To ask people to please not quote post the OP?

Especially when it’s one that is multiple paragraphs. It goes as standard that you’re replying to the OP and it makes threads so painful to follow.

If people need to do quote posts can’t they just select the particular sentence or two that they’re querying/ responding to?

OP posts:

Or quotes the worlds longest post just to say 'this^'

Sparklingbrook · 17/07/2022 22:53

I have the @ function turned off so I don't get the notifications I've been 'tagged'. But generally if I am posting on and following a thread it doesn't matter.

sidheandlight · 17/07/2022 23:06

But you can't just easily quote a sentence or two from the OP or can you? For example if I hit quote - then go to give my reply, I can't delete any part of the OP quoted message that isn't relevant (am on a laptop). If I surround the sentence I am referring to in asterisks, to bold it so it looks quoted it only works 50% of the time for god knows what reason. It is quite a cumbersome site.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 17/07/2022 23:07

I would be content with posters just reading the op instead of frothing, jumping to conclusions and bashing on the keyboard. Better yet, if they read all of the op's responses. I am an optimistic 🤗

No, c&p doesn't always work on my android app 🤷‍♀️

Every time this thread is started posters think they are being witty or orignal to do exactly what the OP is complaining about

It was old the first time, boring on the 56th thread on the same subject

I agree that ik tedious on a phone to have to scroll past the OP numerous times.

Every time this thread is started……

The OP hasn’t been original and people moan on about this all the time, why should the replies be original?

EmeraldShamrock1 · 17/07/2022 23:12

It wrecks my brain when there are paragraphs of quotes.

I don't bother even trying to work it out anymore.

I hate when people quote a giant OP just to say “yabu”

literally brings nothing to the thread aside from endless scrolling

YABU

ThinWomansBrain · 17/07/2022 23:57

Its mddening - there was a thread the other day where the OP was long & ramblimg, & quoted over & over....

I do quote occasionally, but only where it's v short (and always a response, never the OP, however off-topic the thread has wandered.

Or just to say, "This". Really annoying!

chiffchaffchiff · 18/07/2022 08:24

It does annoy me a little when it's a very long first post and the conversation hasn't moved on. I see it a lot on the relationships posts where there's a long long backstory of several paragraphs and then someone responds as a quote with one line of "this isn't ok, you should leave him".

PickySlackTastic · 18/07/2022 08:32

YANBU

The extra scrolling doesn’t bother me, I just find it nonsensical. By default you are responding to the OP. It’s the one time where you wouldn’t use quote function.

JauntyJinty · 18/07/2022 08:36

I think what's far more annoying is when posters write a reply to someone somewhere on a thread, but don't quote or refernce who they're replying to

so you just have a post like:

"well what would you do in then?" With no context!

HRTQueen · 18/07/2022 08:36

Like this? I often try that but it is fiddly on my phone. This took two attempts. The quote function is a little easier but obviously takes the lot.

What would be handy (are you listening Mumsnet) would be the ability to edit quoted text. So using the quote function to get the text block you want and then trimming it to get just the bit you want

A580Hojas · 18/07/2022 09:00

Yes, a valid point that needs repeating again and again until people get it.

If you want to agree with someone you can now type @ and the first couple of letters of that poster's username and a list of names on the thread comes up for you to select from. This is a new feature I DO like! But it doesn't seem to stop people from quoting paragraphs of text just to say "agree" or whatever.

maddy68 · 18/07/2022 09:03

I like to see what the response is responding to

Roundtoedshoes · 18/07/2022 09:26

If anyone had to suffer the irritating take over of the ‘Can I just spend time with my DD with my DGPs and not DSS’ thread by a couple of posters who quoted every single time, then that’s reason enough for not doing it. I’ve never done it and find threads a much easier read without it, IMHO. Small quotes, fine. Endless paragraphs, no.
