when i complained in writing they claimed there is a firewall which 'should ensure any potential harmfull websites are not available'. They also say that the childrens' library is set apart from the rest of the library'

But the library is not big and my dc's will wonder out of the tiny unenclosed children's area. And also, the library staff on the front desk admitted to me that music videos wouldn't be covered by a firewall.

I am very that the library is somewhere i am not comfortable taking my children

Our local library has no censorship - the librarians are well aware that those who book on computer 8 think they are hidden away and are the ones most likely to view porn. What they forget is that you can move books and peep through the shelves and see exactly what they are up to...

Misdee · 17/01/2008 20:33

currently having similar aguement with dh. he likes 'flaunt' music channel, some videos and very suggestive, and i dont want themon when dd's are about, he see's nothing wrong with it though

Lauriefairycake · 17/01/2008 20:34

I don't like those inappropriate videos either however they are legal and they have just as much right to view them even if you or I might find them offensive.

Its your responsibility to make sure they only see what you are comfortable with them seeing (bearing in mind that offensiveness is entirely subjective).

Sorry

bracingair · 17/01/2008 20:34

oh dear. wish people would watch their dirty suff elsewhere.

i think it is unreasonable to be done in a library...particuarly straight after storytime!

OP posts:
bracingair · 17/01/2008 20:36

arent they rated? nothing over pg should be show in front of kids? i think the prob is they arent regulated.

OP posts:
bracingair · 17/01/2008 20:36

sorry should have written nothing over pg should be shown infront of kids. NO question mark

OP posts:
Lauriefairycake · 17/01/2008 20:37

yeah but they don't think it is dirty - they just assume if it was inappropriate the stuff wouldn't be accessible. The stuff you're talking about is probably (ridiculously) a 12 rating - if rated at all.

bracingair · 17/01/2008 20:39

You werent there. How do you know what it pobably is?

Desiderata · 17/01/2008 20:40

I understand your grievance, bracingair, but the world is made up of children and adults. At any given time (unless there's a school party in), there are more adults in a library than children.

They're entitled to do what they want within the bounds of the library's discretion.

FrannyandZooey · 17/01/2008 20:41

I read something yesterday about porn sites being accessed at computers in libraries

there was some impossible statistic about how many people are doing it - really odd don't you think?

Lauriefairycake · 17/01/2008 20:42

Just assuming they are all the same videos I said I didn't like either

Let me guess, rap? women dancing half naked?

If not, intrigued........

wannaBe · 17/01/2008 20:42

what exactly were they viewing?

in your title you said music videoes, so presumably nothing illegal. presumably the same sorts of things as might be shown on mtv or similar. so likely suggestive at worst?

bracingair · 17/01/2008 20:43

the fact that there are more adults doesnt mean you cater for the majority. That would mean alot more could be watched...

Re the ibrary's discretion - their staff who work at the desks admit that the music circumvents the firewall. The head of the library wont admit that.

OP posts:
bracingair · 17/01/2008 20:45

yes, was barely clothed and dancing in a very suggestive manner. Not anything i think preschoolers should be exposed to

OP posts:
Rhubarb · 17/01/2008 20:46

Ew! Just think of how many people have accessed those porn sites - all those germs kicking about! Their keyboards and chairs must be gross!

madamez · 17/01/2008 20:48

Why not fit all your children with blindfolds whenever you take them into a public place? Oh, and add earplugs as well. That way they will never see a scantily dressed man or hear a blasphemous word, or encounter anyone calling a customer service representative a c*, or experience anything unusual, ever.

wannaBe · 17/01/2008 20:50

but to children, they're just dancing. children that age don't understand suggestive in the way adults do. It's not illegal, it's probably not even rated - I don't think music videoes are rated are they?

And they are being viewed in the main bit of the library not the child bit, so it's simple really - just don't let the kids stray out of the child bit.

Desiderata · 17/01/2008 20:51

Oh, sorry ... I missed something important.

Since you asked ... YABU.

ravenAK · 17/01/2008 20:52

Have your pre-schoolers really got such a fantastic view of videos being watched on a computer monitor, at a desk above their sightline, with an adult plonked on a chair in front of it? Thought from your OP you meant that they were being shown on a big screen or something...

I can see why you'd prefer your dc not to watch them, but I don't think you can extend that to banning adult library users from accessing perfectly legal websites as part of the library's service.

bracingair · 17/01/2008 21:00

why the sarcasm desiderata?

whats it to do with legal? eg 12s are legal for 12 years old, but not for younger without parental consent.

As i said before, it is a very small library, so hard to contain my children in one spot.

OP posts:
wannaBe · 17/01/2008 21:06

people can watch music videoes on their mobile phones nowadays.

if you walk past an electrical store they often have mtv on.

the videoes in question would have been playing on a screen and someone would have been sitting in front of it. surely it's not that visible?

did your children notice? did they ask?

tbh you cannot protect them against everything, and seeing a half naked person dancing really isn't going to damage them.

mosschops30 · 17/01/2008 21:09

Ok first thing keep an eye on your child and make sure he/she doesnt 'wander out of the area'.

Secondly MTV and similar are horrendsouly censored and theres nothing on there that i would consider pornographic.

No i wouldnt sit ds down with his dinner to watch it but if he wandered past in an electrical store or library I wouldnt send him for counselling.

YABU and over-reacting IMHO

Desiderata · 17/01/2008 21:10

Why the sarcasm, bracingair?

Well, here's the deal. You started a thread in which you invited people to decide whether or not you were being unreasonable.

I have decided that you're being unreasonable. At this point, I will stick my tongue out, and remind you that you started it.

bracingair · 17/01/2008 21:13

the libray obviously cant provide everything to everyone as the differing needs would contradict each other.

By not regulating efficiently, then it wouldn't be appropiate for children, and would only be for adults. (and liberal parents and dcs)

By only allowing pg stuff then everone can come, but we cant do everything there.

OP posts:
Lauriefairycake · 17/01/2008 21:14

are you not a liberal parent ?
