To not understand why Penny Mordaunt is so popular?

She seems to have loads of support. Does anyone know why? It seems like she’s come out of nowhere.

Much though I detest Laboour's fence-sitting on women's sex-based rights, I don't understand how anyone could vote Tory over this. It demeans the issue if you treat it as a reason to support those cruel, cynical, toxic, nasty people.

The Tories have no policies or principles beyond being in power and enriching themselves. They'll go whichever way the wind is blowing if it wins them an election.

SvartePetter · 15/07/2022 14:54

Me: Penny Mordaunt gives me the impression that she is the kind of woman who is not a friend of other women.
My very conservative boss, with stars in his eyes: Yes! She's like Thatcher!

ThackeryBinks · 15/07/2022 15:15

I think the party apparatchik's think she's unintelligent but photogenic and fond of the lime light. It makes her easy to manipulate which is great for all those back seat drivers. Worryingly if she wins and brings her cats to Downing Street will they get on with Larry?

And that, in a nutshell, is the answer. Rishi is just a snake who has been plotting for the top job. He got parachuted into one of the safest seats and then became 2nd most important minister without any previous serious ministerial positions. There's something going on behind the scenes to propel him into power, and "ordinary" backbenchers and party members don't want any part of it. Not to mention his screw ups with the economy, covid support (or lack of it for 3 million people), rampant inflation, tax rise/falls flip flopping - he's not shown any economic competence in the few years he's had any power.

Who is behind him and what is the appeal of Rishi to them?

The unravelling fibs she's told about her naval career are quite amusing.

Reminds me of the good old days of fantasist Paul Nuttall former UKIP leader.

Apparently Mordaunt is an excellent communicator- she comes across as a good listener one on one, and makes people feel understood and valued when she meets them, and that’s why she’s so popular with grassroots Tories.
I don’t like her and I’m not a Tory, but I find the assumption that she’s only popular because she reminds Tory men of Thatcher but fuckable pretty offensive in the implication that that’s the only reason people on the right would support a female candidate.

Spot on. I've met her through work and she was friendly, approachable and gave her full attention. I liked her on a personal level but I don't agree with her politics.

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/07/2022 23:02

She wasn’t a great communicator at the debate tonight. I don’t like what I’ve seen of her so was worried she’d do well but even her most ardent supporters will struggle to spin it.

Rinatinabina · 15/07/2022 23:09

Fuck knows, she’s lied about something which is easily verifiable, no-one who’s worked with her recently is supporting her, mainly they are saying she basically used to disappear and not do her job (thats in her current role and in previous ones too). The leader of a council she worked for said she was sacked for incompetence.

Don’t know why MP’s are so keen to swap one liar for another one.

This was pretty funny. Doesn’t seem like she’s the brightest.

ChitChatChatter · 16/07/2022 01:52

I dislike the way she's already lying to gloss over inconvenient truths, such as the statements she's previously made on the trans issue as well as doubts about the veracity of some of the statements made about her naval service and doubts about her effectiveness when in post in government. Whatever her views are, she needs either to own them or say that she has changed her mind, not lie about her previous actions. Especially when everything is on the record and can be easily verified, it's not very smart. I also didn't like the crude 'willy' so-called joke she made the other day which was totally inappropriate. Is this really who we want to represent us both at home and abroad?

She didn't have any in-depth answers to questions on policy in last night's debate, I lost count of the number of times she said 'oh, there's loads of ways we can tackle [insert issue]' without providing any details, even in outline. She also seemed not to understand that VAT is a form of tax. The more I see of her, the more she's starting to look like a female version of Boris: not fully across the brief and therefore prone to giving waffling answers, lying or glossing over inconvenient truths as a defensive action when challenged, very charming. And anyone remember Boris flying across the Thames on a zip wire? Diving off a diving board anyone? Has the Tory party learnt nothing? There also seems to be a view that she would give Keir Starmer a run for his money at PMQs - I wouldn't bet on it, I really wouldn't.

In my experience bullshitters are often superficially quite likeable.

Boris Johnson says hello

LoobyDop · 16/07/2022 08:25

She does seem to be a bit of a female Boris. Shame for the rest of us that we get the politicians the Tories deserve. I wish the sane Conservatives who were driven out by Johnson in 2019 had been brave enough to stick around and start their own party, but I suppose they thought there was no point after Change UK failed so dismally.

Omg. The Tories are truly incompetent

Oestrogelsmuggler · 16/07/2022 09:08

It has come to a pretty pass when I find myself hoping the Tory party just chooses the billionaire because he seems least weird.

True. But you didn't quote the bit where I said I didn't like her politics. I was agreeing with another poster that face to face she comes across as likeable and approachable. Do I want her as PM? Hell no. Don't trust her and don't like her voting history. But I can see why members of the public may find her superficially charismatic.

ThinWomansBrain · 16/07/2022 13:45

Penny Morduant on that other hand has quite widely known to be a bit slow and dim by those who have worked with her.

Know very little of her - does she sound even more dim than Truss?

MrsMiggins9100 · 16/07/2022 17:45

In the TV debate last night, she sought to clarify her view on women etc. But she was highly duplicitous. She kept saying she was a biological women, leaving the door open to acknowledge transwomen as women, albeit other women. When in power she could then say ALL women, including biological and trans. Women do not need biological in front of their own word. It is nonsense. She is dangerous and too swayed by her brother and his fiancé David Paisesly the trans activist who sues women for saying women are women. She is very keen on self-ID, meaning any man, under new planned laws, can say he is a women and get a £5.00 certificate will be allowed into our spaces. No thanks!!

Yes. Compared to the others he really does!

EX fiance. To clarify, her brother is gay but not trans. He's lovely and kind in real life but I disagree with his views on trans ideology. And Im utterly against self ID. I fully agree with your concerns MrsM.
