AIBU to ask how much is fuel costing you per week?

AIBU to ask how much is fuel costing you per week? Was just thinking about how expensive fuel is now and how it's only going to work.

So how much is it costing everyone per week?

OP posts:
GCHeretic · 16/07/2022 10:52

No idea per week. My husband’s main car now costs him £180 to fill, and his fun car is not much less, but we don’t drive much.

That £180 gets us 400 motorway miles.

PuffinMcStuffin · 16/07/2022 10:53

DH's commute is about £200 a week, and mine is £80. We don't have public transport here so have to drive. Our salaries do not leave much room for fuel getting any more expensive.

PuttingDownRoots · 16/07/2022 10:55

£100 per tank.

Thats one round trip to work and back for DH, plus the small amount he does at work, cycles when possible. (He weekly commutes!)

My car is just "local" driving g like supermarkets and kids activities, about 25miles a week normally.

SavoirFlair · 16/07/2022 10:56

My car cost me just under £196 to fill up from nearly empty with E10 (regular) petrol - but it does have a 104.5 litre tank…

surely tank size, and usage (driving urban will use more fuel over time) matter here in terms of petrol cost per week

How would tank size have an effect on cost per week?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/07/2022 11:01

i never put more than £25 in, due to concern about how long my car will actually last!
but i put £25 in yesterday and cannot believe that i only had been £24 in on monday.
so that is not good

SweatyChamoisPad · 16/07/2022 11:09

Mine’s about £90 a tank. I don’t have kids so don’t need to do things like school runs, so I’ve set myself a target - one tank a month only. No more driving locally, cycling to work is the default, and doing multi trips - so today is RHS garden, then Hobbycraft, then allotment, rather than three separate trips.

If I’m heading up to the Lakes to walk then I’ll put more in but that will come out of my Monzo “holiday” pot.

How would tank size have an effect on cost per week?

Because it’s likely to relate to engine size and fuel guzzling propensity.

I am stupid enough to drive a car with a 5.0 litre supercharged engine. So it has a 104.5 litre tank.

if I drove my neighbour’s awesome Mazda 2, I’m going to guess it has a tank size that’s a third of mine, and twice (at least) as good fuel consumption

so presuming we travel similar distances and similar usages (urban or motorway) then I’m guaranteed to spend more per week as I’m filling a larger tank

cheninblanc · 16/07/2022 11:22

75 to fill up and I do that 3 times a month

JudyGemstone · 16/07/2022 11:22

My tank costs about £75 to fill up and I do it once a week for the regular commute, more of going away at the weekends etc.

so around £300 a month minimum which is fucking loads

nokidshere · 16/07/2022 11:26

I put 15 quid a fortnight in mine which gives me about 90 miles now. I don't often drive more than that now we are retired though.

MyNameIsAngelicaSchuyler · 16/07/2022 11:27

Neither of us drive in the week, we walk / cycle everywhere.

I need to get to this place! Chapeau to you. It’s the best way, I just haven’t yet figured out the school /clients timetable thing . It will happen!

14Degrees · 16/07/2022 11:31

I drive about 40 miles a day on my commute. And about 30 miles total at the weekend. Tiny car usually very economical. A tank lasts 6 days and last time hit just over £50.00. So £250 ish a month. When I first moved to this job and was calculating fuel costs I estimated it would be around £140 a month.

coffeecupsandfairylights · 16/07/2022 11:32

About £30 a week on average. I fill up maybe every 10-12 days and that costs between £50-55.

RagzRebooted · 16/07/2022 11:36

Around £50 a week. My car is currently costing 23p a mile and I do around 200 miles a week between driving to work (30 miles a time round trip, 4 days) plus driving DCs around as we're rural.

bluesky45 · 16/07/2022 11:47

I put £30 a week of diesel in our car. I drive 20mins to nursery and the same back approx 10 times a week. DH drives approx 15mins to his hobby and the same back twice a week. We do a few other trips such as supermarket, kids activities etc all fairly local. DH has a van for work with the fuel for that paid for by his employer. From next week it will be more unpredictable as summer holidays means we will be doing different trips. And then once school starts in September, we will hardly use the car at all because we will be walking to school. Can't wait! Will be a lovely saving for us as we go into autumn and start spending more of gas and electric for the house, so probably not actually any better off!

Pkwio · 16/07/2022 11:59

Not a lot. Still WFH. But even covid aside I usually do less than 3,000 miles a year. My 9 year old car has less than 40,000 miles on the clock.

£50 a month ish.

fudfootedfannybangle · 16/07/2022 12:03

if I have to go to the office 5x week then it’ll be £500. It won’t be financially viable for me to go in.

fudfootedfannybangle · 16/07/2022 12:04

Sorry, £125/week.

Trumpetpants · 16/07/2022 12:08

Between £70 and £80 a week :( drive to work and am a Carer for family member

Sunshineandrainbow · 16/07/2022 12:09

65 a week 20 more than this time last year.

iwantavuvezela · 16/07/2022 12:12

buying a hybrid car (old car gave up and was also under sever restrictions with financial penalties to been driven in London - so upgraded) This has reduced my overall fuel bill - I put £60 in to fill the tank and that lasts 500 miles - which for me is 4-5 weeks of fuel.

Ariela · 16/07/2022 12:12

@GCHeretic How would tank size have an effect on cost per week?

In that most weeks I do not need to fill up. Probably every 4-6 weeks.
However, as in a recent case, our company fuel card was due to go up 11p/litre+VAT so I filled up before it went up. I've not filled up since then.

(It's interesting to note that our fuel card diesel price has dropped every week since peaking about 4 weeks ago at 193.6, and drops to 182.15 incl VAT on Monday. Meanwhile the pumps I fill at remain resolutely at 197.9p/l throughout)

chiffchaffchiff · 16/07/2022 12:22

£65 every 2- 3 weeks. I have a small 1 litre engine and usually only drive 75 miles per week (3 days in the office). Outside of work we use DH's bigger car which is electric. I've noticed I'm filling up more often since the switch to E10 which is annoying.
