No garden and worried about heat

Patchworkpuppy · 17/07/2022 10:13

Another hot weather post.

I don’t have a garden and in my area the heat is reaching 37 degrees.
I also have a 3 and half year old.

Any tips for us indoors would be greatly appreciated.

Close the windows and blinds/curtains as the air outside will be hotter then the air inside.

Camomila · 17/07/2022 10:26

I would go out early in the morning and then again late (eg 6pm) to the park for fresh air and then in the middle of the day just watch TV with the curtains drawn and maybe have a cool bath with some bath toys as an activity.

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 17/07/2022 10:28

Go to the park very early then stay inside with all the curtains closed. And windows. Don't open them until about 6pm. Check the temperature outside is lower than inside first.

Do some water play activity in the bath or shower. Get every plastic container and funnel etc. you own in there.

MuffinMcLayLikeABundleOfHay · 17/07/2022 10:29

Completely cross-posted with @Camomila there!

KarmaStar · 17/07/2022 10:31

Keep blinds, curtains,Windows shut all the time.Keep fans on.
Take little ones out early before it's too hot.
Can you have a small paddling pool laid out in some towels inside?have a ' picnic' by the sea so to speak.or let them play in bath or shower with then clothes on,supervised?not water bottles full of icy water and a film?💐

missdemeanors · 17/07/2022 10:31

I think many people with gardens will be staying out of them Monday and Tuesday. I certainly will. It'll be far easier to keep cool indoors. I'll probably have a sit in the garden really early (6 am ish) and then come inside.
I'm working from home anyway tomorrow which helps

Snowpaw · 17/07/2022 10:34

definitely get out of the house first thing in morning - could pack up a breakfast picnic and eat at the park / local fields or something. Big run around. At home set up some toys in the bathroom sink with bubbles in - put a step up to it and I find it keeps them entertained for hours! Eg washing toy cars. Go out again after tea.

Hi, I read online that if you take a frozen bottle of water (maybe an old Diet Coke 2l plastic bottle), put a damp flannel on top then place in front of a fan it’s a very effective way to cool your room. Sadly we have a tiny freezer so can’t try it myself but maybe a tip that could work. I’m worried about the heat tomorrow too… we do have an AC which we set up but its not super effective. Better than nothing i suppose

RockandRollsuicide · 17/07/2022 15:47

Op I've only been going to the garden at night.
And washing line in the day.

ScribblingPixie · 17/07/2022 15:51

Wear a damp T-shirt
Soak your feet in a bowl of cold water.
Run your wrists at the pulse point under a cold tap
Keep a wet flannel in a plastic bag in the freezer for forehead and neck mopping

I have discovered a desk fan in front of a chimney breast is excellent at making ‘air con’. Dropped the temperature of the house dramatically in around an hour and holding it. Currently 20 degrees indoors and over 30 outside.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 17/07/2022 16:30

Freeze a few of his plastic toys in water - he can splash around in a shallow bath helping them escape.

Thats a great idea.

Bubblebubblebah · 17/07/2022 16:47

Don't be sorry you don't have garden. I am just wishfully looking at my southfacing one which is currently just too uncomfortable to be in...

Loving the idea with frozen toys!

Helenloveslee4eva · 17/07/2022 16:48

Cinema trip ?

Grumpybutfunny · 17/07/2022 16:51

Any local splash parks? You could go to the beach and play in the sea if it's local

LabiaMinoraPissusFlapus · 17/07/2022 16:54

Surely you'd stay inside anyway in such high heat?

If your curtains are as thin as mine they may not do much to keep the temperature down. I've hung throws over the top of my curtains during the day the last couple of days and it seems to have slightly slowed down how fast it heats up in here. It's 28 degrees in my lounge at the moment and reached that about an hour or two ago, whereas on Friday it got to 30 degrees by about 1.30pm. I had the windows and curtains open overnight until about 9.30am to let in cooler air.

Beach or splash park is very much a bad idea when it's 35+ degrees. Good early morning, but after 10am you should be back inside.

PlanetNormal · 17/07/2022 17:35

Tonight, when the temperature drops, open all your windows & curtains and leave the upstairs ones wide open all night. This means your house will start the day as cool as possible. Then, before 10am close all the windows, blinds & curtains and leave them closed all day, just as people who live in hot countries keep their shutters closed during the heat of the day. This stops the sun turning your rooms into greenhouses and stops the hot air from outside getting inside. It’s the same principle as keeping your fridge door closed, or keeping your car windows closed when the aircon is on.

Eat very little but drink lots of cold non-caffeinated drinks.

Titsywoo · 17/07/2022 17:37

When I was pregnant we had a really hot summer and I was in a small flat. I sat with my feet in a washing up bowl of cold water with a fan on me and the curtains drawn and managed to keep fairly cool. Just watch TV inside from 12-6.

I was told by a GP to eat little and often as a lot of our hydration comes from food, so not big, heavy meals but salads etc. Obviously lots of water.

Do you have any cardboard boxes you could tear up? Cardboard is an excellent insulator and I always tape cardboard over the inside of the south facing window of my bedroom a hot day. It makes a huge difference.
