To ask of those of your 'cursed' with chin hairs, do they behave like this?!

I've had chin hairs since my mid 20s. I have had tests, hormone checks etc, no known cause. I am getting laser now (I'm 40) and it is helping but not massively yet-up until I decided to do this I just plucked.

Anyway, I have found in the last few years that if I squeeze around the base of some of the hairs, they just 'pop out'. Similar to if one squeezes a blackhead. It is as if they're not 'anchored' or have a proper follicle, I can squish them out and they look like tiny little strands of dark hair.

Not all of them do this, some of them are definitely 'proper' hairs. But some of them do.
Am I alone?

Mine is a black, thick, firm, poker straight splinter rather than hair. It’s very odd.

AFineBalance · 16/07/2022 21:56

Hmm don’t have the popping but do have the mystery speed stealth growth. I’ve spent too much of my life trying to figure out if it’s do something with (peri) cycle timing. and stocking every necessary place (bathroom/bedroom/every effing handbag) with emergency tweezers.

Echobelly · 16/07/2022 21:57

I've started getting the buggers in my 40s, generally I have to tweezer them, haven't tried 'popping'.

purpleme12 · 16/07/2022 22:08

No I've not been able to pop mine out.
The other day I actually took 9 bloody hairs out! Couldn't believe it! Some more noticeable than others of course.
Why does this happen
😭

denbigh · 16/07/2022 22:57

Yea my cunting ones do..look like stubble then squeeze out..however.. this inflamed the surrounding skin so I was advised not to when I went for electrolysis.. as toughened the skin up..I now have 2 unsightly dark patches where I used to do this. Salicylic acid on the area can help apparently.. I'm on week 3 of at home laser treatment and the little fuckers are growing at rate of knots, not allowed to pluck while laser therapy so its pissing me off... I HATE them

Dontsayyouloveme · 16/07/2022 23:07

It’s from the laser treatment 🤷🏻‍♀️

I should have added that I've had this situation long before I began getting laser. It's so odd.

I've never had laser and I get them!

Spookysparkles · 16/07/2022 23:57

Yep I get exactly the same- sometimes I can squeeze them out but the majority need plucking. I love it though - so satisfying pulling them all out 😂

RiderOfTheBlue · 17/07/2022 00:04

I've been able to squeeze some out. I think if you get them at the right stage they'll squeeze out. Like before the root has formed properly. As others have said, they look like a little black dot under the skin and don't take much squeezing.

BogRollBOGOF · 17/07/2022 00:12

QueSyrahSyrah · 16/07/2022 21:35

No they don't pop out, but I'm convinced they grow at amazing speed. I can have a good look at my chin at 8am at home, be confident I'm hair-free, and then go to the loo at work at 11am and BOOM an inch long black wiry hair has appeared Confused

I have a very fine, colourless one on my decolletage. I'll suddenly snag it then play hide and seek trying to find it for extraction.

I have a solitary, stubbly white one that pops under my chin too.

Early 40s now but they've been teasing me for years.

ChinBristles · 17/07/2022 00:16

Hmm. See my username. I have a few chin hairs but I can't recall this happening with them. My legs tho - defo! It looks like a black dot and then I squeeze out a hair - it's often encapsulated in a transparent case. I think maybe it's been supposed to fall out but has got trapped in the pore and the body has thought it is a foreign body so make a protective seal round it to keep it out.

BTW Vaniqua cream really helped with my chin hairs. 90% reduction.

Grimoven · 17/07/2022 00:17

Please don't pluck or laser. Electrolysis is the only method of permanently removing the blighters.
Plucking increases blood flow to the folical ditto laser alarm IPL.

HelloHeathcliffeItsMe · 17/07/2022 00:27

Plucked so much the follicle is damaged? No idea how hair works. I am, however, perversely excited to try squeezing mine out.

Do yours seem to go straight from nothing to 1 inch long? I check very frequently then all of a sudden there is one striving to reach the length of Gandalfs beard.

pumpkinpie01 · 17/07/2022 00:56

Yep I get this too , my sister told me years ago when she did a beauty course that when you squeeze them you are getting them before they get the chance to turn into a hair , don't know how true that it thou ! I also get v strong white ones and when I pull them out the hair is black under the skin , weird .

starfishmummy · 17/07/2022 01:05

Mine don't do that.

What they do is go from not there when I check the mirror to being about 3 inches long by the time I have walked out the front door five minutes later!

DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 17/07/2022 01:11

Yes. Mine extend beyond the chin area and are most prominent (to me) between the space under my chin before it reaches my neck. Not sure what the proper name for it is, but yes, the hairs I can't pluck as they're too short, I squeeze and they usually come out like very short hairs. Sometimes like a black dot.

Mate, if I didn't pluck mine I'd have a full on beard. Can't do electrolysis.

Bit of a condescending post....

Rainbowshit · 17/07/2022 01:42

Pollydonia · 16/07/2022 21:29

Yes, I've had those too!
I hate the ones that poke through the skin enough so that you can feel them with fingertips but not enough that you can grab them with tweezers 😠

Ugh those are the worst!!

RobertSmithsLipstick · 17/07/2022 01:49

I'm a raging popaholic.
Look up a video on sebaceous filaments, because that's what these sound like by your description.

They're not gruesome vids, because the filaments aren't really pimples.

Hmm, I'd love to believe this, but having spent a good chunk of my childhood watching my lovely Mum have electrolysis, I can confirm that it does exactly fuck all permanently - her chin is similar to mine still, except her hairs are grey and a bit finer now and mine are still chunky and dark 😂

If there really was a magic bullet we'd all have done it wouldn't we?

But I'm glad it's not just me who checks the mirror, knows there is nothing there then gets to where I'm going and BOOM there is an inch-long fucker - where do they come from? Why doesn't the hair on my head grow that fast?!

OP I do get those but on my legs mostly, I think they're little ingrown hairs or something.

Pumpkinsandrainbows · 17/07/2022 02:03

@ChinBristles does the cream help with lighter coloured fine hairs, more like long very fuzzy peach hair or just with darker ones? I've got both

BashfulClam · 17/07/2022 02:04

Yep little black dots I cam squeeze quite often. I just felt one now whereas there were non yesterday. Magnifying mirror and tweezers tomorrow.

I read before that they are curled under your skin. When they break through enough for you to feel them, they have uncoiled so it appears as if they have grown at a ridiculous speed. I don’t know if that is true but it makes sense to me.

Greenday49 · 17/07/2022 06:18

WonderingWanda · 16/07/2022 21:32

No mine don't do that but I have one random long very fine wiggly hair that grows on my neck but only sometimes. I check for it regularly and it's not there then one day bang it's about and inch and half long. It's a mystery!

I have him too.
And another one that sticks out at a random angle that means I can only see it by doing a weird pose in the mirror-I often forget about it, and then suddenly realise I have had a hugely long hair on my neck for weeks and wonder who's noticed!
