear what I want, though, and stay relatively still. I feel sorry for everyone having to wear any extra layers or move around outside today 😔

howshouldibehave · 18/07/2022 07:08

Teacher here in classroom of 30 with a wall of windows. The blinds don’t work and only a couple open. I slept really badly and have a banging headache. Let’s hope today goes quickly.

Londonnight · 18/07/2022 07:13

I work on a ward, no air conditioning. Uniform and masks. We do have fans spread out along the ward, but that's it. It is absolutely stifling!

I used to work in a very busy school kitchen and I know just how hot it can be, you have my sympathy having to work in that.

mac1974 · 18/07/2022 07:15

My DH runs a foundry 😭 he generally doesn't complain about how hot I can get but I don't think he's looking forward to it today & tomorrow. He will be exhausted

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 18/07/2022 07:18

I am working in the one hospital clinic that has air conditioning thank God. People often come in with maggots in their leg ulcers this time of year because they remove their bandaging in the heat.

WhatIsThisPlease · 18/07/2022 07:19

Yes. I only have to go in the office one day a week but my arsehole boss has decided I have to go in today.

No aircon. Office usually 5-6 degrees hotter than outside.

So cross when I could easily go in on Wednesday when it's cooler 😡

SpringIntoChaos · 18/07/2022 07:22

Yes...my classroom with 33 x VERY HOT six year olds!!

I only have one small window that opens about 4 inches due to 'health and safety' (we are on the ground floor...not quite sure how much damage it would cause falling less than 2 feet...it's a 'bottom opener' 🤦‍♀️☹️)

No outside door either! We are going to be super hot...I'm in Cambridge...42 predicted.

TheNinthLock · 18/07/2022 07:24

Upstairs classroom with one solid wall of windows adjacent to the roof of the school hall which is covered in black roofing material and sends heat straight back into my classroom. One small fan. 30 children. One pregnant teacher and one menopausal TA (me).

Predicted 38degrees here.

It could be worse.

Good luck to those in care homes, hospitals, retail and kitchens.

We can do this 🙂

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 18/07/2022 07:29

Firefighters

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/07/2022 07:30

yes
but it is the drive i am worried about
in the office we have plenty of fans, although of course it will still be difficult.

Anonaymoose · 18/07/2022 07:35

Dreading today. Veterinary hospital. 10 hour shift. Am in theatre all day where we have heaters on to prevent hypothermia in our anaesthetised patients. Tumble dryer going all day in prep area and masked up. Oh and I'm currently off my hrt and having about 50 hot flushes a day.

MenopauseSucks · 18/07/2022 07:41

@SucksToBeYouHun

The dementia home in which my mother lives, they have fans & air con however as residents keep getting Covid the home has gone into full lockdown & fans/air con are not allowed..,

Staff & families are not happy & have contacted head office but thems the rules...

They have done this since the start of the pandemic & their Covid death toll is very low.
They have measures in place to keep residents cool which seem to work although it's not been as hot.

The staff are bloody troopers, couldn't hope for better.
We're just going to have to hope for 7-day negative tests this morning 🤞🏻 & that they can switch it on!

DanielRicciardosSmile · 18/07/2022 07:42

I'm OK, but I'm very very worried about DH who will be doing a very manual job in the strongest sun at lunchtime. It's not necessary, and to my mind the company should have closed for both days and rearranged the jobs for the latter half of the week, but as always the bottom line is more important than the employees.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/07/2022 07:44

I worked all weekend. 12 hour shifts. And was supposed to be in today as my manager Had made a mistake with my off duty. I've got MS and struggle with heat so she let me have annual leave today. It's always over 30 on the ward anyway.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/07/2022 07:46

@fatlazycow hospital staff will cope because there is no other option!

honkeytonkwoman38 · 18/07/2022 07:51

There should be a law that prevents 31 week pregnant women from working in that heat tomorrow. Oh wait there is Health and Safety at Work Act. Don't do it!

RagzRebooted · 18/07/2022 07:53

Nurse, General Practice so not as bad as wards as I can take PPE off between patients and I have a fan. But my room has 2 south facing windows and 3 fridges kicking out heat. It was 30 degrees last week so dreading today.
I ordered scrubs, hoping they arrive today!

Really feeling for those on wards though, at least I can have a cold drink whenever I need one and frequent breaks.

I have the best job ever when the weather is like this working the chilled /frozen section in a supermarket

That really is the best! I bet all of the ice lollies will be in great demand!
